Princeton philosophy professor Kwame Anthony Appiah delivered his lecture "A Life of Honor" at McClung Museum Wednesday afternoon to more than a hundred guests?that included faculty, staff and students.?
Hosted by the Department of Philosophy, Appiah's lecture explored?the nature of human "honor," its relationship to our natural sense of shame and respect and how it may prove to be a powerful tool for moral revolution in the global community.
"Honor," Appiah said at the lecture, "is not a part of morality. It's a separate thing. In fact, it often gets people to go against their morality."

He explained further that the aim of his work, in short, was to prove that honor could in fact be aligned with morality to create both moral and honorable people, but we must actively pursue that goal with reason and an understanding of honor itself.
The event was held in honor of the formal opening of the University of Tennessee Humanities Center, a new center for the College of Arts and Sciences that aims to facilitate and improve research opportunities in humanities disciplines.
Appiah was an ideal fit for this event in honor of the new Humanities Center, because he himself has had a very prolific career that embraced multi-disciplinary research projects from philosophy to sociology to history and beyond.
His most recent book, called? The Honor Code?contained the philosophical and sociological framework which he attempted to explore more briefly as the basis for his lecture. He also drew upon his own life story, discussing his African father and British mother who moved him to Ghana as a child, his immense education from Cambridge as well as his teaching experience at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Duke and now Princeton University.
Among countless other published works, Appiah has published four full length scholarly books, all of which he discussed at some length Wednesday with his listening audience.?Attendees were also given the opportunity to ask questions about his life and works at the end of his lecture. Many stayed afterward for the reception and a chance to speak with him more.
