News and Society Blog-Economics: Freedom Without Responsibility ...

It was somewhere back in 69' or 70 when I heard the late Paul Harvey give a very motivational talk on that very topic. . We are living the fruits of his prediction right now, today, in 2012. America is in trouble and as citizens, many are no longer acting responsibly.
Let's take a brief look at the signs of the irresponsible times in which we live. Here is my Top 12 signs of the times. All the figures are in billions of dollars.

1. Social Security Fraud: At the present time dishonest individuals and groups are costing our government over $11,000,000,000 every year.

2. Teen Pregnancy: Our irresponsible parents and teenagers cost our society over $11,000,000,000 per year in costs.

3. Unemployment Fraud: Dishonest workers who file fraudulent claims for unemployment cost our society and government $17,000,000,000 every year in America.

4. Drug Related Crimes: Citizens of our country strung out on drugs, unable or unwilling to control themselves cost our society $37,000,000,000 every year.

5. Alcohol Related Crimes: Citizens who are unable or unwilling to control their drinking cost society another $83,000,000,000 a year.

6. Medicare Fraud: Unprincipled citizens who are privileged to use our Medicare system and steal from it cost society $90,000,000,000 every single year.

7. Drug Abuse Cost: Citizens in our great nation abusing drugs without regard to anyone else are costing our society $98,000,000,000 each and every year.

8. Drunk Driving Cost: Citizens unable to control their drinking and choose to drive putting all of us at risk, many times over and over, cost our society $132,000,000,000 dollars every year.

9. Tobacco Costs: In spite of all the evidence that smoking causes cancer and ends your life, we have citizens who continue to make the choice to smoke. That choice costs our society $193,000,000,000 each and every year.

10. Welfare Fraud: In a country with possibly the best social welfare system in the world, at least we spend like it is, we have citizens who dishonestly choose to cheat the program and cost our society $310,000,000,000 each and every year.

11. Tax Evasion: In a country with the best services, infrastructure, military, lifestyle and freedoms - there are those who choose to not want to pay their fair share. The cost of tax evasion in this country is now $450,000,000,000 every year. That number is growing.

For my twelfth and final example, we have to go to Congress and our Presidents, past and present. Their irresponsibility is legend, but in this case it is obvious.

12. Illegal Immigration: No President or Congress in recent years has been willing to solve this problem. Their irresponsibility is currently costing our government $113,000,000,000 each and every year and it is growing.

Freedom, without responsibility, will not work. When your freedom to smoke extends past my freedom to not pay for your smoking, your behavior is irresponsible. We live in a society that was founded based on moral and religious principles. Those principles are no longer as evident in our society as they once were.

Since the 1960's the fabric of our society has been under attack. There are many who praise the demise of the nuclear family unit. There are many who believe that our schools are the center of teaching our moral values. God has been chased from our schools and He is being threatened in our churches. It's time to ask that famous question of Dr. Phil's, 'how's that working for ya?'

At a time when our country is being shaken to its very core over financial problems. When our national debt has risen from $10,000,000,000,000 (that's Trillion by the way) to a mere $15,000,000,000,000 in just three short years - we could use some money!

The total costs of problems that can be solved by individual choice is a staggering $1,545,000,000,000. That is 10% of the total national debt based on our own irresponsibility. That is sad in the greatest nation on earth. We need to reverse this trend by taking and teaching responsibility and moral values. There is no other way.

America has had it so good for so long, we as a nation, collectively have short memories about our history, where we came from and what exactly got us here. We were founded as a Christian nation, based on Christian values and two parent families. Our very fiber is being attacked today and if we do not win this battle - we are choosing to go down the path we are now heading. A path that leads to moral and financial bankruptcy and change we can count on. Not change we like - unknown change and a new world order.

Freedom, without responsibility, will not work. We have the freedom of choice. It is time we take responsibility for the freedom so many have died to provide for us. The time is now. The choice is yours. Remember our forefathers and choose wisely lest we soon follow the Romans.
