Tunisian presidency extends state of emergency

Tunisia's presidency said on Friday it has extended the country's state of emergency by one month until September 30, the seventh such extension since it first came into force on January 14, 2011.

The state of emergency has been in place since a mass uprising that prompted veteran strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to flee the country.

Imed Daimi, spokesman for the presidency, told Shems FM radio that the decision for another extension had been taken "to coincide with the school year and the end of the tourist season."

He also said that "the security situation in the country has improved in recent times."

The state of emergency gives police special powers of intervention, and the army too has also been deployed in several areas, although its presence is low-key.

This summer was marked by several demonstrations in Tunisia, including in the town of Sidi Bouzid, the birthplace of the revolution.

Protests were often dispersed ruthlessly by the police who used tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators.

Google+ now has birthday reminders, too

13 hrs.

Many find Facebook's birthday reminders silly. Either they're overlooked entirely or lead to a post attack that clutters up someone's Wall (or Timeline). The folks behind Google+, on the other hand,?might've just?figured out how to make birthday reminders better (or?less annoying, at least).

Irene Chung, one of Google's software engineers, had the honor of introducing the social network's new birthday reminder?feature in a Google+ post.

"You?ll see a reminder on Google.com when someone in your [Google+] circles has a birthday," she explains.?This reminder ??an example of which you can see above ??is tough to miss since it lives in the same corner as regular Google+ notifications. It will only be visible to people with whom you've chosen to share your birthday, of course. (You can adjust this setting at https://plus.google.com/up/birthday, writes Chung.)

Unlike Facebook, Google+ doesn't offer a way for people to post something?onto your?page. This means that there won't be any silly messages from people you haven't spoken to since they wished you a happy birthday last year appearing among your own posts. Instead you might see a a couple of?emails or some Google+ posts in which you're tagged.

Now if only you could convince all of your friends to actually use Google+ so that you can properly take advantage of this new feature, you'd be all set.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

3 Secrets To Effective Utah Property Management | South Jersey ...

We worked in conjunction with industry experts and professionals to help put this list together of the Three cruical, little-known secrets that?ll help you succeed in property management in Utah. They are easy, but they?ll definitely decide your failure or success in property management.

Utah Property Management Secret 1

In Utah property management, exposure is key. This may be obvious to those just beginning in property management or for those that have been involved for years, but the reality is, most Utah property management companies fail to market their name on rental properties. We found many property managers in Utah don?t even put a simple sign on the property. The concept is, tenants like dealing with a person rather than a property management firm. This is a common mistake that keeps many managers from receiving extra leads from people or managers looking to move to Utah.

Utah Property Management Secret 2

Get your policies and procedures in position before renting properties. The most frequent mistakes that happen in Utah property management occur when you run into a situation that you do not have a policy for. Unexpectedly, you are cutting your costs, making changes to your contract or making promises that you have no way of keeping. Do yourself a favor, and make these important decisions before you end up managing 50 different rental houses in Utah, with 50 different property owners who do not live in Utah, with a different set of expectations for each one. Property management is as much about consistency and reliability as it is about getting your name out there.

Utah Property Management Secret 3

We?ve saved the most significant secret to Utah property management for last: surround yourself with a team that you can count on. Period. This is not the least expensive secret to put into action, but it definitely pays off massively when it counts. As a Utah property manager, you?ll be handling clients that may get a water leak, have a fire, lose a job, or something else horrible, and it seems this always happens on Christmas Eve or Easter morning. If you?d like to be a property manager in Utah for an extended period of time, and have a family or any type of social life, then you need to surround yourself with trustworthy sub contractors and office support so that you can go on the occasional vacation or have some other person fix the water leak for a client at 3 in the morning.

Additionally, many Utah property management companies make the mistake of thinking the property owner would rather save a few bucks by having the property management company do the work or repairs. Typically, property owners wish to know that a professional is taking care of the problem and that it?s going to be fixed properly. Don?t be scared to turn to contractors. Stick to what you do best. You don?t want to become a jack of all trades and master of none.

Utah property management is a good business and industry. Use these secrets to help make sure your new venture starts off on the right foot. Or if you?re a current property management company in Utah, improve your business today, save your sanity, your family, and your social life.

These secrets are just the tip of the iceberg to successful Utah property management. To get additional tips and tricks on how to better manage your properties and clients visit our website.

Verdict due on Mumbai gunman's appeal

India's Supreme Court was due Wednesday to deliver its verdict on an appeal against the death sentence handed down to the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Mohammed Kasab, one of 10 gunmen who laid siege to Mumbai in attacks that lasted nearly three days and killed 166 people, launched his appeal claiming he had not been given a fair trial.

He was found guilty of charges including waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts, and was given the death penalty in May 2010.

Two Supreme Court judges in New Delhi have heard the appeal of Pakistan-born Kasab, who is currently held in a maximum-security prison in Mumbai.

If he loses his Supreme Court petition, he can lodge a final appeal for clemency with the president.

During the November 2008 attacks, heavily armed Islamist gunmen stormed targets in Mumbai including luxury hotels, a Jewish centre, a hospital and a bustling train station.

India blames the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit for training, equipping and financing the gunmen with support from "elements" in the Pakistan military.

Kasab initially pleaded not guilty but later confessed, admitting he was one of the gunmen sent by the LeT.

"I was denied a fair trial," Kasab said in a statement when his appeal hearing began in January. "I may be guilty of killing people and carrying out a terrorist act but I am not guilty of waging war against the state."

In 2009, Pakistan charged seven alleged perpetrators behind the attacks but insists it needs more evidence.

The Mumbai attacks horrified India as each development unfolded live on television, and there have been widespread public calls for Kasab's execution.

At the trial, the prosecution produced fingerprint, DNA, eyewitness and TV footage evidence showing Kasab opening fire and throwing grenades at Mumbai's main railway station in the bloodiest episode of the attacks.

Most death sentences in India are commuted to life imprisonment, but convicts can sit on death row for years awaiting a final decision.

Pakistan has admitted that the attacks were planned partly on its soil, but flatly denies any official involvement.

Importance Of A Business Security System ? Scope Articles

Georgia business security system is important to owners of companies for the protection of their assets and properties. There are a lot at stake when you have a company. As an owner, it is your obligation to install protective devices within the premises of your building.

The company is composed of things of value. When robbers get their hands on these things, they will definitely remove them from the premises and sell them to anyone interested or keep them as if they were own. This is where Georgia security systems come handy.

Anything can happen within the time you are operating the company. Robbers and thieves are just some of the bad elements in society that can ruin the reputation of your company. They can ruin the trust of customers in you.

Your customers thought that they can trust you when it comes to protecting their properties. You can live with the expectation by a having a good mechanism of protection in place. Some of the devices that you can install are alarms, video surveillance cameras.

Your customers may have assets or interest in the position of your company. Now, if you do not have a rigid protection system against force entry of unauthorized people and cyber theft, customers will not transact their business in your company. It is important therefore to install a protective mechanism to ensure all assets and properties of the company are intact.

They are made with the anticipation of a hacker?s mind. These devices have been fully tested against any type of breach that you can think of. If ever an unauthorized person gets in, he must be really that good and he is probably not working alone. It is possible he got an insider to help him out. It would take a real effort to break into the mechanism of the device and it would also take a long time.

It would cost more for company owners when property is damaged than it is for them to install this device. The company could lose when the privacy of their company was invaded. That is why do not scrimp on yourself when it comes to installing one in your office.

You can even install one for your home. A home security Georgia is different from the Georgia business security system being used in company premises. The mechanism is different in the sense that they are fitted for home use. Prices of these devices also vary from each other depending upon the features of the unit. Advanced features are pricier.

LiftPort Wants To Build Space Elevator On the Moon By 2020

He-3 is preferable for a fusion fuel since it's aneutronic--no radiation to deal. It comes that way from the moon, the path to producing it on earth does everything but avoid radiation.

Even the "aneutronic" fusion reactions have side-reactions that produce neutrons [wikipedia.org]. While a lower neutron flux helps with materials engineering from a longevity standpoint, it still makes the reactor wall materials radioactive. That's the real problem, and He-3 doesn't fix it.

He-3 is useful as an advanced fuel in rocket propulsion

a) Requires technology that is currently at the wishful-thinking stage of development.
b) Rockets don't require aneutronic fusion, because fusion engines would be most useful in deep space, where radiation is not a problem.
c) He-3 fusion isn't entirely aneutronic anyway.
d) He-3 fusion is harder than D-T fusion.

Power can be produced in space and beamed down to earth

Has nothing to do with the Moon, or an orbital tether.

There is no realistic source of power that either exists only on the Moon, or would be cheaper to produce on the Moon.

Many of those rocks we have down here on Earth resulted from really big rocks from space slamming into us. Might be good idea if we have technology, infrastructure and humanity already in space before we're in need of it.

A tether on the Moon won't help you solve this problem. If this comes up, robotic space-probe technology will be all we need, and we have that already. Stop watching Hollywood sci-fi where brave men have to go deal with the problem in a giant space ship. The real solution will likely be as simple as coating one side of the incoming object with soot.

Putting multi-trillions of dollars into the vacuum is preferable to craters into the middle-eastern sand. The same jobs are created but at the end of the day at you have something far more impressive to show for it and far fewer lives expended.

[citation needed]

Things aren't that simple in the real world. As cold and sad as it is, the lives of brown people in a distant desert just aren't worth much to anybody in the United States, unlike the oil they live on top of. By some calculation it was worth it to invade. Thanks to various mistakes, the cost ended up spiralling out of control, but even so the wars are probably a better investment than going to the Moon.

He-3 is worthless, because it doesn't achieve aneutronic fusion, just slightly-less-neutronic fusion. So then, what's left on the Moon that's worth a multi-trillion investment?

Seriously, name one thing that's on the moon that you think is worth trillions of dollars, keeping in mind that its surface is entirely covered in rocks.

Amber drops yield ancient mites

Some of the earliest fossils of pre-historic arthropods - dating to about 230 million years ago - have been discovered entombed in amber, PNAS journal reports.

Arthropods - a highly diverse family of invertebrates, which includes insects, arachnids and crustacea - constitute more than 90% of the entire species within the animal kingdom.

The previous earliest records of arthropod-containing amber dated back to the Cretaceous period, around 135 million years ago.

The researchers hope that the recent find - of two plant-feeding mites and one insect - will provide important insight into the early evolution of this highly diverse family of animals.

Amber is fossilised plant resin. The resin often entraps plant and animal material which then become buried - as "inclusions" - when the fossil amber forms.

A key feature of amber is its ability to preserve key features - such as the soft body parts - of the inclusions. It has become an important aid to understanding the early evolution of life.

As Prof David Grimaldi from the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and lead author of the study, explained: "Amber is an extremely valuable tool for palaeontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years."

The previous earliest arthropod-containing specimens of amber formed during the Cretaceous period - 145 to 65 million years ago (Ma).

Dr David Penney - an expert fossil researcher from the University of Manchester - told BBC News: "Many new Cretaceous amber outcrops rich in arthropods have been found over the last decade and these have increased our knowledge [of these important creatures]."

Experts have now turned their attention to amber from even earlier periods of the Earth's geological past.

What mite have been

According to Dr Penney: "A couple of tantalising possibilities have presented themselves in recent years including several new Jurassic outcrops in Lebanon. But as yet, no inclusions have been found."

In the current study, Prof Grimaldi and his team analysed amber deposits recovered from outcrops near to the village of Cortina in the Dolomite Alps of north eastern Italy.

These measured just a few millimetres across and were formed in the late Carnian stage of the Triassic period, around 230 Ma.

The deposits were excavated by Prof Eugenio Ragazzi and Prof Guido Roghi of the University of Padova, who had previously described the presence of microorganisms in Triassic amber formations.

As Dr Penney explained, "There has been excitement around finding pre-Cretaceous ambers with arthropod inclusions for some time".

After a painstaking screen of more than 70,000 droplets, Prof Grimaldi and his team discovered three ancient arthropods - including two species of previously undiscovered mite - entombed within these small resinous gems.

The new mite species are the oldest fossils of an extremely specialised group called Eriophyoidea. This contains about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called "galls".

The ancient mites most likely fed on the leaves of an extinct conifer tree that ultimately preserved them.

Commenting on the evolutionary adaptability of the mites Prof Grimaldi said: "We now know that gall mites are very adaptable.

"When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts."

Despite this adaptability the appearance of the mites has changed very little over the years.

As Prof Grimaldi observed: "You would think that by going back to the Triassic you'd find a transitional form of gall mite, but no.

"Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there - a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws, and mouthparts."

Dr Penney was surprised by the find: "The results presented here skip the Jurassic entirely and go back a step further to the Triassic. This was not expected."

On possible future discoveries and their importance he added, "It is a shame that future finds are expected to be in such a small size class due to the limitations of the amber recovery.

"Nonetheless, as the authors point out, future discoveries have great potential for understanding the early evolution of some groups as the Triassic Period follows a major extinction event."

Why You Need an Email Address Using Your Own Domain Name ...

Business owners benefit greatly by using an email address that contains the name of their business. Right away, you are seen as professional. If a business owner is not serious enough to register their own domain name and set up their own email address, how serious are they about their business? A personalised email address is also an easy way for existing clients and potential customers to remember the electronic mail address without having to look through their diaries and digital organisers. Today, it is possible to customise an online mail address as long as it follows the right format. Domain names can be included for fast recall and to achieve a more professional business email address. By choosing an appropriate domain name you can make your electronic mail address look more professional and make it easier to remember. For businesses, utilising your own domain name is strongly recommended rather than using a free email service. Besides looking unprofessional, another disadvantage of using a free email service is you risk getting spam messages in your inbox and you risk your email address being used by fraudulent people to send spam emails. Creating a unique email address containing your domain name can be done in two ways. First, set up dedicated hosting for your specific domain name. What this means is hosting the domain name on a particular server. Doing this will allow you to have your own portion of the disk space for each mail account. Another option is to set up email forwarding using your domain name. Use this option if you want to continue using your existing email account. With email forwarding, messages you receive from your hosted email account will be automatically sent to your current account. Web hosting companies normally offer packages that allow customers to create one or several email addresses using their domain name. You can do this on your own using the online control panel provided by your hosting company. The direct URL of the control panel should be provided to you by the company but if this is not possible, ask your web hosting company for help with setting up your email addresses. To create your specific email address via your web hosting company, you will need to enter a username, password and amount of space you want for your email account. Remember, though, that the space you specify here already forms part of the total disk space allocated to you in your hosting package. Hosting companies can allow multiple or even unlimited email accounts these days but if you?re in business, it would be beneficial to limit it to just two or three that you can use on a regular basis. For security reasons, it?s crucial not to share your password with anybody unless you have a trusted assistant who manages your emails and performs other administrative tasks on your behalf. You need to protect your inbox and even your website from various internet threats and attacks. By utilising a hosted domain name, you also have the freedom to change internet service providers (ISPs) without your clients being aware of it because you still retain your email address. Before setting up your account, an important point to keep in mind is that you need to register your domain name first. In this way, nobody else can claim it and you can freely use it when creating your unique email addresses.

Q. Choosing an Internet Hosting Package

Special Dessert: Underberg Sorbet - German Recipes - German Food

underberg USAThe herbal German liqueur ?Underberg? has a tradition indeed, and its story began in 1846 when Hubert Underberg married Katharina Albrecht and founded the company Underberg-Albrecht at the Town Hall of the German city Rheinberg.? Years before Mr Underberg started to develop a drink that was more defined that the herbal elixirs he found in Netherlands and Belgium, and he selected several herbs that had some healing power and added them to the liqueur. With these herbs a new brand was born: Underberg, the Herbal Dig?stif. The brand Underberg is now in the 5th generation of the family Underberg and it will not change.

Hubert Underberg I.
Hubert?s Success

With its uniquely soothing properties and consistent quality the product quickly became a success. The brand was soon famous, and Hubert Underberg was awarded resounding titles such as Purveyor to the Court. At the World Exhibitions in London, Paris and Philadelphia, the company?s founder won medals for his product.

The Tall Glass

At the Paris Exhibition of 1867, Hubert Underberg had the the exclusive 2 cl tall glass made. More than ever, the hand blown glass is now characteristic of Underberg. It is 24cm or 9,5 inches high, and is much taller than any other glasses you would use on a festive table. During WWII production had been stopped temporarily as it was not possible to procure the necessary herbs.

underberg liqueurRheinberger Herbal Digestive

You probably have seen the little 20ml single-portion bottles; maybe in Germany where they sell them in every restaurant or in America even on Amazon. The special little Underberg bottle became famous and from now on, nobody else could sell fake herbal drinks in Underberg bottles. Emil Underberg, a grandson of Hubert, created the Rheinberger Herbal Digestive and until nowadays it is the way how you would enjoy the liquor: out of 20ml bottles.

Underberg is the liqueur you would drink after a good meal and one 20ml bottle is just right. Now you also can use Underberg in some special recipes like the sorbets that are below. In Germany there is an award program ongoing and the glasses are part of it, you cannot buy them in a store; unfortunately the award program has not started yet in the USA. So if you want to make these delicious sorbets, use some tall champagne flutes or glasses.
Click here to see this video; it shows how Underberg is served and why!

93% Farewell, My Queen

If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette. As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story. Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film. With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings. Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best. Apple patent win may reshape sector

Apple's decisive victory in a landmark US patent case against Samsung could reshape the hot sector for mobile devices and slow the momentum of Google and its Android system, analysts say.

Apple won more than $1 billion in the case Friday, after a California jury found the South Korean electronics giant infringed on dozens of patents held by the iPhone and iPad maker.

Although Google was not a party in the case, it makes the Android operating system which was central to the case -- a system which Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs called a "stolen" product.

Apple has been battling as Samsung and other manufacturers of the free Android system eat away at its market share in the sizzling market for smartphones and tablet computers.

"I think this will force a reset on Android products as they are reengineered to get around Apple's patents," said Rob Enderle, a technology analyst and consultant with the Enderle Group.

But Enderle said other companies may benefit from the decision, including Microsoft, which has been lagging in the mobile sector, and Blackberry maker Research in Motion, which has been hit hardest by the rise of Android devices.

The court ruling, said Enderle, "should provide a stronger opportunity for both of Microsoft's new platforms -- Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 -- because they come with indemnification against Apple, suddenly making them far safer and possibly a faster way to get product to market."

The decision also "will make RIM far more attractive as an acquisition because RIM's patents are thought to be strong enough to hold off Apple," Enderle said.

"Both Samsung and Google may make a play for the company, and both Microsoft and Apple may move to block them."

In recent months, Android devices have grabbed more than 50 percent of the US smartphone market to around 30 percent for Apple, while RIM's shares have slid to around 12 percent.

The patents at play include software such as the "bounceback" feature for smartphone users when scrolling and pinch-zooming, which are featured on Android devices.

Florian Mueller, a consultant who follows patent and copyright issues, said Friday's court ruling was "a huge breakthrough."

"The jury essentially concluded that Samsung is a reckless copycat and, since some of the infringement is Google's responsibility, basically agreed with Steve Jobs's claim that Android is a stolen product," he wrote on his blog.

Still, a lot hinges on what happens next in court, with the case likely to be tied up in appeal for some time.

Judge Lucy Koh set a September 20 hearing where she will consider whether to overturn or modify the jury verdict, whether to impose "punitive" damages which would triple the award and whether to issue injunctions against Samsung.

A critical factor will be whether Apple will be able to obtain a permanent injunction, or halt in sales on infringing Samsung devices, and whether this would be enforced during the appeal.

Dennis Crouch, a University of Missouri patent law specialist, said the judge will have broad discretion.

"Some courts have issued broad injunctions that essentially say 'stop infringing the patent,' others issue much more narrow orders directed only toward the particular products that are adjudged to infringe," Crouch said on his blog.

"The reality is that Samsung has been planning for the likelihood of injunctive relief and is surely ready to stop selling any of the infringing products and replace those products with ones that at least have not yet been adjudged as infringing."

This could lead to more legal battles, since Apple has another lawsuit pending on Samsung's newer handheld devices.

Samsung has pledged to keep fighting the case, and said that if it stands "it will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices."

Samsung called it "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies."

Analysts say that aside from Samsung, Google could be the big loser, especially if Apple pursues its litigation against other manufacturers.

"Google cannot stop Apple. It is now on the run and will have to scramble to make software changes to Android," Mueller said.

"In a few years, the San Jose jury verdict may -- I repeat, MAY -- be remembered as the tipping point that sent Android on a downward spiral."

Search Engine Optimisation ? What You Need to Know

WNA Blog Home

August 27, 2012 | Debra Barber Find out what you need to know about Search Engine Optimisation and what it can be doing for your business.

Find out what you need to know about Search Engine Optimisation and what it can be doing for your business.

The growth of the Internet has definitely brought up the need?for Search Engine Optimisation?- a term that, although not new, seems to be talked about everywhere.

Search Engine Optimisation is required on your website as a means of driving traffic to your website using relative keywords or key phrases targeted to your consumers and the products or services you offer. There are a few ways that Search Engine Optimisation helps to get your website noticed.

These are:

  1. Indexing
Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing use what are known as crawlers or bots that find pages according to the users search term entered into their Search Engine. Search Engines offer Pay-Per-Click and also flat rate advertising if you would like to get your website on paid results in their SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). Having a page in the SERPs isn?t really great if you?re on page 14 or really anywhere other than page 1. This is where indexing comes in. The crawlers or bots will look over the site, even though sometimes excluding certain ages, and once they do crawl a page, it will be indexed in search engines so that when someone submits a search, they may not land on your page. TIP: ensure your information is live on your site before you submit your URL to search engines.
  2. Exclusion
We have referred to crawlers or bots above and we refer to them again here. Crawlers or bots can look for content they want to be placed in SERPs as well as looking for content they want excluded from SERPs. To exclude a page, the crawlers are given instructions NOT to visit certain types of files or directories. TIP: you have to be certain that the type of content you have is suitable or else you run the risk of being excluded from SERPs no matter how unique and plentiful your content is, you will never get up the rankings of the search engines.
  3. Elevating reputation
You can elevate your reputation using a variety of techniques one is known as Cross Linking. Cross Linking allows you to link the pages of your website so you can have more links to your website which increases your websites visibility. You can also add keywords and key phrases to your Meta Data (meta tag and meta description). There are numerous methods that can be used If you have more than one URL with similar names; you may link them in such a way that the accumulated traffic you receive from both can be used to push traffic to one elevating your reputation.
  4. Black Hat techniques vs. White Hat techniques
These two phrases describe the types of techniques used by Search Engine Optimisation firms. A good firm will only use White Hat techniques as we do. White Hat techniques really are the only way to do SEO as they follow all the rules stipulated by Search Engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo, and Bing). Black Hat techniques are not recommended and by using these techniques you run the risk of your site being banned from SERPs. These techniques include cloaking where the website would give crawlers a page and give a human another page instead, hiding the text by placing it outside the visible screen or cloaking it by making the text the same colour as the background.

This information should give you some tips and information on Search Engine Optimisation; how it is done, how it should be done and the benefits of applying White Hat techniques and doing things the correct way. Also, remember to be aware of the implications of doing Search Engine Optimisation improperly.

?TIP: beware of going for the cheapest quotes for SEO as it is likely the cheaper the service, the more likely it is that the firm is using black hat techniques.

Have you been using SEO techniques that have worked really?well for your business? Leave a comment so other business women reading our blog?can also?learn from your skills.

New device to remove stroke-causing blood clots proves better than standard tool

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a common cause of long-term disability in the United States, but doctors have very few proven treatment methods. Now a new device that mechanically removes stroke-causing clots from the brain is being hailed as a game-changer.

In a recent clinical trial, the SOLITAIRE Flow Restoration Device dramatically outperformed the standard mechanical treatment. Findings from the trial, called SOLITAIRE With the Intention for Thrombectomy (SWIFT), are published online August 26 in the journal The Lancet and will also appear in a later print edition of the journal.

SOLITAIRE, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March, is among an entirely new generation of devices designed to remove blood clots from blocked brain arteries in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. It has a self-expanding, stent-like design, and once inserted into a blocked artery using a thin catheter tube, it compresses and traps the clot. The clot is then removed by withdrawing the device, reopening the blocked blood vessel.

"This new device is significantly changing the way we can treat ischemic stroke," said the study's lead author, Dr. Jeffrey L. Saver, director of the UCLA Stroke Center and a professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We are going from our first generation of clot-removing procedures, which were only moderately good in reopening target arteries, to now having a highly effective tool."

Results of the study showed that the device opened blocked vessels without causing symptomatic bleeding in or around the brain in 61 percent of patients. The standard FDA-approved mechanical device -- a corkscrew-type clot remover called the MERCI Retriever -- was effective in 24 percent of cases. The use of SOLITAIRE also led to better survival three months after a stroke. There was a 17.2 percent mortality rate with the new device, compared with a 38.2 percent rate with the older one.

About 87 percent of all strokes are caused by blood clots blocking a blood vessel supplying the brain. The stroke treatment that has received the most study is an FDA-approved clot-busting drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, but this drug must be given within four-and-a-half hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, and even more quickly in older patients.

When clot-busting drugs cannot be used or are ineffective, the clot can sometimes be mechanically removed during, or beyond, the four-and-a-half-hour window. The current study, however, did not compare mechanical clot removal to drug treatment.

For the trial, researchers randomly assigned 113 stroke patients at 18 hospitals to receive either SOLITAIRE or MERCI therapy within eight hours of stroke onset, between January 2010 and February 2011. The patients' average age was 67, and 68 percent were male. The time from the beginning of stroke symptoms to the start of the clot-retriever treatment averaged 5.1 hours. Forty percent of the patients had not improved with standard clot-busting medication prior to the study, while the remainder had not received it.

At the suggestion of a safety monitoring committee, the trial was ended nearly a year earlier than planned due to significantly better outcomes with the experimental device.

Other statistically significant findings included:

? 2 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had symptoms of bleeding in the brain, compared with 11 percent of MERCI patients.

? At the 90-day follow-up, overall adverse event rates, including bleeding in the brain, were similar for the two devices.

? 58 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had good mental/motor functioning at 90 days, compared with 33 percent of MERCI patients.

? The SOLITARE device also opened more vessels when used as the first treatment approach, necessitating fewer subsequent attempts with other devices or drugs.

Motivation for DDoS attacks is no longer fun and games ? Secure ...

By Michael E. Donner, SVP, CMO, Prolexic

The word ?hacker? used to conjure up an image of a geeky teenager in a messy bedroom hacking into corporate IT systems just for fun.

Well the fun and games are over.

Today?s hacktivist groups such as Anonymous and LulzSec are making DDoS a household word as they make headlines after successfully attacking US government agencies and large corporate brands. In fact, public awareness of DDoS in the mainstream media is one of the most striking changes in the DDoS landscape over the past 18 to 24 months.

We?ve seen several emerging motivators for DDoS attacks. In addition to ideological and political protesters, some attackers are extortionists who threaten a DDoS attack unless the business pays a ransom by a specified deadline. In addition, whilst rare, some attacks are cybercrimes or cyber espionage ? essentially a personal vendetta by a business competitor, a disgruntled customer or former employee, or a group of hackers whose sole intent is cyber hate-crime. The most vulnerable assets in this case are online gaming websites and those associated with specific minority, religious, or alternative lifestyles.

The fact is, however, that all online businesses are at risk of a DDoS attack.

Knowledge is power when creating an enterprise DDoS protection strategy:

  • Keep IT informed of any corporate policies with potentially controversial political or social justice overtones that might trigger a hacktivist attack.
  • Be sure to monitor social media and blog chatter about your company and note inflammatory postings that could motivate an attack.
  • Never ignore blackmail or extortion threats with DDoS as the consequences; inform your IT staff and your DDoS protection provider and take proactive defensive action. Informing law enforcement can also give you an early edge on bringing the attackers to justice.
  • Another warning sign is when a competitor or business partner suffers a DDoS attack; this could indicate a trend for attackers to target your industry.

?

While it may by tempting to keep DDoS protection in house and under the control of an internal IT group, be warned. Many current DDoS attacks are not only very large in size, requiring massive, dedicated networks to absorb them, they are often highly sophisticated, exhibiting multiple attack vectors and sometimes encryption.? For these reasons, it usually makes sense to outsource DDoS protection to a specialist provider with the bandwidth and expertise needed to mitigate these attacks quickly so downtime is minimized.

The Prolexic Security Engineering and Response Team (PLXsert) has tracked a steady increase in the frequency, size and intensity of DDoS attacks over the last year.? Comparing the first two quarters of 2102 there was a 10% increase in total number of attacks, an 8% rise in Layer 3 and 4 infrastructure attacks and a declining average attack duration, down to 17 hours from 28.5 in the previous quarter.? These findings can be downloaded from www.prolexic.com/attackreports.

A decline in application layer attacks (Layer 7) can be attributed to the proliferation of easy to use, but powerful DDoS attack tools that target network infrastructure.? Regardless, one fairly obvious conclusion can be drawn :? the threat of being victimized by a DDoS attack is not declining, making DDoS protection critical for businesses that depend on the Internet.

To boost your DDoS defenses, work with your DDoS protection provider to stay constantly informed of trends in DDoS attacks. Your provider should be able to report quarterly statistics on types of attacks and attack origins, as well as issue threat advisories and recommended countermeasures. The more you know about DDoS and the mindset of the attackers the better. Stay informed and proactive. Be vigilant. It?s the foundation for successfully defending your business against ongoing and increasing DDoS threats.

LONDON (AP) ? Brace yourself, Harry.

A prominent British public relations guru said Friday he'd been approached by two women who claimed to have more material on Prince Harry, raising the possibility that the world may soon be seeing more compromising images of the British royal.

Earlier this week, celebrity gossip website TMZ published photos of Harry romping in the nude during a party at his Las Vegas hotel suite. Many Britons have laughed off the 27-year-old prince's hijinks, but questions have been raised about his publicly-funded security detail.

In a telephone interview, publicist Max Clifford said he had been called by two American women who claim they were in the prince's hotel room in the U.S. last week. Clifford, a savvy operator famous for negotiating kiss-and-tell interviews, said the women "said they had lots of interesting things: pictures, video, that kind of thing."

He said he turned them down.

"I couldn't justify this," he said. "It's an infringement of his privacy. That's why I said no."

On Thursday, TMZ claimed that "several girls" had taken pictures at the party using their cellphones as the party got started and that "more photos were taken" after the clothes came off. Neither TMZ nor Clifford has made clear whether they believe the unreleased photographs show the prince in the nude.

British publications have largely steered clear of the photographs, with the prominent exception of Rupert Murdoch's The Sun tabloid, which became the first paper to splash the pictures across its front page on Friday with the words: "HEIR IT IS!" and marketing the grainy photograph as a "souvenir printed edition."

The paper said it had defied the wishes of the royal family because there was a public interest in knowing what the prince, who represented the queen at the 2012 Olympic Games and is heavily involved in charity work, got up to while abroad.

Privacy lawyer Chris Hutchings said that the paper's public interest argument could have traction.

"The public interest argument is on the basis that Prince Harry represents this country around the world and the photos bring into question his suitability to act as a British ambassador," Hutchings said, although he added: "The Sun have taken a calculated risk in publishing the photos given their inherently private nature."

As of Friday, the palace hasn't made any official complaint.

D-list actor allegedly threatens Harvey Weinstein's family

(WireImage/Getty Images)An aspiring actor who allegedly made death threats against Harvey Weinstein's family in an attempt to extort $4 million from the film producer has been arrested by federal agents.

Vivek Shah, 25, was living in West Hollywood, Calif., while trying to launch a career in film and television. The Akron, Ohio, native, whose biggest claims to fame are bit parts on "Bones," "Outsourced" and an unaccredited role in "The Dark Knight," attempted a fast-track to fortune by allegedly shaking down one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, among other powerful magnates.

Shah is accused of sending menacing letters not only to Weinstein, the Oscar-winning producer of "Shakespeare in Love," but also to four other millionaire tycoons, including a coal magnate, an oil executive and the owner of an NHL team.

"Each of these letters contained a threat to kill named members of the recipient's family unless a large sum of money was wired to an offshore bank account," Postal Inspector Joshua Mehall said in a sworn affidavit.

Weinstein is not named in the affidavit, but the 60-year-old co-chairman of The Weinstein Co. is described as "a Connecticut resident and co-founder of a film studio." Weinstein lives in Westport, Conn., where he recently hosted a $35,800-per-person fundraising event for Barack Obama.

Also allegedly targeted by Shah was coal magnate Christopher Cline, who is worth an estimated $1.5 billion, and from whom Shah allegedly attempted to extort $13 million. The affidavit signed by Mehall indicated that a letter sent to Cline contained "wiring instructions for a bank in Cyprus."

Although his acting resume is thin, Shah, a self-described "entrepreneur" and film producer, can be seen photographed in shots posted on his Facebook profile and IMDb page alongside some of Hollywood's elite actors, including Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Zach Galifianakis and many others.

Shah was arrested Aug. 10 by federal agents at his parents' home near Chicago after he was named in a U.S. District Court complaint for allegedly sending threatening interstate communications. He is being held without bail in West Virginia, which is where one of his alleged targets lives.

According to documents posted on The Smoking Gun, Shah was "scheduled for training in handgun shooting" at a gun range in Los Angeles, investigators say.

Shah was born in Ohio, but moved to India for 10 years with his family before returning to the United States, according to his IMDb profile. He studied at Columbia College Chicago and later at the Chicago Actors Studio and Chicago's Second City Training Center.

If convicted of the felony charges, Shah faces a maximum 20-year prison term.
