How Obama, Romney are spinning court's health-care ruling

Republicans and Democrats are putting their political spin on the US Supreme Court's historic and startling decision on the Affordable Care Act. As they head toward the presidential election, both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have major challenges in interpreting the law.

Ever since the US Supreme Court issued its startling decision on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Thursday morning, the presidential campaigns of both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have been spinning the ruling like crazy.

Just some of the issues with wildly different political interpretations include: Defining the details and impact of what the court says plainly is a form of taxation ? the basis, in fact, of the constitutionality of what critics call ?Obamacare.? What the outcome would be for Medicare. The number of already-insured Americans who would have to scramble to find new health care coverage. Whether or not the ACA is a ?job-killer.? Whether or not the deficit would go up or down as a result of this landmark legislation.

Obama may have won big in the high court ? ?Did Obama Just Get His Mojo Back?? asks the headline on a piece at Slate ? but both the President and his likely GOP competitor have major political challenges as a result of the ruling.

How much do you know about health-care reform? Take our quiz.

For Obama, it?s the ACA?s cost to individuals and families of a massive new government program designed to reform health care insurance in major ways, and Republicans were quick to jump on that.

In the GOP?s Saturday radio address, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo. (who?s a physician) said this:

?President Obama has repeatedly promised, and I quote, 'if you're a family making less than $250,000 a year, my plan,' he said, 'won't raise your taxes one penny.' Now, all of America knows the truth. The President's health care law hires more IRS agents to investigate you and to make sure you buy insurance ? but it fails to deal with the shortage of nurses and doctors to actually take care of you.?

The Supreme Court?s majority opinion did say the ACA is constitutional because of Congress?s taxing authority, so that?ll take some explaining by the Obama administration.

What Romney has to explain is why that?s substantially different from his signature achievement as governor of Massachusetts: A statewide health insurance program that includes an individual mandate and the taxing authority to enforce it.

?I don't think of the mandate as a tax ? I think of it is a free rider penalty,? Jon Gruber, the MIT economist who helped craft the Massachusetts and national laws, told Politico.com. ?But if you want to think of it as a tax, then it is exactly the same tax ? Romney imposed.?

Michael Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation ? a business-backed fiscal watchdog that has analyzed the state?s health care law for years ? agreed, Politico reported. ?If one?s a tax, the other?s a tax,? he said.

Necrosis

Tiberius was sitting in his office. It was very...traditional. the four walls of the room were bolstered by the feeling like you were in the wilderness and in a log cabin. Isolated. Alone. On these wooden edifices were portraits of former Deans of course, to go along with such a 'rustic' appearance was a fireplace with a large mantle of carved marble that looked straight up like ivory and bone. It crackled and cackled to its master, begging his attention yet--Tiberius was much too drawn away for it. In return, the vermilon haze drifted over the dark wooden floors, over the antique Indonesian rug and over the furnishings of the room. The two leather upholstered chairs before a dark cherry stained desk that the Dean sat behind.

There was even a lounge chair where students could come to him to relax and tell him their worries. The Dean carried man responsibilities.playing a partial councilor was just one of them. Most did not remember what a 'Dean' really was in the first place, that it stemmed heavily from Clunic Reformed medieval monasteries.Where monks numbering in the thousands, large enough to fill a small college campus, and would be divided into ten. The title Dean stemmed from the Latin 'Decanus' meaning 'leader of ten'.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Tiberius Maximus Caine.

Tiberius' eyes fell into saccadic motion as his hand gripped the brush and with it, dunk it into an ebony pot of the more 'smooth' liquid paste known commonly as 'ink'. This ink, however, was a composite. Comprised of soot and animal glue. The same animal glue that was a protein colloid made from hydrolysis of the collagen of the skin, the bones and the tendons and other connective tissues. Most commonly it was a horse, however, this was a special glue. It reminded him of his latest kill. For very good reason too.

Making sure he had just enough, but not overly too much--scraping fine animal hairs along the inside of the delicate glass jar. The black ink had almost a red tinge to it. A sinister and grim fate his victim had fallen to. To fall so short of what was expected-- only the strong thrived in this world. If killing a man was tantamount to any grievous injury be it emotional, physical or mental then truly he was lost for the cause. If it equated the value of man--then he was paramount. Such was the machinations of this dismal world. And as he set the brush down against the solid sheet of parchment; hand fluidly devising each stroke carefully, with painstaking precision it became clear once again what he was.

A hunter. A killer of men. A manslayer. A murderer. A saint to some, and a dubious Armageddon to others.

Each stroke, every line of the calligraphic note he drew--each pulsated with the final moments of his victims thoughts. It begged at him, hearkened him to pull from this reverie he was slowly languishing in. He relished the ardor in secret. The precise moment when, he was God and could feel the life evaporate from another human being. It didn't come easily to him, not at first. But when Oblivion takes you, wraps you in its cold embrace. Any form of satisfaction becomes a lifelong dream.

He heard the knock at his door. The one that bore the prestigious gilded plate bearing his name. A name which, frankly, bothered him. For shadows had no names. They had no personalities, no feelings. They were whispers and rumors. They were, that feeling of constant dread in knowing there is nothing you could do to belay you own demise.

Calmly, he sat the brush in the jar. Rolled his parchment neatly, almost with an obessive-compulsory reaction, and slid from his chair and sauntered across the open room. His hand gripping the horizontal handle as he pulled it to. "Yes, how may I help you miss..?" It was a transient question deferring to revealing her name. Yet this one appeared, 'different' than the students he would normally associate with. Older perhaps, she carried her self with satisfaction with confidence rather than a girl who was insecure or..god forbid...'bitchy'.

The physics of going viral

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have been able, for the first time, to watch viruses infecting individual bacteria by transferring their DNA, and to measure the rate at which that transfer occurs. Shedding light on the early stages of infection by this type of virus?a bacteriophage?the scientists have determined that it is the cells targeted for infection, rather than the amount of genetic material within the viruses themselves, that dictate how quickly the bacteriophage's DNA is transferred.

"The beauty of our experiment is we were able to watch individual viruses infecting individual bacteria,"says Rob Phillips, the Fred and Nancy Morris Professor of Biophysics and Biology at Caltech and the principal investigator on the new study. "Other studies of the rate of infection have involved bulk measurements. With our methods, you can actually watch as a virus shoots out its DNA."

The new methods and results are described in a paper titled "A Single-Molecule Hershey?Chase Experiment," which will appear in the July 24 issue of the journal Current Biology and currently appears online. The lead authors of that paper, David Van Valen and David Wu, completed the work while graduate students in Phillips's group.

In the well-known 1952 Hershey-Chase experiment, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Cold Spring Harbor convincingly confirmed earlier claims that DNA?and not protein?was the genetic material in cells. To prove this, the researchers used bacteriophages, which are able to infect bacteria using heads of tightly bundled DNA coated in a protein shell. Hershey and Chase radiolabeled sulfur, contained in the protein shell but not in the DNA, and phosphorous, found in the DNA but not in the protein shell. Then they let the bacteriophages infect the bacterial cells. When they isolated the cells and analyzed their contents, they found that only the radioactive phosphorous had made its way into the bacteria, proving that DNA is indeed the genetic material. The results also showed that, unlike the viruses that infect humans, bacteriophages transmit only their genetic information into their bacterial targets, leaving their "bodies" behind.

"This led, right from the get-go, to people wondering about the mechanism?about how the DNA gets out of the virus and into the infected cell," Phillips says. Several hypotheses have focused on the fact that the DNA in the virus is under a tremendous amount of pressure. Indeed, previous work has shown that the genetic material is under more pressure within its protein shell than champagne experiences in a corked bottle. After all, as Phillips says, "There are 16 microns [16,000 nanometers] of DNA in a tiny 50-nanometer-sized shell. It's like taking 500 meters of cable from the Golden Gate Bridge and putting it in the back of a FedEx truck."

Phillips's group wanted to find out whether that pressure plays a dominant role in transferring the DNA. Instead, he says, "What we discovered is that the thing that mattered most was not the pressure in the bacteriophage, but how much DNA was in the bacterial cell."

This video begins with a lambda bacteriophage attached to an E. coli cell with the phage's DNA labeled with a fluorescent dye. The phage injects its viral DNA into the cell, and as the ejection proceeds, the dye molecules are transferred. Once inside the cell, the dye redistributes to the bacterium's genome, causing the whole cell to light up. Credit: Caltech

The researchers used a fluorescent dye to stain the DNA of two mutants of a bacteriophage known as lambda bacteriophage?one with a short genome and one with a longer genome?while that DNA was still inside the phage. Using a fluorescence microscope, they traced the glowing dye to see when and over what time period the viral DNA transferred from each phage into an E. coli bacterium. The mean ejection time was about five minutes, though that time varied considerably.

This was markedly different from what the group had seen previously when they ran a similar experiment in a test tube. In that earlier setup, they had essentially tricked the bacteriophages into ejecting their DNA into solution?a task that the phages completed in less than 10 seconds. In that case, once the phage with the longer genome had released enough DNA to make what remained inside the phage equal in length to the shorter genome, the two phages ejected DNA at the same rate. Therefore, Phillips's team reasoned, it was the amount of DNA in the phage that determined how quickly the DNA was transferred.

But Phillips says, "What was true in the test tube is not true in the cell." E. coli cells contain roughly 3 million proteins within a box that is roughly one micron (1,000 nanometers) on each side. Less than 10 nanometers separate each protein from its neighbors. "There's no room for anything else," Phillips says. "These cells are really crowded."

And so, when the bacteriophages try to inject their DNA into the cells, the factor that limits the rate of transfer is how jam-packed those cells are. "In this case," Phillips says, "it had more to do with the recipient, and less to do with the pressure that had built up inside the phage."

Looking toward the future, Phillips is interested in using the methods he and his team have developed to study different types of bacteriophages. He also wants to investigate various molecules that could be helping to actively pull the viral DNA into the cells. In the case of a bacteriophage called T7, for instance, previous work has shown that the host cell actually grabs onto the DNA and begins making copies of its genes before the virus has even delivered all the DNA into the cell. "We're curious whether that kind of mechanism is in play with the lambda bacteriophage," Phillips says.

The current findings have implications for the larger question of how biomolecules like DNA and proteins cross membranes in general, and not just into bacteria. Cells are full of membranes that divide them into separate compartments and that separate entire cells from the rest of the world. Much of the business of cellular life involves getting molecules across those barriers. "This process that we've been studying is one of the most elementary examples of what you could call polymer translocation or getting macromolecules across membranes," Phillips says. "We are starting to figure out the physics behind that process."

Does Jupiter Have More Water Than NASA's Galileo Detected?

I think that the 50 years of space exploration shows that we are most interested in life that is somewhat like us, in settings we can understand. Bacteria on Mars ? Fish on Europa ? Yes, launch the spacecraft! Floating life at 40 km altitude on Venus or in the clouds of Jupiter or Saturn ? Not so much. And, yet, the atmospheres of both Venus and Jupiter show signs of being out of chemical equilibria, the essential signature of a biological system.

People need to understand how slowly we are exploring the solar system. Yes, substantial progress is being made, but it is taking a long time to settle even the most basic questions. Ones that are rated secondary (such as life on Jupiter) could take a century or more to address.

MenuLe Creole recently teamed up with Roux Wine and Spirits to put on a Romantic Summer Dinner crafted by Chef Ryan Andre. ?Fresh off the news of being named as one of the five 2012 Chefs to Watch by Louisiana Cookin' Magazine, Chef Andre picked a great way to show off his skills in the kitchen. ?Myrna Arroyo from Roux Wine and Spirits paired each dish with amazing wines that are available in her shop on Airline Highway. ?The match quickly proved to be magical with the onslaught of passed hors d'oeuvres and sparkling wine. ?Chef's first dishes included a one-bite fried Gulf oyster with micro greens and spicy tuna toast that nearly melted in my mouth. ?The Brut wine gave the diners an excellent excuse to toast each other, and it partnered very nicely with the seafood appetizers.Le Creole and Roux Wine put on a romantic wine dinner in Baton Rouge

The friendly wait staff at Le Creole brought out the wild salmon crudo for our first course after being seated in the spacious dining room. ?The plentiful slices of wild Atlantic salmon were topped with a salad of arugula, red onion, crispy capers, and white truffle salt. ?Though the salad provided a whole meal of food, I can't complain about large portion sizes! ?Plus, everything tasted so well balanced and flavored that I couldn't stop tasting... then tasting again. ?The raw salmon had an ideal texture and the truffle salt provided just the right amount of flavor to compliment the dish rather than overpower it.

The next course is the one that I smiled about the most when glancing over the menu before the meal. ?The "battling rabbits" featured a rabbit liver bruschetta with spicy tomato jam along side a rabbit boudin gallette. ?The livers themselves were delicate and delicious, cooked down to a spreadable form over the crusty bread with a spicy tomato jam that could be bottled and sold. ?Chef took his house-made rabbit boudin and formed it into patties before coating them in panko bread crumbs and flash frying them. ?Add a couple pickled watermelon rind slivers, and we had quite a plate before us. ?The gallette provided an excellent contrast of textures between the crunchy exterior and the moist interior. ?I applaud the creativity of the dish as a whole, and it lived up to my high hopes.

The "bayou to nest" dish featured tempura battered and fried soft shell crawfish along with a roasted squab with patty pan squash and baby zucchini. ?Another dish with plenty to eat, I tried my hardest to take the whole thing down. ?Squab is a decent sized pigeon for one person, but I enjoyed the presentation of the entire bird on the plate. ?It had a sweet sauce along with it that actually worked quite well. ?And the soft shell crawfish were amazingly unique and delightful.

The meal ended with a mousse tuille duo conjured up by Le Creole's pastry chef. ?The plate came with a Ponchatoula strawberry mousse along with a dark chocolate-espresso mousse. ?The mousse duo dish provided a great way to end the stomach-stuffing meal. ?They were light and refreshing enough to still enjoy them despite having very limited gastronomic real estate for them to go.

The dinner as a whole lived up to all expectations. ?I'd like to congratulate Chef Ryan Andre and manager Clark Ellis on the phenomenal event hosting and the meal. ?Also props to Myrna Arroyo for the wine pairings! ?Though not mentioned much here, the wines were all?exquisite?and wonderfully paired with the cuisine. ?I'd be happy to go to any tag-team dinner like this again. ?Not to mention, I really enjoy two businesses in the food and drink world coming together to support and promote each other. ?Nothing like some good collaboration! ?Cheers!

Cyborg system stifles your need to drink water

1 day

The Japanese design studio Takram was asked to design a water bottle for people to use after a hypothetical future environmental disaster. Takram, imagining what a world would be like with rising sea levels and radioactive disasters, thought that we probably wouldn?t be carrying around water bottles. Instead, they designed an entirely new organ system, to be implanted in the body, that would mean we used less water in the first place.

Its solution, called the Hydrolemic System, involves both harvesting more moisture from the air than our current unmodified bodies are capable of, and also doing more to retain the water we have. The company imagines that system would require us to drink 0.1 cups of water a day.

Inserts that go in our noses convert moisture in the air we breathe into water, and other inserts at the ends of our renal and digestive systems keep water from leaving by those routes. A collar on our neck helps prevent perspiration by turning our body heat into electricity, so it doesn?t make us perspire, losing precious liquid.

Click through the slide show for more details.

Let's?hope for a world in which our designers are just designing water bottles with more convenient handles, rather than ones you have to go to the hospital to have installed.

Turkey seeks NATO action over Syria jet downing

Reports are surfacing that Syria may have shot down a Turkish fighter jet over Syrian waters in the Mediterranean Sea. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Turkey on Sunday called for an extraordinary meeting of NATO? after one of its planes was shot down by Syria in international airspace ? an incident condemned by Britain as ?outrageous.?

Turkey insisted the plane had mistakenly strayed into Syrian territory andwas not on a spying mission. It?filed an official protest note to Damascus.

State-run TRT television reported that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had called the meeting for Tuesday over article 4 of the NATO charter concerning Friday's incident.

The article says member countries "will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."

The wreckage of the plane was discovered in the Mediterranean on Sunday at a depth of 3,281 feet, TRT reported. The pilots still have not been accounted for.

NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the North Atlantic Council, the principal political decision-making body within the military alliance, would meet in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

"Turkey has requested consultations under Article 4 of Nato?s founding Washington Treaty,? she told Reuters.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the jet downing as "brazen and unacceptable" and vowed close U.S. cooperation with Turkey to promote a political transition in Syria.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday that he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane, and said Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

Turkey: Syria's downing of military jet cannot be ignored

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior. The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Hague met last week with U.N and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team.

"This deplorable incident underlines the urgent need to find a solution to the current crisis in Syria in order to bring an end to the violence and to achieve a genuine political transition," Hague said.

Davutoglu said earlier Sunday that the jet was downed in "international airspace" after it mistakenly strayed into Syria, but the plane was not on a spying mission. He said the plane had entered Syria on Friday, but quickly left when warned by Turkey.

The plane had no "covert mission related to Syria," Davutoglu said, adding that it was purely on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities.

Davutoglu said the plane was shot down one mile inside the airspace several minutes after it left Syria.

Syria on Saturday insisted the shooting was "not an attack," and that the plane had violated its airspace.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

After nearly two weeks on the line, North Metro Fire/Rescue firefighter Brian Lefleur of Broomfield, Colo., packs up his belongings to head home for a few days as a wildfire continues to burn near Livermore, Colo., on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Authorities sent out 992 evacuation notices Friday due to the wildfire burning on more than 100 square miles in northern Colorado as winds pick up. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski)

Unpredictable winds and high temperatures were challenging crews in their battle Saturday against a Utah wildfire that forced more than 2,300 people to flee their homes.

Firefighters were posted around neighborhoods in Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, after the blaze burned within a quarter mile of some homes Friday, said Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby.

No homes have burned, she said, and fire officials want to see what the nearly 9-square-mile fire on tinder-dry grasslands does Saturday afternoon before deciding whether residents can return to homes.

"All the mandatory evacuations are still in effect and homes are still threatened," Rigby told The Associated Press. "We are getting a little better measure of containment in some areas, but we're still not there where we can say it's safe (for the evacuation order to be lifted."

The evacuation order affects nearly 600 homes and over 2,300 residents, according to an updated count released Saturday by fire officials.

Daytime highs in the 90s, 5 percent humidity and wind gusts expected to reach 35 mph were combining to create extreme fire danger, Rigby said.

The fire that officials believe was started Thursday by target shooters was 30 percent contained Saturday afternoon, with full containment expected Tuesday.

Elsewhere:

? In Colorado, firefighters gave up some ground to a wildfire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed at least 191 homes west of Fort Collins. Crews stationed near threatened homes Friday had to retreat for their safety, and the fire's containment slipped from 60 percent to 45 percent. Authorities issued nearly 1,000 evacuation notices Friday night, some of which went to residents who had returned home just two days earlier. Meanwhile, a fire near Mancos in southwestern Colorado prompted authorities to order the evacuation of 55 homes Saturday. The blaze, reported Friday, has burned an estimated 2,500 acres

? In Nevada, a wildfire that has scorched more than 11,000 acres of rugged terrain in northeast Nevada near the Utah line is 75 percent contained. It began as a U.S. Forest Service prescribed burn that escaped June 9.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after crews got a break in the weather. Crews took advantage of heavy rain Friday to increase containment lines on the 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso that began June 4. Meanwhile, the more than 464-square-mile Whitewater-Baldy blaze, the largest in state history, is 87 percent contained. It began May 16 as two lightning-caused blazes that merged to form one fire.

Feds seize disputed dinosaur skeleton

The U.S. government has seized a dinosaur skeleton in New York City that it says was unjustly taken from Mongolia.

The crates holding the Tyrannosaurus bataar fossil were held at a Queens storage facility. The seizure was carried out Friday

A Florida man, Eric Prokopi, says he legitimately obtained the specimen he refers to as "Ty."

Prokopi says he put it together at great expense before it was sold at auction for more than $1 million.

The sale is contingent on the outcome of litigation. The government sued earlier this week to seize the dinosaur for a return to Mongolia.

The head paleontologist with New York's American Museum of Natural History, Mark Norell, said Friday that the fossil should be returned quickly to Mongolia.

Meanwhile, Prokopi, a dealer of fossils who acquired the remains of a dinosaur, said he is "not some international bone smuggler" and that he risked his finances and reputation to put together the skeleton to promote a love of science in others.

Prokopi, 37, struck back Thursday at the U.S. government's account of the Tyrannosaurus bataar fossil it seized to hand over to Mongolia.

"I'm just a guy in Gainesville, Florida trying to support my family, not some international bone smuggler," he said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press.

He said transforming chunks of rocks and broken bones "into an impressive skeleton took thousands of hours and every penny my wife and I had, but it was fascinating."

"We were thrilled and couldn't wait to share him with the world, and hoped it would inspire others to see the magic of paleontology and develop a love of science and appreciation of nature," Prokopi said.

Prokopi contested government claims in papers it filed in federal court in Manhattan this week that the skeleton was brought from Great Britain to Gainesville in March 2010 with erroneous claims that it had originated in Great Britain and was worth only $15,000. It was sold at auction last month for more than $1 million, though the sale was contingent upon the outcome of litigation.

A judge earlier this week said the government could seize the 8-foot-tall, 24-foot-long skeleton from a Queens art storage facility because it appears the government will succeed in its claims. Prokopi accused the government of caving to the will of Mongolia, saying he hoped "the American legal system will uphold the American laws and not sacrifice my rights and freedoms to please a foreign government out for a political trophy."

The commercial paleontologist said that the U.S. government wrongly claimed he misrepresented what was being imported and its value.

"I can wholeheartedly say the import documents are not fraudulent, a truth I am confident will be brought to light in the coming weeks," he said. "The value was declared much lower than the auction value because, quite simply, it was loose, mostly broken bones and rocks with embedded bones. It was not what you see today, a virtually complete, mounted skeleton."

Ellen Davis, a spokeswoman for government lawyers, declined to comment Thursday.

Prokopi said and his wife hoped the skeleton would be bought by a museum or collector who would put it in a public forum, but the controversy that erupted caused museums to back out of the sale.

Prokopi also challenged assertions by experts that the skeleton had to originate in Mongolia, saying it was true that they are mainly known to come from the Gobi desert of Mongolia, "but they've also been found elsewhere, and it's certainly possible a new locality with complete specimens was discovered in another country."

He said they were "stunned by some of the public's reaction to the sale because commercial paleontology and private collectors are a vital part of bringing some of nature's most precious treasures to museums worldwide."

Prokopi also challenged claims by some experts that the skeleton was collected poorly.

"I believe this specimen was expertly excavated, and the only damage that was done was caused by the elements," he said. "The claws and some teeth had weathered away and some teeth had slipped out before burial. I believe this specimen was expertly excavated, and the only damage that was done was caused by the elements."

He said claims by experts that it had been unearthed in the last 17 years could not be trusted.

"Other than the diggers, there is no way for anyone to know for certain when or where the specimen was collected," Prokopi said.

He defended commercial paleontology, saying the business was "full of intelligent, passionate people who love paleontology, not bone smugglers just looking to steal from important scientific research."

He said he was "headed toward total financial ruin" because the lost sale of the dinosaur had "irreparably devastated my family financially, it has cost several people their jobs, taken an emotional toll on my life and two young children and damaged my reputation as a commercial paleontologist."

Prokopi added: "If it weren't for people like me, some of these bones would just turn to dust and none of us would ever get to see or study them."

Not the dating kind, because those have a pain all their own (Dan and I spent the first two months of our courtship 2,500 miles apart), but the family kind. The kind where your niece is growing up somewhere in the country and your biggest fear is that she won't know you; that your brother, your dear big brother, is in the Army and over in Afghanistan for a year, so of course your relationship with him has gotten better and been deeper than it ever has before; that your parents, your two best friends in the world who have always been there for you and who love you more than anything in the universe, are 2,500 miles away still back in Pennsylvania, and the tears are officially coming now. That your sister-in-law and you never have been really close, but how you want to be, and how the distance makes it that much harder; that your two best friends in the galaxy who just so happen to be married to each other are in a different country, and are going through pregnancy without you, and how you're longing to just touch the baby bump and pray over the momma and dear little bean all the time.

It is so difficult, so painful, and I have no idea why God allows it. How I wish He would just let my favorite man on the planet aka my hubs, and I to live in a small village with our dearest friends and family, and to be protected from sin and sickness... er, I guess that's called Heaven. But please Lord, I would like that sometime during this life on this side of eternity. I trust Your perfect plan; I trust your transformation in all of those I love lives and how your two biggest desires are for Your glory and for us to be more like Christ. Thank you for the privilege to suffer with you.
