Grapevine: iPad 3 is imminent

CUPERTINO, Calif., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- While Apple is still selling millions of the iPad 2 tablet, speculation is already swirling about an iPad 3, tech industry observers say.

With the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show and MacWorld/iWorld -- billed as "the world's ultimate fan event" for Apple lovers -- both scheduled for January, observers are debating whether Apple could soon roll out the third generation of the device, CNN reported.

Apple debuted the iPad, introducing the world to the concept of a tablet computer, in January 2010.

"We've entered a post-iPhone news cycle, when iPad rumors are surfacing with full force," Leslie Horn at PC Magazine wrote. "Of course the launch date has been discussed quite a bit, as it goes with any anticipated Apple device. ... But the reality with an Apple gadget is that we'll have to wait and see."

Some tech watchers said a January release date might be wishful thinking.

January is "a little suspect," Richard Shim, an analyst at research firm DisplaySearch, said.

"When they make them available they want to have as many as possible," Shim said. "And my sense is that they will wait rather than make them immediately available."

Rumors on hardware upgrades center on a faster processor, a sharper screen, and perhaps even voice control similar to the Siri "virtual assistant" on the iPhone 4S.

China reveals its space plans up to 2016 (AP)

BEIJING ? China has released its next five-year space plan to help it on its way to its eventual goals of building a space station and putting a man on the moon.

The white paper released Thursday says that by the end of 2016, China will launch space laboratories, manned spaceships and ship freighters, and make technological preparations for the construction of space stations.

It says the country will carry on exploring the moon using probes, start gathering samples of the moon's surface, and "push forward its exploration of planets, asteroids and the sun."

China places great emphasis on the development of its space industry, which is seen as a symbol of national prestige.

Christmas gift to America 20 years ago ? a Russia to be thankful for

When the Soviet Union collapsed 20 years ago on Christmas, doomsayers had a field day. But seen strictly from the perspective of what matters most to Americans, the good news is that the nightmares that experts realistically expected about Russia have not happened.

In a Christmas gift on Dec. 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. The ?evil empire,? as Ronald Reagan rightly called it, was erased from the map. On its territory, Russia and 14 newly independent states emerged.?

In the rush of the past two decades, ?things have changed so fast we have not yet taken time to be astonished,? the late Czech President Vaclav Havel once observed. The tendency of bad news to drive out the good is well known. How often does a story about positive developments lead television coverage or make the front page? Vladimir Putin?s recent announcement that he will run again for the presidency (and undoubtedly win) casts a cloud that accentuates the negative.?

Nonetheless, as Americans pause during this holiday season to give thanks and reflect, it is appropriate to review what has happened in the new Russia?s first 20 years.?Assessed strictly from the perspective of what matters most to Americans, the good news is that the nightmares that experts realistically expected at the time have not happened.?

Who imagined the Evil Empire disappearing ? without war?

Who imagined US victory over its cold war rival ? with a whimper rather than a bang?

Who imagined a revolution that buried communism ? without blood?

Who imagined that 20 years on, not one single nuclear bomb from the entire Soviet arsenal would have been found loose outside Russia? (Recall that in December 1991, on ?Meet the Press,? then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney forecast: ?If the Soviets do an excellent job at retaining control over their stockpile of nuclear weapons ? and they are 99 percent successful, that would mean you could still have as many as 250 [warheads] they were not able to control.?)

Who imagined that the nation that would do more than any other over these two decades to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons to additional states would be Russia? (Russia took the lead, with a significant American assist, in preventing Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus from inheriting major strategic nuclear arsenals.)

Taylor Lautner 'out and proud' People mag a fake

Twitter

By Sierra Marquina, E! Online

Nice try!

An obviously faked People magazine cover on which Taylor Lautner supposedly announced that he's "out and proud" ricocheted across the internet Monday, tricking fans and even celebs like Russell Simmons.

RELATED: Taylor Lautner On Gay Pals: "I Think They Know I'm Straight"

The Photoshopped image of the purported Jan. 7, 2012 People issue shows the "Twilight" star announcing he's gay and "tired of the rumors."

The fake cover goes on to fake-quote Lautner as saying his decision to come out has left him feeling "more liberated, and happier than I've ever been."

While the internet was abuzz, celebs like Def Jam's Simmons even fell prey to the hoax, tweeting Taylor a congratulatory tweet: "proud of Taylor Lautner for his bravery and his courage."

Once realizing the mistake, Simmons tweeted: "disappointed that people would joke about someone coming out about their sexuality. Let Taylor Lautner be whoever he wants to be...."

A rep for People magazine confirmed the cover a hoax to Gossip Cop, saying the cover is "absolutely fake."

Facebook unwelcome in Vietnam, but Zuckerberg OK (AP)

HANOI, Vietnam ? Vietnam may block its citizens from using Facebook, but that didn't stop website founder Mark Zuckerberg from vacationing in the communist country.

Zuckerberg spent Christmas Eve in the popular tourist destination Ha Long Bay, local official Trinh Dang Thanh says.

State-run media say Zuckerberg arrived in Vietnam on Dec. 22.

Zuckerberg spent Christmas Day at an ecolodge in the northern mountain town of Sapa and rode a buffalo, said Le Phuc Thien, deputy manager at Topas Ecolodge.

Zuckerberg, Facebook's 27-year-old CEO, founded the social networking site in 2004.

Vietnam's aggressive Internet censors block access to Facebook and other websites, but young Vietnamese easily bypass the restrictions.

I'm Back?

It's extremely likely that none of you remember who I am, since I only had two posts on this account. My lost account had only one. However, I'm here to say that after months of contemplation, I'm back and I think I'm fully and creatively prepared to contribute to roleplays. I'm very pleased to be back, because I remember this community to be creative and friendly, especially after clicking around and looking through the forums. I don't know if I'll receive very many hits, but I think I'll begin crafting some applications soon.

Just a little background on me before I let myself get distracted by filling up my head with notions of being creative just yet. I'm attending school to be a graphic designer (hopefully, layout design- you could say it's a passion of mine). At the moment, I'm attending a trade school and will soon be entering college for such studies. I've been roleplaying all sorts of things since I was but a boy of 7: fantasy, sci-fi, romance, comedy- you name it. I enjoy reading about the occult and the history of witchcraft due to some personal ties with the subject. My favourite genres to roleplay in are comedy, action, horror and fantasy.

My hobbies include writing and performing music, drawing, writing, reading and, of course, playing video games. If you feel like you want to get to know me better or even just say hello, I'm always open to PM's.

Sorry all that was so long-winded, but it's just some info I wanted to get out before starting to participate a little more. I hate being a stranger.

PS: In roleplays, I give you back what you give me. For example, if you give me a one-liner, I'm not going to give you a paragraph.

Tl;dr: I love roleplay, so I'm coming back to where I know is friendly. :D

Apple iPad 3 might be launched on Steve Jobs' birthday

1. Droid_X_Doug posted on 2 hours ago 0 1

That is a bit of a stretch. Maybe a 1Q2012 launch, but February 24th? Sounds like someone is needing to find ways to fill their day....

2. Droid_X_Doug posted on 2 hours ago 0 0

And further, what is the Economic Times' track record with iPad rumors they publish being correct?

3. SoMuchBetter posted on 1 hour ago 1 1

Wow can't wait- to my eyes the ipad is the only true tablet everything tablet made and is running on android kinda SUCKS. Maybe oneday the android community can build a competitive tablet but non as of now.

i like android phones better than iphones..but i have to agree on this one.. apple make the best tablet ...not spec wise but the apps ...the android app for phones are awsome but not so sure for tablets

Without meaning to sound cold hearted in any way, the pace at which Apple has been moving the iPad3 has a better chance to be launched on the anniversary of his death next year as opposed to his Birthday. I truly hope for Apple loyalists that the last 18 months or so have been just a bump in the road. I do not think that anything they did on the iPad 2 or the iPhone 4S was groundbreaking or risky. This company can easily just sit back and enjoy a very profitable 2012 without doing much of anything. But it would be great to see them kick it up a notch and truly attack the mobile industry with cutting edge tech in a totally revamped iPad3 and a iPhone 5. We know they have it in them.

Isn't the the Kindle Fire out selling the iPad? Hold on isn't that competitive? It's competitively beating the iPad... I give it a year before Apple can not compete with Android. Like it is now with monthly to yearly phone sales. There is no way a single product can compete with an OS. Sorry Apple it's just a matter of time and that time stared this holiday season.

"The iPad 2 also moved a million units in its first week, but Apple had trouble meeting demand after that. The original iPad sold well, but not anywhere near this rate. The tablet is selling at a rate of a million units a week. Even more impressively, they have managed to meet all of that demand, letting consumers purchase it without wait throughout the holiday shopping season." - phonearena.com

Apple can't say that. What was that about competitive? Just because you bought an Apple product doesn't mean that Android can't compete. The truth is it's just a matter of time before Apple can't compete with Android and is competing with Windows tablets... lol

7. thebikerboi2 posted on 45 min ago 2 0

the fact of the matter is dude is that apple has sold millions more tablets than any other manufacturer, and thaey hold the biggest tablet marketshare, the current succes of the kindle fire will probably level out and it may still be not as big as the ipad. the only reson that android has a bigger marketshare in the smartphone sector is that there are over 200 diferent android smartphones in the on the market, therefore more people are likely to pick an android phone over something like a windows, blackberry or symbian phone. and if you look at the statistics you probably will find that most of the android powered handsets sold are mid level smartphones.

8. tacohunter posted on 43 min ago 0 0

Y i don't really care about sale numbers. But the kindle fire is kinda new to the market while the ipad 2 is from march launch.

Competition is needed. Small difference apple wants iOS only on apple devices. Google wants android on all most every tablets and smartphones. Thank god not every company wants that. Good that their is wp, symbian and bb also to compete.

Congo opposition leader holds own inauguration (AP)

KINSHASA, Congo ? Congo's opposition leader held a private ceremony inaugurating himself president Friday after police prevented him and his supporters from gathering publicly, a spokesman said, a move that comes three days after the president was sworn in for a second term.

Police fired tear gas Friday at supporters of Etienne Tshisekedi as they attempted to reach Kinshasa's Martyrs' Stadium. Police also gathered near the home of the 79-year-old opposition leader, prompting him to hold the ceremony Friday afternoon in the company of about a dozen colleagues, said party spokesman Jean Marie Vianey Kabukanyi.

President Joseph Kabila was sworn in earlier in the week after he was announced the official winner of the November poll.

Observers fear Tshisekedi's move could spark more election-related violence in the mineral-rich central African nation. Police inspector general Charles Bisengimana said the situation was calm in Kinshasa on Friday.

About 1,000 Tshisekedi supporters of gathered near the stadium Friday morning. Several tanks waited nearby.

Hours after the event was scheduled to begin, Kabukanyi said Tshisekedi was still at home and was consulting with colleagues on his next move.

"Etienne Tshisekedi is well at his home in Limete" neighborhood, Kabukanyi said.

Tshisekedi earlier declared himself the winner of the election that international and local observers say lacked credibility, defying Kabila who results said had 49 percent of the vote, compared to 32 percent for Tshisekedi.

Kabila came to power after his father's assassination and has led Congo for a decade. His father, Laurent Kabila, was a rebel leader who toppled the country's dictator of 32 years, Mobutu Sese Seko, in 1997.

Joseph Kabila was declared the winner following constitutional reforms he pushed through parliament limiting the election to one round. Under the old rules, any winner had to have more than 50 percent of votes.

Human Rights Watch said Wednesday that security forces have killed at least 24 people and detained dozens in attacks to quell dissent over the much-criticized vote.

Tshisekedi last month ordered his followers to stage jailbreaks to free detained colleagues.

Observers fear unrest if Tshisekedi, who is enormously popular with the country's impoverished masses, orders his supporters to take to the streets.

The November election was only the second democratic vote in Congo's 51-year history, and the first to be organized by the Congolese government rather than by the international community.

Congo, which is sub-Saharan Africa's largest country, has suffered decades of dictatorship and civil war. The country's east is still wracked by violence perpetrated by dozens of militia and rebel groups.

Colbert offering $500K to pay for SC GOP primary (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Comedian Stephen Colbert is offering to pay half a million dollars to help subsidize South Carolina's first-in-the-South GOP presidential primary, as state officials struggle to pay for it, but there's doubt whether it would even be legal.

The Charleston native wrote in an op-ed Thursday in The State newspaper in Columbia that Colbert Super PAC ? a type of political action committee that allows him to raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals ? will bridge the gap after state Republicans refused to contribute anything above $180,000 collected in candidates' filing fees.

The state Election Commission, which administers South Carolina's voting, has said it has $1 million on hand for the primary but is short of the total $1.5 million price tag. Spokesman Chris Whitmire says the Commission has notified budget officials the state may need to seek permission to run a deficit to fund the primary.

Colbert wrote that he offered make up that $500,000 funding gap after state Republicans ultimately turned down his proposal to pay them $400,000 if they'd name the contest after him. Party officials have confirmed meeting with Colbert earlier this year to discuss a deal that would have renamed the balloting "The Colbert Super PAC South Carolina Republican Primary" in exchange for a check from the comedian.

Colbert, who plays a mock conservative pundit on his TV show "The Colbert Report," says he also wanted to put a question about "corporate personhood" on the January ballot. He seized on the issue after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling eased restrictions on campaign spending by corporations.

Ultimately rebuffed by the GOP, Colbert says he started working with Democrats to get the issue on the ballot, but state Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian said Thursday that effort also fell through.

State GOP executive director Matt Moore said party officials were skeptical of Colbert from the beginning but entertained his early communications before turning him down.

"Despite our repeatedly saying `no,' Stephen Colbert, the comedian, seems intent on being involved," Moore said. "It's exactly why we were wary in the first place."

Regardless of the party's position, it would be up to the state whether to accept or reject any offer.

Whitmire said the question of whether a PAC can fund a South Carolina primary is a new one. If the Election Commission were presented with the money and decided to accept it, he said, they would have to ask state Attorney General Alan Wilson to decide if state law permits a political action committee to fund a primary.

Colbert, who did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment, wrote that he will be spending the holidays in his native state and is open to discussions.

"The counties need the money, and Colbert Super PAC wants to give it to you; call it a Christmas Miracle," he wrote. "I'm going to be home in South Carolina over the holidays, so just give me a call. Both state parties have my contact info."

Romney says he would deport Obama's uncle (AP)

ASHLAND, N.H. ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says he would deport President Barack Obama's uncle, who police say was arrested in August for drunk driving near Boston and is an illegal immigrant.

In an interview with Boston radio host Howie Carr on Wednesday, Romney said "yes" when asked if Onyango Obama should be deported. Romney at first did not recognize the name, but said the nation's immigration laws should be enforced.

Onyango Obama is the 67-year-old half-brother of the president's late father. His case is pending in Framingham, Mass., District Court. He was initially held without bail on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on allegations he violated an order to return Kenya issued 20 years ago but has since been released.

Community Raises $87,000 To Help Provide Mammograms

VINTON, Iowa- It?s been more than five months since strong winds ripped through the town of Vinton, and left millions of dollars in damage behind.

Despite the physical and financial dent it put on the community, people living there still haven?t stopped giving. People in Vinton, Van Horne, Urbana and other surrounding areas have raised thousands of dollars to help provide mammograms for women.

?I?ve always thought it was a great place to live and this just confirms that fact,? said Mike Timmermans, The Foundation Director at Virginia Gay Hospital, in Vinton.

The hospital had never had a mammography device, despite a demand in the community. ?We are hoping to make mammograms more accessible to the women in the area,? said Michele Schoonover, the hospital?s Director of General Services.

With money from their annual Tree of Lights fundraiser, the Hospital purchased the $500,000 dollar machine. But they still had to renovate the room and pay for staff training. That?s when they called on their community, and got a big response. ?We were expecting around $50,000 from the community and they served past our wildest dreams,? said Schoonover.

Fundraising efforts started back in January and quickly caught on. The people of Benton County pitched in $87,000 so people in their community can be easily screened for breast cancer.

?I just think it?s great that people don?t have to travel for their mammography needs, they can do it in house,? said Timmermans.

The new unit is fully digital, it can identify the fingerprints of staff members who use it, and is accessible for those in wheelchairs. But most importantly, it can help save lives.

?People are surprising, they?ve really stepped up and we couldn?t be more grateful. It?s our chance to give back to the community and it makes you proud,? said Timmermans.

The hospital plans to start offering screenings twice a week starting at the end of January.

Libyan students in US worry about returning home (AP)

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? More than two years ago, Faeirouz Elbergwa was among a select group of Libyans sent by her government to an American university to train for the nation's diplomatic corps. As she prepares for the final stage of her studies, she and her colleagues now find themselves in an odd state of limbo ? a vestige of a regime that no longer exists and unsure what might await them in their much-changed homeland.

Elbergwa, 27, and 18 colleagues in a Libyan diplomatic training program at Michigan State University watched in amazement during the last year as the North African nation was convulsed by a violent revolution that ended with the overthrow and death of leader Moammar Gadhafi.

When the regime fell, many of the students were elated. Elbergwa said she and her family "took the side of the revolution from day one." But she wonders if people in her war-torn country will think of her as a would-be Gadhafi government official when it's time for her to return.

"Maybe some of them will say I'm loyal to this family," she said. "I think I don't care. It's what's in my heart that counts."

Student Mohammed Gibril also wonders about his future in Libya. "I might return home and nothing happens; I might return home and something happens," he said.

As Libya's new leaders struggle to establish order in the country, the students on the campus 5,000 miles away are trying to puzzle out their future with the help of relatives at home and authorities in the United States.

The State Department has approved the necessary visas for them to stay in the United States, and they intend to continue with their program, which will resume next month on the campus of American University in Washington, D.C. If they appear to be in danger when it's time to return to Libya later next year, the U.S. could consider granting asylum.

"The perception is just because these folks received the scholarship from the Gadhafi family they are somehow aligned ... with the Gadhafi family," said Eugenia Zacks-Carney, an immigration attorney who has been working with the Libyans at Michigan State. "Nothing could be further from the truth."

Michigan State launched the program in 2010 under a contract with Libya's National Economic Development Board to provide training in English, political science and international relations for future foreign service officials. Elbergwa, who describes her family as middle-class, was working toward a master's degree in international relations in Benghazi when she entered the program. She said that for those interested in public service in Libya, there was no alternative to dealing with the Gadhafi regime.

"Everything in the country was controlled by their family. ... We liked to call Libya `Gadhafi's farm,'" said Elbergwa, speaking in fluent English. "We lived by it. Somehow we accepted it for a long time."

When the uprising began in February, she said, her two brothers joined the fight and her father began driving an ambulance. She was heartbroken at first, seeing the broadcast images of suffering and mayhem, but then she joined anti-Gadhafi protests on campus.

Gibril also was torn. "I don't like seeing people being killed, but I was happy to see what he represented die," said Gibril, who has worked in the human rights field. "I wanted him to face justice."

About 20 students in the program, including those loyal to the Gadhafi regime, decided to return home when NATO forces began attacking government targets, but the others stayed on.

Hamza El-Najah, 28, another student in the program, said it's not clear now when stability will come to the nation.

"As the world knows, they don't have freedom for more than 42 years," said El-Najah, whose family owns a jewelry store in a town about 60 miles south of Tripoli. "Right now, they get freedom. What do you think ? use this freedom in the right way or the wrong way?"

Gibril said he would like to return home after the program ends later this year.

One concern is the dozens of militias that rose up during the war and now are reluctant to disband or submit to central authority. Also, there are still Gadhafi loyalists.

"I know there are still people killing in his name," said Elbergwa, whose father resigned from the Libyan Army two years after Gadhafi came to power in 1969.

Sipping coffee in an off-campus cafe, Elbergwa, dressed in a casual sweater and multihued headscarf, said the overthrow of Gadhafi leaves a country with "nothing" ? no infrastructure, education, health care or political culture. With a huge rebuilding process ahead, she said, she hopes her nation will accept her help.

When he returns after his diplomatic training, El-Najah said he will carry a simple message.

"We have to forgive each other," he said. "I will tell them: You should forgive if you want to build Libya."

Nintendo and the Louvre partner for 3DS-enhanced tours (Digital Trends)

Le_Louvre

As reported earlier by the?Agence France-Presse news agency, the most popular museum in the world is teaming up with Nintendo to bring 3DS handheld gaming devices to patrons of the Louvre. Nintendo is supplying the museum with 5,000 3DS devices in order to replace?traditional audio-guides by March 2012. While the Paris museum has about 8.5 million annual visitors come through the doors, only four percent utilize the current audio hardware offered by the museum for tours at a cost of approximately six euros ($7.81). The?museum?s head of multimedia believes that the majority of people will be?happier using a touch screen rather than figure out how to work the audio guide.?

3ds-louvreWhile visitors that rent the Nintendo 3DS will likely pay a higher fee for the device, users will be able to see a visual representation of their location within the Louvre and choose from several?themed itineraries, some of which have been targeted at children. The museum also plans to include?hundreds of audio commentaries about the exhibits and record the audio selections in seven different languages. The video screens will likely be used to show current and upcoming exhibits in addition to recorded presentations. While Nintendo is developing all the content for the supplied 3DS devices, the?Louvre has final editorial control on the application.

The Louvre also has smartphone and iPad applications available to download and use during a tour of the Louvre. The application allows museum visitors to share exhibits they are currently viewing on Facebook as well as read more in-depth information about each piece. While the iPhone version of the application is currently free, the iPad version comes with more high resolution photos and is a premium app purchase. Both versions of the application require at least 800MB and users are encouraged to download the application before visiting the museum.

Anti-suicide app aims to help soldiers (Reuters)

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) ? U.S. soldiers facing emotional problems and contemplating suicide may soon be able to use a smart phone application to connect them to help.

The Tennessee National Guard, the state's reserve military force, launched a pilot program of the "Guard Your Buddy" app that was spearheaded by Clark Flatt, president and CEO of the Jason Foundation.

Major General Terry "Max" Haston, the commander of the Tennessee National Guard, approached Flatt, who launched the app in October 1997 after his teenage son Jason committed suicide, about using the app for his soldiers.

Flatt said suicides in the National Guard have risen 450 percent since 2004. He and Haston hope to spread the app nationwide in National Guard units.

"We hope soldiers will download this smart phone application and pass it on to their fellow troops to ensure they have someone to talk to in times of trouble," Haston said. "It's difficult to predict if or when a member of our guard family will face suicidal thoughts, but we want them to be able to get help if they need it."

The National Guard Bureau's suicide prevention program shows that 362 National Guard members nationwide committed suicide since 2007, and another 23 cases are under investigation.

Haston convinced Flatt that the Jason Foundation's goal of addressing youth suicide also applies to the National Guard.

"A lot of the people we're talking about as having these issues are young guardsmen, 18-24 years old," Flatt said. "We found a lot of problems were (about) relationships and finance."

SUBSTANCE-ABUSE ISSUES

Tennessee National Guard Command Sergeant Major Terry Scott, who works in family support, said substance-abuse issues are also contributing factors to suicide.

The Guard Your Buddy app has received positive reviews.

"I think it's going to assist us in a great way. We have a lot of young soldiers in the 17-25 range and that's where our highest rate of suicide is," said Scott. "Being an electronic device, it is what they are in tune with."

Flatt said the high-tech tool provides soldiers the immediacy that could save a life.

"What we came up with is a Guard Your Buddy app for your smart phone and a mobile web site that contains all the links, the places somebody can go as to how to help a friend, talk to a friend," he said.

The smart phone has a "Talk Now" button that instantly connects soldiers to "a master's-level clinician or above who can connect you to life services."

"You don't talk to an operator," said Flatt. "The confidentiality is very high."

He said his foundation, the guard and E4, a Dallas-based national employee assistance company that provides the clinicians, worked on the program.

The app is based around a simple fact of life in the guard.

"They have a battle buddy code of honor: Take care of your buddy," said Flatt. "If you see your buddy and there are some warning signs, then use this app and get help."

Flatt said beginning January 1, all Tennessee National Guardsmen must have a card with the web site and app information on it.

"It is important to find ways to help today's troops and the Guard Your Buddy app will give them access to round-the-clock resources," said Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam (Editing by Jerry Norton and Patricia Reaney; For the latest Reuters lifestyle news see: http://www.reuters.com/news/lifestyle))

Shutup, Twitter Isn't Censoring Your Dumb Trends [Twitter]

So brilliant writer and Iraq War apologist Christopher Hitchens died last night. Almost immediately, #GodIsNotGreat started trending on Twitter. It's the title of one of Hitchens' books, of course, but it made a lot of people angry. More »

Atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens dead at 62 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.

"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.

A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.

The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.

Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."

The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.

'CANCER ELITE'

"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.

In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."

The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.

"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Hitchens is survived by his wife, Carol Blue; their daughter, Antonia; and his children from a previous marriage, Alexander and Sophia, Vanity Fair said.

In his last essay on www.vanityfair.com, dated "January 2012," Hitchens said his illness made him question the saying attributed to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche that "Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger."

A painkiller injection just before typing the article titled "Trial of the Will," Hitchens wrote, caused "numbness in the extremities, filling me with the not irrational fear that I shall lose the ability to write. Without that ability, I feel sure in advance, my 'will to live' would be hugely attenuated."

Reese Witherspoon to star in West Memphis 3 movie (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Reese Witherspoon will star in "Devil's Knot," Atom Egoyan's movie about the West Memphis Three, one of the film's producers told TheWrap on Thursday.

The Weinstein Co.'s Dimension Films has been developing the "Devil's Knot" project for years. The West Memphis Three were also the subjects of a three-part HBO documentary, "Paradise Lost."

In the new film, Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of three 8-year-old boys who were brutally murdered in West Memphis, Ark., in May 1993.

Hobbs had been among those who accused Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin of committing the infamous murders. In November 2007, she said new evidence had changed her mind.

"Did I really believe it, no, not 100 percent that they did it," she told Jonesboro, Ark.-based KAIT-TV. "I didn't believe they were capable enough or smart enough to have committed the crime, cleaned the scene up and be guilty for it."

After spending 17 years in prison, Echols, Misskelley and Baldwin were released from prison in August as part of a plea deal.

Over the years, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and other prominent musicians had raised money in support of the West Memphis Three, who had maintained their innocence all along.

Dimension acquired the rights to journalist Mara Leveritt's book "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three" in 2006, and hired Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman to write the script.

Richard Saperstein, Elizabeth Fowler, Boardman and Clark Peterson will produce Dimension's movie.

Safety Management Issues Led to 2010 Gulf Oil Spill: Report

Image: US Coast Guard

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. offshore oil and gas drillers need to take a more systematic approach to safety in all aspects of their operations to prevent another catastrophe like last year's massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill, a scientific panel said on Wednesday.

The National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council said in a report that it was a lack of comprehensive safety management that led to the 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers.

The rig explosion also ruptured BP's underwater Macondo well, unleashing more than 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf.

Improvements in safety culture have been made since the spill, but the panel said these changes by industry and regulators need to be made permanent to guard against complacency.

"We believe there is a lot of value in establishing a safety culture that institutionalizes much of the additional attention that is being afforded right now," Donald Winter, a former secretary of the Navy who chaired the panel that authored the report, told reporters on a press call.

The report, commissioned by the Interior Department, builds on an assessment released by the panel last year that blamed the Gulf spill on a series of mistakes by BP and its contractors.

In addition to calling for systematic safety management, the panel also said rig blowout preventers, the fail-safe equipment that did not function properly in the Macondo spill, should be redesigned in light of last year's disaster.

At the time of the spill the industry had a "misplaced confidence that BOPs could provide a guarantee against a blowout," Winter said.

The blowout preventer had been touted as a last line of defense against a major spill by sealing a well in the event of a blowout, but the Deepwater Horizon's blowout preventer failed to shut in the well.

Regulators also failed to properly assess the risks associated with the Macondo well, the panel said.

Going forward, the panel recommended that the government consolidate safety oversight of offshore drilling in one agency and move toward a more goal-oriented safety regime.

The panel applauded the Interior Department for finalizing a worker safety rule that took a more goal-oriented approach by requiring companies to demonstrate that their operations will meet benchmarks related to health, safety and environmental protection.

The panel said the rule is a good "first step" to reforming the current regulatory system, which focuses more on dictating the way companies should drill. Critics say this more "prescriptive" system is not dynamic enough to keep pace with fast-changing industry operations.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the report validates the work his agency has done to overhaul offshore drilling regulation since the spill.

"The work we have done to implement rigorous new offshore drilling and safety rules and reform offshore regulation and oversight is in line with the recommendations of the Committee and with our goals moving forward," Salazar said in a statement.

State: Mom who shot kids, self denied food stamps (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? A Texas woman who for months was unable to qualify for food stamps pulled a gun in a state welfare office and staged a seven-hour standoff with police that ended with her shooting her two children before killing herself, officials said Tuesday.

The children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, remained in critical condition Tuesday. The shooting took place at a Texas Department of Health and Human Services building in Laredo, where police said about 25 people were inside at the time.

Authorities identified the mother as Rachelle Grimmer, 38, and children Ramie and Timothy. Laredo police investigator Joe Baeza said Grimmer had recently moved to the border city from Zanesville, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Columbus.

Grimmer first applied for food stamps in July but was denied because she didn't turn in enough information, Texas Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said.

Goodman didn't know what Grimmer specifically failed to provide. In addition to completing an 18-page application, families seeking state benefits also must provide documents proving their information, such as proof of employment and residency.

"We were still waiting, and if we had that, I don't know if she would still qualify or not," Goodman said.

Goodman said Grimmer's last contact with the agency appeared to be a phone call in mid-November. When the family entered the Laredo office on Monday shortly before 5 p.m., Goodman said Grimmer asked to speak to a new caseworker, and not the one whom she worked with previously.

Shortly thereafter, Goodman said, Grimmer was taken to a private room to discuss her case. She said it was there the mother revealed a gun and the standoff began.

Police negotiators stayed on the phone with Grimmer throughout the evening, but she kept hanging up, Baeza said. She allegedly told negotiators about a litany of complaints against state and federal government agencies.

Despite those complaints, Baeza said it wasn't clear what specifically triggered the standoff.

"This wasn't like a knee-jerk reaction," said Baeza, adding that Grimmer felt she was owed restitution of some sort.

Grimmer let a supervisor go unharmed around 7:45, but stayed inside the office with her children. After hanging up the phone around 11:45, police heard three shots, and a SWAT team entered the building. Inside, they found Grimmer's body and her two wounded children.

The children were "very critical" and unconscious when taken from the scene, Baeza said.

Multiple family members in Ohio and Missouri did not immediately return phone messages Tuesday. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said the agency had no information on Grimmer.

A YouTube channel the family appeared to have created in 2009 includes a profile that reads, "We are Shell, Ramie and Tim. Mom, daughter 10 and son 8. We like turtles, horses, and being outside. The kids have two turtles, an alligator snapper and a red eared slider. We work on naturalizing them and try to give them the most natural setting possible."

There are no videos uploaded. Tagged as favorites are an eclectic mix of nearly two dozen videos, ranging from a solar panel installation to a live clip of the band of AC/DC. The "Hometown" category reads: "We don't have one."

Goodman credited an office supervisor, a 24-year veteran of the agency, for ensuring the release of the other employees.

"He had told her he would try to help her, and that if she would let everyone else leave, he would talk to her," Goodman said.

Goodman didn't know whether Grimmer had a job, or whether her children were covered under Medicaid or the state children's health insurance program. The family had no history with the Texas Department of Child Protective Services.

The family's move from Ohio may have complicated Grimmer's application if the family had no Texas records the agency could check electronically, Goodman said. Grimmer also would have been denied benefits if she was receiving welfare assistance.

Grimmer also appeared to fall out of touch during her pursuit of food stamps. The mother originally applied July 7, but Goodman said Grimmer missed her first interview and didn't call back and reschedule for a few weeks. Her case was closed Aug. 8 for lack of a full application, Goodman said.

How much food stamp money a family receives depends on their income level. The average family on food stamps in Texas receives $294 a month.

Three months later, Grimmer called the agency's ombudsman Nov. 16 and requested a review of how her rejected case was handled. Goodman said the agency found that caseworkers acted appropriately after looking over Grimmer's file, and a supervisor called Grimmer's cell phone last Thursday to tell her the outcome. No one answered and the phone's voicemail box was full, Goodman said.

"The indications she had she was dealing with a lot of issues," Goodman said.

State welfare offices have come under scrutiny in the past for being overburdened, but Goodman said the agency has made significant strides in the past three years. She said wait times are shorter, and that Grimmer was scheduled for her initial interview just one day after applying. Grimmer didn't make the appointment, she said.

Goodman said it's not unusual for caseworkers to confront angry or confused benefit-seekers, but that it's very rare for a situation to escalate to violence.

Mountain Day at the Durban Climate Change Conference May Not Lead to Changes (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Today has been declared Mountain Day at the Durban Climate Change conference in South Africa. The United Nations Conference of the Parties will allow researchers from the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development to present their findings about the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. Although the media is portraying the publication of its results as a monumental event, ICIMOD has previously noted that a full report may only be seen in 2013.

New Data

The International Center for Integrated Mountain Development has found disturbing data on the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. Despite gaps in information and the need for more extensive studies, ICIMOD has already found that there is an ongoing reduction in mass in the glaciers. The loss of glaciers can lead to flooding in some areas and a reduction of a water supply in others. The focus on climate change is at the heart of the ICIMOD research.

Unfortunately, the reports from the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development also illustrate an ongoing problem in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region that needs to be addressed immediately. The enormous gaps in data are disturbing, and I am shocked to see the minimal amount of research that has been devoted to this area. Although ICIMOD has highlighted the organization's hopes of ongoing studies and more data, funding is limited, and it is not certain how this will be accomplished.

Impact

It is difficult to assess the full impact of the ICIMOD research on the United Nations climate talks. The findings from the organization are being presented today and have essentially been relegated to the outskirts of the United Nations Conference of the Parties. I do not think the reports will have a strong influence on the climate talks because they have not been given an adequate audience.

The Kyoto Protocol is still at the center of the COP17, and the glaciers of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region are not going to remove the focus from the debate. Although this region may hold the answers to understanding global climate change, the Conference of the Parties will probably overlook most of its limited data while politics continue to reign.
