Deletion of online critiques draws 'censorship' cries

By Bob Sullivan

The First Amendment allows American citizens to say almost anything without fear of being thrown in jail by the government. The free speech it guarantees does not, however, mean your comments are protected from being thrown off a website.?

Still, those who ?censor? consumers online quickly draw the full ire of the Web. Two years ago, when Apple launched its iPhone 4 and was caught deleting threads on its own website about a critical Consumer Reports review, the Internet's revenge was swift and brutal.?

Social media complicates the issue, as nearly all major brands have thriving interactions with consumers on Facebook and Twitter, inviting potential swarms of negative comments. Deleting such comments on third-party social media sites is a big Internet faux pas, so most companies use the language of free speech when they discuss social media, claiming they permit open discussions.? But experts say some firms do try to stuff the genie back in the bottle, quietly erasing negative comments, trying to buck Internet culture and hoping they don't get caught.

Two recent high-profile incidents of alleged "censorship" -- which both companies deny --- demonstrate the quandary companies are in, and how suspicious consumers are.

When United Airlines "lost" a 10-year-old traveling to summer camp, its Facebook page was deluged with negative commentary.? The airline was accused of deleting some comments, but it told NBC News that it doesn?t censor its page, and only removes comments that violate its terms. Around the same time, Wal-Mart deleted comments from a man who said his wife was mugged outside a store in Oakland, but Wal-Mart officials tell NBC the comments were deleted in error, and that the firm doesn't remove negative comments.

A glance at both firms' Facebook pages proves they certainly permit negative commentary there, and that consumers have quite a knack for writing it.

There is general agreement from all sides that, when it comes to social media, firms shouldn't delete negative comments about themselves and should generally act as if the First Amendment applies.? Developing that stiff an upper lip is easier said than done, however, says David Armano, social media expert at public relations giant Edelman Worldwide.? And consumers who suspect some negative comments are getting vaporized by companies aren?t necessarily off base.

"(Deletion) is definitely more common than you think," he said. "I'm not going to throw names out there, but many of our clients grapple with it. Some of them have deleted comments against what we advise."

Many organizations still haven't made the psychological leap from websites to social media, he said. Despite Apple's bulletin board woes, there is a gray area when companies choose to control what appears on their own dot.com. But erasing comments from Facebook is universally seen as a no-no by users, he said.

"A lot of organizations just really don?t understand the difference between these new social channels and what they knew as digital a few years ago until they learn the hard way," he said.? "The most common knee-jerk reaction is, 'This is our property, so we can delete.' There is a temptation to do so unless you really have been in social for a while."

Deleting comments and getting caught can be a nightmare -- and that nightmare is only one screen shot away.

Thomas Hawk thought he caught Wal-Mart deleting his comments after his wife allegedly was mugged in the parking lot of the chain's Oakland store Aug. 19.?

"Apparently, it took over 15 minutes for anyone from the Wal-Mart store to get involved and the manager did not want to call the police," he wrote. A screen grab showed his initial post on Wal-Mart?s page, and a subsequent grab documented its removal.? A second post complaining about the removal was also deleted, but that hardly ended the incident. Hawk's personal blog entry about the deletions went viral, and eventually landed on Reddit.

"I'm pretty unsatisfied actually at their response to the whole situation," Hawk told NBC News.

Wal-Mart said its policy is not to delete negative comments and that Hawk's comments were deleted erroneously by its third-party social media monitoring company. His initial comment was removed because the word "assault" triggered a profanity filter (it included the word "ass"), a company spokesperson said; his second comment was removed because it contained a hyperlink, against the firm's terms of use.

After workers noticed the error, the company reposted Hawk's initial comment two days later and apologized.

?We conducted an internal review and found that it was a system error that flagged your post as containing profanity,? the apology read. ?It should not have been deleted. It is not our policy to delete a post like yours. We are reposting your original post below. Of course, we always want to improve safety and have shared this situation with those responsible within the Wal-Mart team.?

The incident shows how prickly Internet users are about comment deletion -- there was far more discussion of the alleged censorship than of the alleged mugging.

The great risk from deletion, as shown in the Wal-Mart case, is that it often backfires.? Attempting to erase criticism often magnifies it, drawing extra attention to a consumer's comment that might otherwise have been ignored, or throwing gasoline on a fire that's just begun to burn.

"I think a lot of brands have learned the hard way that people will grab screen shots. Once it's on the ?Net, it's there forever," said Carri Bugbee, founder of Portland-based social media consultant firm Big Deal PR. ?Deleting comments can get messy too, she said. Those who respond to the initial comment might also be removed, and inevitably, an awkward ?why did you delete that?? thread gets started.

United Airlines was accused of deleting comments in the wake of the "lost" 10-year-old incident, but it flatly denied the accusation to NBC News.?

Around the same time, United passenger Sarah Liddle told NBC News that her comments were deleted from United's Facebook page after she complained about poor service.

?United pulled my entire post from their page. No response from them, nothing inappropriate in my post and nothing offensive, (and they) didn't inform me why they removed it from their page," she said. "They just pulled the post. I was furious and still am."

Liddle did not have a screen shot of her post because, she said, she didn't expect to need one.

United spokesman Joe Micucci said he couldn't comment on Liddle's post, because he hadn?t seen it, but repeated the firm's non-censorship policy.

"We do not delete comments unless they contain profanity, are hostile in nature or mention an employee?s name in full," he said.

Liddle said her post did include the name of an airline employee, potentially explaining its removal. But both Liddle and Hawk said they were annoyed that they weren't notified when their posts were removed. Doing so would be tricky and time-consuming for companies, but a simple "your post violated our terms" notice might head off accusations of censorship, and any subsequent social media firestorms that might ensue.

Armano, the Edelman social media expert, said companies need to clearly and conspicuously post their comment terms so consumers know where they stand before they post.

"We recommend (they) have clear moderation policy that sets your terms, so it?s accepted that if there?s hate speech it will be removed, and it?s clear what else is unacceptable,? he said.?

But even with that in place, critical decisions that could lead to PR disasters too often are made by junior employees, Bugbee said.

"A lot of this stuff gets delegated to people who don't have crisis management experience, who don?t understand the implications," she said. "Hopefully people know better than to delegate this stuff to interns ... but it?s soft skills that are more important. Any 14-year-old can learn how to use Facebook, but the soft skills of having judgment, knowing how to respond, that's what matters. So companies have to train their people well."

A clear chain of crisis command is also critical, she said.

?I don't think most people have that. If something happens, who is the final arbiter? I tell clients, ?Mr. VP, I need your cell phone, and I may call you any night, any weekend,?? she said.

Armano uses a unique metaphor to help companies wrap their heads around the kinds of issues they'll face on Facebook and Twitter.? He compares social media hangouts to embassies and says companies should act like respectful foreign diplomats on embassy soil.

"These are like social embassies. They are like a piece of land in another country; maybe you control the grounds, but what happens just outside the embassy you have no control over," he said, adding that ??trying to control the discussion or the protests there is "just not worth it."

A Business Case for Adopting Social Networking | DCR Workforce ...

Mankind has always been ridiculed for inventing the machine first and becoming its slave later. The list is long? electricity, automobiles, locomotion, flying, telephone, television, computers, mobile phones, Wi-Fi ? not to forget refrigeration and air-conditioning! But the Internet transcends them all in the way it has grabbed the total attention of the homo sapiens ? social networking tops the list of favored online activities, be it from a PC, notebook, tablet or smartphone! Microsoft?s purchase of the Enterprise Social Networking platform Yammer, at $1.2 billion is an affirmation of the potential of social networking in today?s world.

Businesses are not lagging behind in taking advantage of this medium to reach out to their customers, using innovative marketing methods. Millions of companies are offering a 10% discount to anyone who takes the trouble to say ?I like? on their Facebook page! This is effective marketing as one can attract people who are already interested in becoming their customers by giving them the best incentive possible to come over and buy that product. ?Companies who already have a social marketing strategy as well as those that have none so far are all looking at the possibilities and seeing how they can carve out their share of this virtual pie.

Blaming social networking for its negative impact on workplace productivity is out of vogue. Companies are forging ahead, using effective workplace policies to curb unwanted use of social networking and inappropriate contact between the personal and the professional while retaining the ability to use social networking for business purposes.

The importance of communication within? the team at a workplace can never be disputed, and social networking is outstripping the use of email by offering a window of opportunity for instantly and briefly communicating, and immediately resolving issues.

Employees with professional and technical skills are allowed to use social media even for personal use by some companies. While work places have varied mindsets on the matter, depending on whether they are Gen Y, Gen X or baby boomers? ? the opportunities for networking offered by social media ranges across different options:

  • Personal use. (Job hunting, networking, messaging, photo/video uploads, sharing common interests)
  • Use at the workplace. (Advertisement, Hiring, Marketing, networking and seeking vendors/suppliers)
  • Enable sharing of opinions and expertise; providing guidance to colleagues, friends or general public
  • Allow collaborative effort among the members of a team.

Social media ?hold-outs? may be jeopordizing the futures of their companies by not taking advantage of this essential approach to business.? Their competitors will have faster access to critical business and market information.? They are unable to tap into the increasing pool of technical and professional talent who exclusively use social media as a vehicle for identifying potential employers.? They deprive their clients of a convenient and fast way of communicating with them for purchases, customer service, and information regarding new products and services. And, their company?s institutional knowledge will continue to be bound by geographic constraints. Keeping employees and customers happy is also an essential requirement for any organization; and in today?s world, social networking is a way of life and is considered as important to life as breathing; with many who have never lived in a world without Internet and others who cannot imagine such an existence anymore!

(AP) ? The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, best known for conducting mass weddings involving thousands of couples, was a self-proclaimed messiah, but he was at least as good at attracting dollars as he was at drawing converts.

His Unification Church claims 3 million followers, though ex-members and critics put the number at no more than 100,000. There is no questioning the vastness of the business empire Moon created through his church: ventures in several countries from hospitals and newspapers to cars and sushi, and even professional sports teams and a ballet troupe.

Moon died Monday at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong County, northeast of Seoul, two weeks after being hospitalized with pneumonia, Unification Church spokesman Ahn Ho-yeul told The Associated Press. Moon's wife and children were at his side, Ahn said. He was 92.

Flags flew at half-staff Monday at a Unification Church in Seoul. Followers trickled into the building, some wiping away tears. One woman bowed and cried before a copy of the church-owned Segye Times newspaper, which was placed on a table and had a large picture of Moon on its front page. Another woman bowed before a small statue of Moon and his wife.

"I am devastated," Bo Hi Pak, chairman of the Unification Church-supported Korean Cultural Foundation, said Monday outside the hospital where Moon had been cared for. "I cannot control my emotions and focus on my work due to the sadness of losing a father."

Moon's body was transferred to the church's gargantuan white palace on Mount Cheonseong overlooking the lakes and wooded forests of Gapyeong County. His funeral will take place Sept. 15 after a 13-day mourning period, with a massive new sports and cultural center built recently on the church's sprawling campus accepting mourners starting Thursday, the church said in a statement. Moon is to be buried on Mount Cheonseong.

The mourning period is not only more than the usual three to five days in South Korea, but longer than the mourning periods for late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. It was in keeping with Moon's grandiose life, in which he encouraged followers to call him and his wife "True Parents."

Moon, who was born in a rural part of what is now North Korea, founded his Bible-based religion in Seoul in 1954, a year after the end of the Korean War. He cultivated friends among political leaders in the U.S. and ? though he was an ardent anti-communist ? in North Korea, though he served time in prison in both countries.

He gained notoriety by marrying off thousands of followers in mass wedding ceremonies, usually not long after being arranged to marry by Moon himself. Moon often paired up strangers hailing from different countries as part of his vision of a multicultural, family-oriented religious world.

The church has faced considerable controversy over the years, and has been accused of using devious recruitment tactics and duping followers out of money. Parents of young followers in the United States and elsewhere expressed worries that their children were brainwashed into joining.

The church rebuffs the allegations, saying many new religious movements faced similar accusations in their early years. Moon's followers were often called "Moonies," a term many found pejorative.

The Unification Church claims 3 million followers, including 100,000 in the U.S., and says it has sent missionaries to 194 countries, according to Ahn.

Richard Panzer, president of the Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, N.Y., said Moon's legacy will live on.

"We believe that Reverend Moon was a historical figure in the history of religion," he said. "And that he made an enormous contribution to understanding of the suffering heart of God and a lot of contributions toward world peace."

The seminary, established by Moon in 1975, is an interfaith institution with Buddhist, Christian and Muslim professors, Panzer said.

The church also quietly amassed lucrative business ventures over the years, including the Washington Times newspaper; the New Yorker Hotel, a midtown Manhattan art deco landmark; and a seafood distribution firm that supplies sushi to Japanese restaurants across the U.S. It gave the University of Bridgeport $110 million over more than a decade to keep the Connecticut school operating.

In South Korea, it acquired a ski resort, professional football teams, schools, hospitals and other businesses. It also operates the Potonggang Hotel in Pyongyang, jointly operates the North Korean automaker and has a huge "peace" institute in the North Korean capital.

Moon had hoped to help bring about the reunification of Korea during his lifetime.

Moon was born in 1920 in North Phyongan Province at a time when Pyongyang was known as a center for Korea's Christians. He said he was 16 when Jesus Christ first appeared to him and told him to finish the work he had begun on Earth 2,000 years earlier.

Christianity fell out of favor after the Korean Peninsula was divided into the communist North and the U.S.-backed South in 1945, and while preaching, Moon was imprisoned in the late 1940s by North Korean authorities and accused of spying for South Korea, an allegation he denied.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he went to South Korea. After leaving his North Korean wife, he married Hak Ja Han Moon in 1960.

In South Korea, Moon quickly drew young acolytes to his conservative, family-oriented value system and unusual interpretation of the Bible. The church's doctrine is a mixture of Christian, Confucian and traditional Korean values.

Moon conducted his first mass wedding in Seoul in the early 1960s, and the "blessing ceremonies" grew in scale over the years. A 1982 wedding at New York's Madison Square Garden ? the first outside South Korea ? drew thousands of participants.

"International and intercultural marriages are the quickest way to bring about an ideal world of peace," Moon said in a 2009 autobiography. "People should marry across national and cultural boundaries with people from countries they consider to be their enemies so that the world of peace can come that much more quickly."

Moon began rebuilding his relationship with North Korea in 1991, meeting with the country's founder, Kim Il Sung, in the eastern industrial city of Hamhung. In his autobiography, Moon said he urged Kim to give up his nuclear ambitions, and said Kim responded by saying that his atomic program was for peaceful purposes and he had no intention to use it to "kill my own people."

"The two of us were able to communicate well about our shared hobbies of hunting and fishing," Moon wrote. "At one point, we each felt we had so much to say to the other that we just started talking like old friends meeting after a long separation."

When Kim died in 1994, Moon sent a condolence delegation to North Korea, drawing criticism from conservatives at home. The late Kim Jong Il, who succeeded his father as North Korean leader, sent roses, prized wild ginseng, Rolex watches and other gifts to Moon on his birthday each year. Moon said Kim Il Sung had instructed Kim Jong Il that "after I die, if there are things to discuss pertaining to North-South relations, you must always seek the advice of President Moon."

The church also sent a delegation to Pyongyang after Kim Jong Il died in December and was succeeded by his son Kim Jong Un.

Moon also developed a good relationship with conservative American leaders such as former Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Yet he also served 13 months at a U.S. federal prison in the mid-1980s after a New York City jury convicted him of filing false tax returns. The church says the U.S. government persecuted Moon because of his growing influence and popularity with young Americans.

One of the more bizarre chapters in Moon's relationship with Washington came in 2004, when more than a dozen U.S. lawmakers attended a "coronation ceremony" for Moon and his wife in which Moon declared himself humanity's savior and said his teachings have helped Hitler and Stalin be "reborn as new persons." Some of the congressmen later said they had been misled and hadn't been aware that Moon would be at the event.

In later years, the church adopted a lower profile in the United States and focused on building its businesses. Moon lived for more than 30 years in the United States, the church said.

In recent years, Moon handed over day-to-day control of the empire to his children. In 2008, at age 88, he was in a helicopter crash near Seoul but suffered only minor injuries.

Still, in 2009 he presided over a wedding ceremony for 45,000 people marrying for the first time or renewing their vows ? one of his last huge mass weddings.

Moon and his wife have 10 surviving sons and daughters, according to the church.

There are reports of a rift within the family. One of Moon's sons reportedly sued his mother in 2011 demanding the return of more than $22 million allegedly sent without his consent from a company he runs to his mother's missionary group. A court ruled that the money was a loan but ordered it returned, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Another son committed suicide in 1999, plunging to his death from the 17th floor from a Reno, Nevada, hotel, officials said. Two other sons reportedly also died early, one in a train wreck and another in a car accident.

At the time of the car accident, the son was engaged to marry the prima ballerina daughter of Bo Hi Pak, the head of the church's Korean Cultural Foundation. The wedding, dubbed a "spiritual" marriage, went ahead as planned even after his death and the daughter-in-law, Julia Moon, is a prominent figure in South Korea's arts scene.

Moon's U.S.-born youngest son, the Rev. Hyung-jin Moon, was named the church's top religious director in April 2008. Other children run the church's businesses and charitable activities.

Hyung-jin Moon told The Associated Press in February 2010 that his father's offspring do not see themselves as his successors.

"Our role is not inheriting that messianic role," he said. "Our role is more of the apostles ... where we become the bridge between understanding what kind of lives (our) two parents have lived."

Europe's carmakers ready cuts to emulate Detroit

PARIS (Reuters) - Europe's volume carmakers are returning from summer breaks with their sleeves rolled up, ready to shut plants and lay off staff in what many see as an overdue push to cut costs as their U.S. counterparts did three years ago.

In 2009, when the United States rescued General Motors and Chrysler from bankruptcy on condition they close plants and slash jobs to rebuild profits, European governments responded to a slump in vehicle sales by offering car firms aid to do the opposite - maintain employment levels in the hope of a swift recovery.

Three years on, and with no sign of an end to a European economic crisis that has crushed demand for cars in core Mediterranean markets, French and Italian makers, along with GM's German Opel unit and Ford's regional division, face less resistance from politicians and labour unions as they present cuts as an alternative to risking outright collapse.

Governments, including the newly elected Socialists in Paris, no longer have funds to bail companies out, and some union leaders are calculating that cuts now can save more jobs later - though few expect workforces, which have in some cases already been substantially eroded, to take plant closures quietly.

But American auto consultant David Cole said he expected major restructuring to get under way as Europeans faced the choice to "sacrifice a battalion in order to save a division".

"Everybody has decided this is the right time to make structural changes," said Cole, a former head of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"When they see that a company could disappear with all its jobs, they may realise it's better to lose 20 percent."

Factory closures are no longer the "taboo subject" they were when the industry faced the first wave of crisis after 2008, said Laurent Petizon, a Paris-based director for consultancy AlixPartners, which advised GM on its state-aided turnaround.

"There seems to be a growing realization that overcapacity needs to be dealt with."

CONTRASTING FORTUNES

Three years after the drastic cuts demanded by U.S. President Barack Obama's administration in return for public cash, GM and Chrysler are reporting strong earnings, even with the U.S. market still below pre-crisis levels.

Global No.1 GM, which shed four brands, 14 U.S. plants and 21,000 jobs, posted a record profit of $7.6 billion last year, while Chrysler netted $183 million under new parent Fiat after a similar tightening of its belt.

In Europe, where the industry was barred from closing factories in return for billions in state loans, scrappage bonuses and other life support subsidies, most mass automakers now appear locked in a downward spiral.

PSA Peugeot Citroen , Renault and Fiat - along with Ford in Europe and GM's Opel - are struggling to stay profitable and in most cases failing.

Peugeot is leading the losses, and the charge, with plans to cut more than 10,000 French jobs and carry out the country's first car plant closure in two decades.

Fiat, which shuttered one Italian plant last year, has warned it will close another unless it can build vehicles competitively for U.S. export.

"We reserve the right to deal with these issues, including the issue of closing plants, after the third quarter," CEO Sergio Marchionne said last month.

Renault has been careful not to rule out cutting capacity. Four months before Peugeot's announcement, Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn had predicted that any significant restructuring move in Europe would "force all carmakers to do it".

GM may also order deeper cutbacks after ousting Opel chief Karl-Friedrich Stracke in July. Stracke had reached an outline union deal to extend a moratorium on firings until the likely closure of Opel's Bochum plant in 2017.

WORKFORCES SHRINK

The politics have not stymied all change. European governments have often "looked the other way" as companies have shrunk plants and headcount by attrition, said Ron Harbour, a managing partner with consulting firm Oliver Wyman.

Renault's French headcount fell 9.6 percent in the three years to 2011, and Peugeot's shrank 7.6 percent. Fiat, however, barely dented its domestic workforce of nearly 63,000 despite being the only European maker to close an assembly plant.

In all cases, the softly-softly approach has failed to keep pace with a 13 percent Western European market decline over the period. "They've just been kicking the can down the road, but they're getting to the end of the road," Harbour said.

From similar overcapacity levels in 2007, when auto plants on both sides of the Atlantic were producing about 85 percent of maximum output, surviving U.S. plants have stepped up to 90 percent while Europeans sagged to 74 percent, AlixPartners says.

The averages mask contrasts: two in five European plants are running below 75 percent, deemed the minimum profitable rate, while Volkswagen's factories are close to full tilt. The laggards are concentrated in Italy, France and Spain.

Divergent interests between the increasingly dominant German automaker and its struggling rivals may complicate capacity cuts, as well as the industry's handling of issues from CO2 regulation to international trade pacts.

Higher restructuring hurdles, from bankruptcy law to labour protection, also mean European cutbacks will never match Detroit's for depth or speed. Still, the U.S. example is too recent and, so far, successful to ignore.

"Barack Obama said the federal government was ready to help (GM and Chrysler) on condition they carry out the necessary restructuring," said Laurence Parisot, head of French employers' organization Medef, days before Peugeot unveiled its cuts.

"If we want our companies to be competitive market leaders again in five or 10 years, we have to accept some adjustments," she said.

POLITICAL TRANSITION

That view is gaining traction across the political spectrum. Francois Hollande, France's new Socialist president, initially voiced "shock" at Peugeot's plan to close the Aulnay plant near Paris, calling it "unacceptable".

But official objections to the plan have since faded and company insiders say government had, in fact, been briefed in advance on the announcement, and even appeared to help with its delivery; within hours of the automaker's news conference, the head of France's state-owned railway, SNCF, said it would pay "particular attention" to laid-off carworkers looking for jobs.

And Safran officials also told reporters that the partly government-owned aerospace conglomerate was already in talks on hiring surplus Peugeot staff.

Even Arnaud Montebourg, the industry minister who had pledged to resist Peugeot's plans, last week called on unions to "act responsibly" out of consideration for the 90,000 French workers whose jobs the company hopes to preserve.

Governments' own financial troubles have closed the option of further state aid.

"They can't just prop up sales again, because there's no underlying demand and they're too broke anyway," said Philippe Houchois, a London-based auto analyst with UBS.

Some trade unions are also bargaining from weakness. France's Force Ouvriere has agreed a pay freeze and flexible working time at one Peugeot plant and to renegotiate conditions at others, mirroring labour deals struck by GM in Britain and Fiat in Italy.

But the larger French union CGT has vowed to fight to save Aulnay and block further concessions - underlining the difficulties that still beset European restructuring.
