White House releases Obama beer recipes after calls from public

(Reuters) - Bowing to growing pressure from thirsty and curious Americans in both parties, the White House on Saturday released the recipes for President Barack Obama's homemade beers, revealing the executive branch's penchant for honey-flavored brews.

In a blog post entitled "Ale to the Chief," White House Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass said that "with public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it."

"To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before," Kass wrote.

The key ingredient for the White House Honey Brown Ale and the White House Honey Porter, though, may be tough to come by - the honey is straight from the White House's first-ever beehive.

Kass wrote that the "honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn't sweeten it."

However, Brandon Skall, the chief executive of local brewery DC Brau, said it would "pump up the alcohol and give it some sweetness."

The ale would likely pair well with a spicy and savory dish such as pork tenderloin or roast duck, said Skall, who added he would like to make the beers in his District of Columbia brewery. The porter would work well with a dessert or even floated with ice cream, he added.

THE AUDACITY OF HOPS?

The recipes were released as Obama headed to campaign in Colorado, a swing state that is embracing small, independent beer producers. The birthplace of Coors beer currently has the third highest number of craft breweries in the country, behind only California and Washington, according to the web magazine Atlantic Cities.

The commander-in-chief bought a home brewing kit last year and, according to media reports, has served the beer at St. Patrick's Day and Super Bowl celebrations. Obama is now part of a growing movement - 28,835 people currently belong to the American Homebrewers Association.

Although George Washington brewed beer at his Mount Vernon home, there's "no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House," Kass wrote.

Last month, Obama told a man in Iowa that his campaign bus was stocked with White House beers, and even shared a sample. Curiosity came to a head in the last few weeks as recipe requests poured onto the White House's online petition site known as "We the People."

Obama's opponent in the November election, Mitt Romney, belongs to the Mormon faith, which shuns alcohol. But the Republican Party could still tap voter interest - its vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan hails from Wisconsin, a major beer-making state, and he has professed affection for micro-brews.

Conscious Relationships | elephant journal

Most people are driven by their willpower.

Generally we do things in our lives because?our will, our ego, creates the logic of: ?I want this, I want that? and ?When I have this, I will be happy.?

The ?I want? syndrome creates patterns which can form?a vicious circle of jealousy, anger and darkness, creating a world of fear, doubt and?discomfort, moving us away from the true self which is connected to joy, love and?light.

The result is our need for love becomes stronger than our ability to express love.

In this world, we see things from a highly individual perspective that places a?continual state of stress on our body, our breathing and our mind. We do not realize what?motivates these ?I wants.? By having thoughts like, ?If I do not do enough, I will not be rewarded,? we forget that the ?I? is?only an illusion and that this vicious circle will simply never satisfy us.

From the moment we are born, the most important aspect of life becomes relationship.

Relationship is central for survival and for a sense of belonging and well-being. To?understand relationship is to understand that this is what makes us human, but sometimes we bring too much of the ?I want? syndrome into the relationship. In the beginning we learn to relate to what is closest and most dear to our heart, and?this is the love a mother has for her child. We understand that relationship is an?expression of love, a sharing of love and a communication of love.

Then the ego forms and most of us forget this core aspect of relationship. If our relationships with our parents aren?t healthy, and for many of us, this is true, we begin to need love rather than express love. This feeling then gets carried into other relationships.

This sense of neediness is what our society has condoned as normal and acceptable.?Hence, it is difficult to see this neediness as it is such a core aspect of how we see the?world.

I see the world today as suffering from a lack of conscious relationship and full of what I?term ?needy? relationship. I see this as the cause of many worldwide problems that aren?t?always attributed directly to this issue.

Over the next months I will be working with conscious relationship in order to help this?to be easily put into practice. Let us embrace conscious relationship in all its aspects so?that we can release this neediness and allow our lives to become filled with love.

~

Innov8 health tech startups pitch | EnterChange

When Dawn Sheanshang suddenly found herself caring for her sick father, she became overwhelmed by a regiment of seven medications.

Seven new businesses were presented Thursday at an Innov8 for Health Showcase at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The Enquirer/Cara Owsley

An Internet search yielded no good option for organizing the pills and then checking to be sure that she delivered and he took the right ones at the right time.

Sheanshang, a pharmaceutical sales rep, thought she could leverage iPads and mobile devices to better identify and track pills. She shared her idea with the year-old nonprofit Innov8 for Health, which enrolled her in this summer?s healthcare IT accelerator program and matched her with serial entrepreneur Jeffrey Shepard.

Working tirelessly in the Corryville accelerator since June, the pair has developed the Virtual Pillbox, a web and mobile technology that allows caretakers and patients to match pills in their box with high quality images on a screen. It provides detailed instructions from the Food & Drug Administration, doctor or pharmacist, and sends notifications and reminders to take and refill prescriptions.

The pair has partnerships pending with Walgreens, CVS, Kroger and VRI, a Franklin-based provider of in-home medical monitoring. Now, they need $250,000 to get the product ready for those customers and to sell to even more.

Twelve entrepreneurs behind seven new businesses presented on Thursday afternoon at the Cincinnati Museum Center cutting-edge technologies that could change the way healthcare is administered today. They are the first to graduate from Innov8 for Health, a year-old organization formed by the region?s foremost corporations and healthcare institutions to make Cincinnati a national hub of healthcare technology innovation and job creation.

A key goal of the inaugural effort was to help the most promising new businesses raise money from investors to build and launch their products. The companies pitched Thursday?s crowd of investors and potential customers to raise a combined $2.3 million to turn their inventions into technologies that change lives and long-established health care practices.

?We have to get these companies follow-on funding,? said Sunnie Southern, an Innov8 founder and lead volunteer. ?That?s the last phase of Innov8. That?s how we know we were successful.?

Innov8 kicked off last December with an event for college students and entrepreneurs to pitch their health care-related business ideas and win prizes and help from experienced health care and business professionals. A business concept expo in April let them, and others with health care ideas, share again. The nonprofit chose the most promising companies to receive $20,000, three months of office space and support and mentorship from hundreds local healthcare, venture capital and small business executives.

Investors were impressed Thursday that most companies had products built and potential customers testing and proving them.

?I suspect a number of the companies will have no difficulty raising money,? said Dov Rosenberg, a partner with Allos Ventures, a local venture capital firm. ?They are taking on big problems. To the extent they are able to solve them, they should have real promising companies.?

The technologies include:

Virtual Pillbox, created by Sheanshang and Shepard?s new company MedaCheck LLC.

Betterpointment, a mobile application that lets patients make appointments with doctors and report their symptoms and pain in advance of a visit. Founder Richard Weisberger bills his product as a technology that saves doctors time and gives patients better outcomes. He hasn?t determined a financial need yet.

MyFearZapper, a mobile and web game that helps kids overcome fears that range from bugs and monsters to abuse, building up confidence in kids and reducing the chance of mental health issues. Founders Andrea Brady, a former Procter & Gamble brand manager, and Tracy Ruberg, a sales executive at Dell, have partnered with top mental health doctors to test the product. They need $300,000 to continue development and sell to customers.

eProvizion, the first of several software programs built by Satec Health Solutions LLC. It helps human resources and information technology managers at hospitals, nursing homes and physician?s offices maintain HIPAA compliance. St. Elizabeth?s Hospital has already used the product for three years, and partners Phil and Emily Stinson hope to secure a $250,000 investment to market it to other customers.

I Feel Great Apps, a series of applications that give patients control over their health. Founder Steve Deal, who owns Deal Corporation in Dayton, has already created one application that lets patients keep a searchable journal of their doctors appointments and health records, to reference in case of a concern or an insurance dispute. Deal plans to raise $750,000 fo hire developers to complete the product and build others, and begin selling to doctors and insurers.

Caring Ties, a mobile and web application that lets a family of caregivers communicate with each other and physicians about a loved one?s care and treatment. Founders Bill Nadler and Jerry Felix already operate CCM Link, an IT firm that?builds software for?healthcare providers. They?ve spent $650,000 to create the product and plan to raise another $500,000 to market it to healthcare providers, the families they serve and companies that provide insurance benefits to employees.

My Healthy Tale, an interactive storybook that uses characters to teach kids with diseases like diabetes how to care for themselves. Created by 20-year-old Xavier University student Anthony Breen, in partnership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the technology reduces fear and anxiety associated with a disease and motivates children to live a healthy lifestyle over a lifetime. Breen will distribute the application through the iPhone app store. He hopes to raise $250,000 to continue to develop books to help kids.

Slick Sleek to regain winning thread in Pippa Birthday Stakes at Hall Green

Slick Sleek?s winning journey came to a halt, when he suffered an unlucky defeat last week. The black dog went through plenty of mess in the beginning, and was in no position to make an impact afterwards. As a result, he finished fourth behind Stepaside Eagle.

It was Slick Sleek's first loss, which came after two excellent victories. He made his debut with a huge bang, when outsmarting Welton South by three and a quarter lengths at Sheffield. He registered another emphatic win in mid August, bagging the first prize by 1? lengths.

The bettors should not judge him on his recent trouncing, as it was no more than an unlucky day for him. He possesses plenty of potential, and can easily annihilate his rivals in the Pippa Birthday Stakes at Hall Green on Saturday, September 1st.

The 258 metres race is scheduled to begin at 20:30 GMT. The winning hound will walk away with a handy cash prize worth ?200. Among Slick Sleek?s opponents are: Ballymac Drogba, Caribbean Rocky, Edgars Champ, Aero Flash and Compass Biscuit.

Starting the race from the red box always helps the hounds to win short-distance races. Compass Biscuit has this advantage today, but the draw may be the only real bonus for her in this company.

Ballymac Drogba sets a decent standard over two and four bends. The white and black dog was third in his previous open race here in July. His recent trial time was decent, but it is still unsure whether he will be able to carry forward the momentum.

Caribbean Rocky?s recent form reads well enough in context of the race. The black dog is coming to this venue after seizing the runner-up spot twice at Coventry last month.

Nothing less than the best exit will suffice for Aero Flash. Edgars Champ will have to step up on his recent efforts. The fawn dog faced a few terrible defeats at Monmore lately.

Caribbean Rocky certainly carries a major threat. But Slick Sleek is expected to handle things nicely to secure the top rank with ease. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Celebrating Women's Sexuality | WNC Woman

?

By Virginia Kaufmann

?

?

?Sex is a natural function. You can?t make it happen, but you can teach people to let it happen? .?? ~Dr William H. Masters

?

Recently, for the purpose of this interview, I had the pleasure of meeting Heather Cohen and Robin Fann-Costanzo, co-creators of Feel The Vibe, based here in Asheville. Though otherwise our paths might not have crossed, I am happy to have had the opportunity to meet them. As I would soon discover, they are truly dedicated to helping women and, by extension, the greater community. According to Robin, ?We strive to empower women to be pro-active around their bodies and sexual health. If women are encouraged to embrace their bodies and sexuality, then there is the opportunity to create intimacy with a partner, and loving, honest relationships with themselves, their families and their communities.?

?

As a teenager in the early 70s, a friend and I discovered her sister?s book called ?The Art of Sensual Massage.? When we came across it, it was as if we had found a hidden cache of forbidden fruit. Though times have changed, and the media has brought the taboo into the mainstream, there are still many who are not totally comfortable with open sexuality. Actually, when asked to write this piece, I realized that I still carried a minor ?tickle? if you will, with the thought of openly addressing sexual topics. I told them both that as I age, I realize that I am very common; if I am feeling, thinking or dealing with something, odds are there are thousands more, just like me, feeling the same.

?

Keenly aware of the stigma and issues that still surround women today, these two kind, well-educated women started Feel the Vibe to create a safe, supportive and educational environment to facilitate women coming together to explore issues around their sexual health, and offer tools for personal growth and exploration. ?There is no judgment. We meet the group where they are at and let the women lead. We strive to build community by encouraging authentic, true expression, and allow for each woman to have her voice heard,? smiles Heather warmly. I have to attest, within minutes of being in their company, I found myself not only willing, but also really wanting to share. Heather goes on to say, ?Each culture has found their own way to address sexuality. Many indigenous cultures use ritual and ceremony where female elders educate young women and male elders educate young men around issues of sexuality and relationship. Because our culture offers less ritual space, our hope is that our group provides a safe space for women to explore topics of sexuality and health, to learn from us and from each other.?

?

Currently, Robin and Heather are providing sexual education, and body awareness through a class called Yoga for women?s sexual health and vitality at local venues like Asheville Community Yoga. During these classes, women learn skills to connect with their bodies and breath, and to move their vital/sexual energy in the safe confines of a yoga class. They also teach communication skills, Taoist visualization and breathing techniques. At these classes, they provide information and samples of sensual massage oils, erotic products and organic lubricants that are also available for purchase. As much as they enjoy these classes, because of the diverse groups of women that gather, Robin and Heather expressed a desire to have women host small private gatherings with their friends for a more intimate setting. ?Initially we visualized women bringing us in for women?s groups, workshops, wedding showers, or birthday parties,? says Robin. Heather said though currently their groups are women only, she would love to have Feel the Vibe offer educational groups for men, lead by men.

?

?Our vision is to create a safe, educational, sex-positive environment for women. We believe that when women are nurturing their sexual health it allows both men and women to lead more vital and satisfying lives. We offer the highest quality, eco-friendly, erotic toys and sensual products that are organic and local whenever possible.?

?

Robin Fann-Costanzo has been a licensed massage and bodywork specialist and yoga instructor since 1993. She teaches Esalen? Massage (founded at The Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA) and is actually featured on their instructional video. She also studied Gestalt Therapy and Craniosacral therapy at the Esalen Institute, which is where she met Heather. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Robin lived in California for 20 years and currently lives in Asheville with her husband, Corey Costanzo, and her two beautiful daughters, Sofia, age seven and Rosalina, age three. Robin also has a private massage and yoga practice. Her husband, Corey, is a massage therapist, somatic therapist and is currently a counselor at the not-for-profit ?Kids at Work? program which teaches at-risk kids how to cook. Robin has always had a passion for teaching women about their health and sexuality. She has studied with many teachers including Rachel Abrams, author of The Multi-Orgasmic Woman, Charles and Caroline Muir, co-authors of The Art of Conscious Loving and Margot Anand, author of The Art of Sexual Ecstasy. Robin will also be inducted into The World Massage Hall of Fame, later this month.

?

Heather Cohen has a Master?s Degree in Art Therapy and 15 years experience providing art therapy for everyone from children to adults, including the rites of passage ritual and ceremony. Heather grew up in New York and moved to California, at the age of 20, where she attended The California Institute of Integral Studies. She then moved to Big Sur where she studied Gestalt Therapy at the Esalen Institute and assisted Rachel Abrams, a leading voice in Women?s Sexual Health. During her time in Big Sur, she also co-founded a Cultural Arts and Education Center. Heather moved to Asheville nine months ago and is currently an event director and producer. She is producing her second Asheville Chocolate and Arts Festival, at the Asheville Civic Center, December 8, 2012. Heather created this family-friendly festival, which offers world music, dance performances and workshops, local art and crafts, a live music Fashion show (featuring local designers and models) and free chocolate samples from 10 local chocolate and desert makers.
