The Path To Self Improvement And Happiness | iGodMind

The Path To Self Improvement And Happiness abundance 2 Stress is an enemy of happiness. When our minds are stressed, our mental and physical bodies are harmed. To retain clarity of mind and the motivation to work towards our goals, it is critical to banish unnecessary stress from our minds. Make time in your schedule each day to take a few minutes alone and clear your mind. This refreshing time can improve your self-image and peace.? Hang out with people who are similar to you. They?ll help you stay on track by being good role models for positive behavior, and you?ll better balance any negative energy you get from people who aren?t as supportive of your self-improvement goals.? Maximize your time for personal development to help you get more done. Allow yourself more time for breaks. Although it sounds counterproductive, taking breaks when working actually allows to to get more accomplished, because you aren?t getting burnt out. The breaks allow you a chance refresh yourself and work harder.

Identifying your personal values are the stepping stone to figuring out a personal development plan that works for you. Devoting attention to things that undermine your value system is foolish. When you change your attitude and perspective, difficult situations become easier to manage. This allows you to implement personal and professional changes that will last forever.? Always look for opportunities to compliment another person. Doing the opposite and taking the initiative to be kind to others helps you to be kind to yourself too.? No matter what another person?s position in life may be, remember to always treat them with respect. Your treatment of others is a direct reflection of you character.? In your self improvement journey, there is one thing that you must do. No matter what other steps you take, the one critical decision you must make is to be active in your life, not a bystander. Only observing and not living makes you dead to the world, and you must live!

When you are faced with tough, stressful situations, learn to use your intellect more than your emotions. By learning how to remain calm during stressful situations, you have a higher chance of increasing your confidence needed for conquering any obstacle in your life. Breathing deeply can be a powerful way to reduce stress and stay in the moment.? By becoming more healthy inside and out, you will be setting yourself up for success. When you are feeling good, it is easier to feel better about yourself. Feeling healthy and more vibrant allows you to think clearly, perform better physically and enjoy your life more. You will also spend less on medical bills and have more for enjoyable activities. Make a concerted effort to adopt healthy practices.

Figure out your goals in life, and go after them. Sitting and thinking about the life you want will not get you that life. Therefore, you should get off your butt, and actually do something to turn your dream into a reality.? When working on self improvement strive to achieve a high level of self discipline. Your body yearns to give into temptations, but you can control the desires with practice. Learn to resist the desires to overindulge yourself in food, drink, and other physical desires. However, if you control yourself, these negative desires won?t affect your mental and physical health the way they have done in the past.? You should find the information in this article helpful to you and to the people you care about. A measure of diligence in adapting these principles to your own life will pay off in years to come. If you can truly dedicate the time and energy needed to make changes, the rewards will be significant.

Former President Jimmy Carter on Zimmerman Verdict: Jury Made Right 'Legal Decision'

  • (Photo: REUTERS/Amr Abdallah Dalsh)

    Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter speaks during an interview with Reuters in Cairo January 12, 2012.

July 17, 2013|3:06 pm

While speaking with a local Atlanta, Ga. news station, the 39th president argued that the decision made on behalf of the jurors was not a moral one, but rather a legal one based on evidence.

"I think the jury made the right decision based in the evidence presented because the prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman and that he was not defending himself and so forth," Carter told Atlanta's WXIA news station.

"It's not a moral question, it's a legal question and the American law requires that the jury listens to the evidence presented," Carter added.

When asked if the Zimmerman verdict says anything about race in America, Carter responded: "I can't allege the six jurors [?] are not just as sensitive about the race issue as I am or you are," he said. "I would presume they listened to the evidence."

Following Zimmerman's acquittal on Saturday, President Barack Obama, who previously said if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin, released a statement encouraging Americans to respect the decision of the jury.

Follow us

"[?] we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son," Obama said in the statement.

Although the majority of protests regarding the verdict have been peaceful across the nation, there have been some instances of violence, including minor vandalism in Oakland, Calif., as well protests in Los Angeles, Calif. which resulted in the arrest of 13 after violence and vandalism broke out on Monday.

The death of Trayvon Martin and the trial of George Zimmerman have sparked a nationwide debate on race relations and gun laws since Martin was shot in February 2012.

In February, Zimmerman, a 29-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer in a gated community in Sanford, Fla., shot Trayvon Martin, 17, after they got into an altercation as the teen was walking home from a convenience store close to his father's house.

Zimmerman was later charged with second degree murder and manslaughter, and during a tense court trial that began in late June, Zimmerman argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming that Martin attacked him.

The prosecution argued that Zimmerman "tracked" Martin through the gated community and provoked him into a physical confrontation that eventually ended in him taking the young teen's life.

Many Americans have argued that Zimmerman racially profiled Martin, and protests objecting to the verdict are slated for 100 U.S. cities in the upcoming days.

The Rev. Al Sharpton announced Wednesday that he will be leading these national "Justice for Trayvon" peaceful rallies this Saturday in an attempt to encourage the Justice Department to investigate civil rights violations in the case.

"Saturday, the verdict lost the battle, but we have not lost the war," Sharpton, known as Baptist minister and civil rights activist, said on Wednesday, as reported by USA Today.

"People all across the country will gather to show that we are not having a two- or three-day anger fit. This is a social movement for justice," Sharpton added, stressing that the events will be non-violent.

Destination Poland

By Luiza Oleszczuk.

Driving around Warsaw one can?t help noticing some traits of the old, post-soviet Poland ? gray buildings, so typical of Central and Eastern Europe; a few small dingy shops here and there. But enter any of the offices or look at the sparkling shopping centers dotted around the capital you can feel the air of modern Europe and globalised business.

There?s plenty of talk about outsourcing destinations like Chin, India, or the Philippines which has the tendency to overshadow other places, like those in Central and Eastern Europe.

And it would be a pity to bypass these newly advanced economies. Outsourcing business, knowledge and IT processes to that region can be cost-effective and sustainable, as my visit to Poland this June sufficiently confirmed.

During the 2008 ? 2009 financial meltdown that ended up halting GDP growth all over Europe, putting most EU countries in the red and seriously undermining the European banking system ? Poland was the only country in the EU with a growing GDP, which rose 1.8% in 2009, while the EU total economy contracted by 4.2% that year.

This third largest country in ?Emerging Europe? (6th largest in the EU) has survived the storm with stable, strong banks and economy, and a stable, responsive government. Four years later, the investment climate in the country remains attractive ? Poland, with a population of over 38.5 million, is currently the fastest growing economy in Europe. And it?s open for business.

According to the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, the GDP growth will continue in the coming years[1]. But those estimates are shared by large international think tanks, like Ernst&Young, IMF[2] and others. Ernst&Young[3] calls Poland ?One of the most successful CEE [Central and Eastern Europe] reformers? and points out the country is characterized by a ?robust supplier base? and ?people with engineering background.?

It?s good to also remember that Poland is the largest beneficiary of EU subsidies[4], after having joined the union in 2004.

India's top court allows Mumbai dance bars to reopen

NEW DELHI: India's top court on Tuesday overturned a ban on dance bars in the city of Mumbai, allowing hundreds of premises which employed women to dance and entertain customers to reopen.

The ruling upheld a 2006 judgement by the Bombay High Court, which said the ban instituted by the Maharashtra state government a year earlier violated the constitutional right to earn a living.

The decision comes amid concerns over "moral policing" in Mumbai, India's financial capital and the home of Bollywood, where police in recent years have enforced a series of strict measures.

The regulations include early closing hours for nightclubs, excessive red tape, outdated rules on overcrowding and an increase in the minimum age limit to buy beer from 18 to 21.

Supreme Court judges Altamas Kabir and S.S. Nijjar said they agreed with the high court's decision "that struck down the 2005 amendment in the Bombay Police Act whereby closing down dance bars in the city of Mumbai".

Tuesday's decision will allow dance bars to operate legally after a forced hiatus of several years, while the state government appealed the high court ruling.

The estimated 700 establishments across Maharashtra state employ more than 75,000 women who perform Bollywood-style dance routines and get showered with cash in return.

The state government had branded the bars in Mumbai as dens of iniquity and fronts for prostitution. It claimed they corrupted the young and were meeting places for criminals.

Bar owners, activists and non-governmental organisations hotly contested the ban and denied the allegations, saying the establishments only staged dance shows.

There was no immediate comment on the ruling from the state government, which has waged a long campaign against the dance bars.

The dancers' labour union had opposed the ban, saying many of its members would be forced into prostitution to earn a living.

In ritzy bars in Mumbai frequented by well-heeled businessmen, dancers who usually bared only their midriffs were able to earn more than 100 dollars a day. They made far less money at down-at-heel establishments.

News Corpse ? Race, Politics, And The Conservative Cognitive ...

?The greatest hope that most Americans ? including Republicans ? had when Barack Obama was elected president was that the election of a black man as the country?s president would reduce, if not come close to eliminating, the racial tensions that have plagued America for generations.?

Fox NewsWhat strain of myopic lunkheadedness could have produced that appalling misunderstanding of racial politics? There is no one with a functioning brain who could ever have thought that just by electing an African-American president, racial tensions would be eliminated. That is such a shallow analysis of modern society that no amount of shame would be sufficient to heap on the author. The only explanation for expelling such an idiotic notion is that someone is looking for a contract with Fox News.

The quote above is the opening paragraph of uber-rightist Dennis Prager?s column in the National Review, and it demonstrates how acutely myopic conservatives are when attempting to grasp the complex issue of race. Prager is actually stunned that ?The election, and even the reelection, of a black man as president, in a country that is 87 percent non-black ? a first in human history ? has had no impact on what are called ?racial tensions.?? But where he got the idea that sending an African-American to the White House would weave some sort of magic spell over the country that would eliminate racism is simply incomprehensible.

What makes this even more dumbfounding is that the truth is readily apparent in so many aspects of our national profile. If anything, Barack Obama?s election exacerbated racial tensions in some constituencies. People who were predisposed to prejudice hardened their views. Borderline racists slipped across the line and succumbed to their latent bigotry. Amongst politicians and pundits, racial agendas became more aggressive and rhetorical attacks, both blatant and subliminal, multiplied. Shortly after Obama?s inauguration the FBI reported an unprecedented increase in the number of assassination threats. The most simple minded observer ought to have recognized that Obama did not win 100% of the vote, and that the nearly half of the electorate that voted against him contained the same amount of bigots as before the election.

Prager goes on to assert that ?racial tensions,? which he dismissively puts in quotes, are actually the fault of African-Americans. He says that the notion is ?a lie perpetrated by the Left.? He claims that the term is ?a euphemism for a black animosity toward whites and a left-wing construct.? This effort to pretend that racism doesn?t exist, except in the minds of the victims, is commonly found among racists who seek to absolve themselves of any responsibility for the lingering hatred in American culture. According to Prager, blacks are just insufficiently grateful for the generosity shown them by the majority white population. After all, we let them have their president, didn?t we?

Prager has some company with Richard Cohen of the Washington Post whose column today made some equally lunkheaded assertions. His piece titled ?Racism vs. reality,? was a defense of racism wherein he declared that he ?can understand why [George] Zimmerman was suspicious and why he thought Martin was wearing a uniform we all recognize.? Cohen was referring to Martin?s hoodie, but he might as well have been referring to his skin, because Cohen?s premise was that there is justification for being suspicious of young black men.

Cohen berates politicians who fail to ?acknowledge the widespread fear of crime committed by young black males,? noting that ?We know them from the nightly news.? However, that widespread fear is largely a product of the distinctly biased representation of African-Americans on the nightly news (and all through the day as well on Fox News and other cable networks). Cohen?s argument relies on phony statistics that disparage blacks as being more prone to criminal activity when, for the most part, they are just more prone to being prosecuted and incarcerated.

Cohen closes by saying that ?There?s no doubt in my mind that Zimmerman profiled Martin and, braced by a gun, set off in quest of heroism.? But then he adds that ?The result was a quintessentially American tragedy ? the death of a young man understandably suspected because he was black and tragically dead for the same reason.? Understandably suspected? Cohen is alleging that it?s perfectly OK, even understandable, to presume foul intentions just by the color of one?s skin. Isn?t that an outright admission of racism?

In a ?Stand Your Ground,? ?Racial Profiling? society, it is disheartening to see these kinds of opinions being expressed in mainstream media. The consequences of those combined concepts led directly to the tragedy in Sanford, Florida. And it proves that, contrary to Prager?s moronic rambling, there is much work to be done before racial tensions are eliminated. And it won?t happen because one person gets elected to office.

ISS urges vote against four McKesson directors over CEO pay

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) is urging shareholders of McKesson Corp to vote against the re-election of four directors, citing the firm's persistent problems in addressing shareholders' concerns about executive compensation.

Chief among the concerns was "the sizable and growing" lump-sum pension payment due to Chairman and CEO John Hammergren had he retired, which was worth some $159 million, ISS said.

The ISS recommendation follows criticism of the San Francisco-based healthcare technologies and drug distribution firm by CtW Investment Group. CtW Investment is part of the Change to Win labor federation, whose members include pensions funds that are McKesson shareholders.

McKesson said its governance and executive compensation structure helped drive its strong performance.

"Our board continues to listen and be responsive to shareholder input, and we have made a number of significant governance and compensation changes in direct response to input from our shareholders," McKesson said in a statement.

In a July 1 letter to McKesson shareholders, CtW said McKesson's board is "entrenched and insular" and noted a "string of multi-billion dollar compliance and internal control failures under the watch of the audit committee".

CtW Investment Group also urged McKesson shareholders to vote against the re-election of directors Jane Shaw, a 21-year veteran of the board; Alton Irby, a 14-year veteran of the compensation committee as well as Hammergren.

In its recommendation, ISS said shareholders should vote against Irby and three other members of the compensation committee - Edward Mueller, Christine Jacobs and David Lawrence - for failing to address the compensation issues.

"The fact is the CEO's lump sum pension balance represents substantial lifetime costs to shareholders and does not incentivize the CEO's retention," ISS said.

ISS did not recommend the removal of Shaw. It also did not recommend voting against Hammergren because the company has agreed to name a lead independent director.

ISS representatives did not return requests for comment Sunday evening.

The ISS recommendations were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

McKesson's shareholders are scheduled to vote at the company's July 31 annual shareholder meeting.

Sony Xperia Z successor due in Korea by end of year?

Details of Sony's expected next flagship phone emerged today, and it seems that the Sony Xperia i1 (codenamed "Honami") may arrive in at least one country by the end of the year.

Sony Korea CEO Kenji Sakai said that the Xperia Z successor is due in the country before the end of 2013, Korean site Economic Daily reported.

The phone's main draw will be its 20-megapixel camera, according to rumors, though that still places it at half the MP of Nokia's recently unveiled Lumia 1020.

The Sony Xperia i1 "Honami" will supposedly be the first of many in a new line of Sony handsets equipped with high-quality cameras.

The Xperia Z is going on sale in the U.S. starting this week, while it's been in the U.K. for some time already.

See you at IFA?

Sony is apparently not content with the Xperia Z and the Xperia Z Ultra, the latter of which ups the screen size well into phablet territory at 6.4 inches.

Rumors of the unannounced next device popped up most recently at the end of June, when some alleged Xperia i1 photos materialized online.

The rumor at that point was the phone called "Honami" would debut on July 4, but that obviously didn't pan out.

Current speculation holds that Sony may lift the veil off the Xperia i1/Honami at its Sept. 4 press event during IFA 2013 in Berlin.

Decision in Montana boosts GOP chances in Senate

Associated Press

Posted on July 13, 2013 at 8:03 PM

Updated yesterday at 10:03 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans received a boost in their attempt to win back the majority in the Senate next year when a former Democratic governor bowed out of Montana's open Senate race.

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer says he will not run for the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Max Baucus in 2014. Republicans have not settled on a candidate in Republican-leaning state, but Schweitzer's decision could give Republicans an opening.

Republicans need to pick up six seats to recapture the Senate majority. Democrats must defend 21 seats, including seven in largely rural states that Obama lost in 2012.

Obama hopes to send more Democrats to Congress in next year's election to help pass key items on his agenda like immigration and gun control.

Never say never! After swearing off matrimony six years ago, actress Halle Berry said "I do" once again on Saturday.

On Sunday, Berry's rep confirmed that she married French actor Olivier Martinez at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France.

Two got engaged in 2012. The marriage marks the third time down the aisle for Berry, who wed baseball player David Justice in 1993 (divorced in 1997) and married singer-songwriter Eric Benet in 2001 (divorced in 2005). This is the first marriage for Martinez.

Berry also has a child with former partner Gabriel Aubry. She's currently pregnant with her second child -- her first with Martinez.

Red HTC One now available in the UK

Red HTC One

'Glamor red' HTC One launches exclusively at Phones4u, available on contract

Right on schedule, the "glamor red" HTC One is now available to purchase from Phones4u in the UK. The retailer, which has exclusivity over the red HTC One in the UK, is offering the device on contracts from Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and EE starting at £31 per month. Right now there's no way to pick the phone up off-contract online — although brick-and-mortar P4U stores are often more accommodating to SIM-free buyers.

The red HTC One is — you guessed it — the same aluminum-backed phone we know and love, only with a different and more eye-catching coat of paint. Unfortunately there's still no official info on any plans to launch the red variant outside of the UK.

Mursi's fall in Egypt comforts Saudis, disconcerts Qatar

By Angus McDowall and Regan Doherty

RIYADH/DOHA (Reuters) - The $12 billion in aid Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait offered Egypt this week showed their delight at the army's ousting of President Mohamed Mursi in a reversal for Islamists empowered by the Arab ferment of 2011.

It also marked a recalibration of power among Gulf Arab states which, with the notable exception of Qatar, had viewed the Arab uprisings as catastrophic for regional stability and feared the Muslim Brotherhood would use its domination of Egypt to push a radical, Islamist agenda in their own backyard.

Qatar, however, saw support for the Muslim Brotherhood as a means to project its influence in the Middle East, and gave Egypt $7 billion in aid during the movement's year in power.

"I suspect the Qataris will draw back somewhat," said Robert Jordan, a former U.S. ambassador to Riyadh. "Their infatuation with the Muslim Brotherhood has probably been dampened. They're likely to come around to a position closer to the Saudis."

Saudi Arabia in particular was alarmed by the popular unrest that toppled Egypt's Hosni Mubarak and Tunisia's Zein al-Abidine Ben Ali, and rippled through Bahrain, Yemen and other countries.

But most Gulf rulers had fewer qualms about rebellions against Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi and Syria's Bashar al-Assad, whose links with Shi'ite Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah movement had long antagonized U.S.-backed Sunni Arab states.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which has challenged Riyadh's traditional leadership in recent years, were broadly aligned on support for rebels in Syria and Libya, but they bitterly disagreed over their attitude to Islamist groups. Now that argument appears to be over - at least for now.

FLAWED STRATEGY

Doha insiders say it is too early to judge Qatar's reaction to the crisis unfolding in Egypt, but they say the new emir may consider reducing his wealthy country's support for the Muslim Brotherhood and playing a less prominent regional role.

"They have admitted that there were some flaws in their Egypt strategy," said a Doha-based source who has advised the Qatari government and who asked not to be named.

"Their intervention was seen as overly reflexive support of the (Mursi) government without adequately taking into account the will of the people. The way it was handled has caused them some problems, and they have acknowledged that," he said.

For Saudi Arabia, the Brotherhood's fall was sweetened by the decisive intervention of an Egyptian military with ties to Gulf states that flourished under Mubarak. Army chief General Abdel Fatteh al-Sisi was once a military attache in Riyadh.

"He has long experience there and long ties to not only the Saudi military, but also the political leadership," said Jordan.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE publicly insist they do not comment on other states' internal affairs, but both rapidly broadcast congratulatory messages to Egypt's new interim leader, tacitly signaling their hostility to the Muslim Brotherhood.

"The problem with the Brotherhood is their ideology has no borders," said Abdullah al-Askar, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of Saudi Arabia's Shoura Council, a body King Abdullah appointed to debate policy and advise the government.

"They don't believe in national identity, but they believe in the identity of the Islamic nation. They have their fingers in different states in the Gulf," he said.

That concern was manifest in the trial in Abu Dhabi of 94 Emiratis accused of plotting to overthrow the government on behalf of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Their sentences were announced a day before the tanks rolled in Cairo last week.

While Kuwait's ruling family shares Saudi and UAE concerns about the Brotherhood, its stance is complicated by the presence of Islamists linked to the movement in its parliament.

As a result it has been less vocal than other Gulf states in criticizing the Brotherhood after the Arab uprisings and has left fundraising for Syrian rebels largely to private citizens.

SOFT POWER

Like the Brotherhood, most Gulf states follow strict versions of Islam, but while the Islamist movement preaches political activism, Gulf clerics mostly espouse a doctrine of support for traditional rulers and oppose radical change.

In Doha, the question now is how far the new emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid al-Thani, might retreat from Qatar's alliance of convenience with the Middle East's sturdiest Islamist movement.

Qatar's support for the Brotherhood, including sheltering its sympathizers, arming its brigades in Syria and, some say, guiding the editorial policy of its Arabic-language Al Jazeera television station, has irritated Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

"They (the Qataris) think soft power comes via the Brotherhood, via Al Jazeera television? but this is dangerous," said the Saudi Shoura Council's Askar, saying he was speaking for himself and not for the kingdom.

He said the Qataris "use the Brotherhood for political reasons", without belonging to the movement themselves.

There is no outward sign yet of Qatar changing its policy.

Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, a prominent Doha-based Egyptian cleric and Brotherhood champion, has continued to lament last week's army intervention in Cairo that was backed by popular protests.

"HEDGING THEIR BETS"

And Al Jazeera's coverage is still interpreted as pro-Mursi, prompting Egypt's military to close its Cairo bureau, where some staff quit in protest at its perceived pro-Brotherhood line.

"The Qataris are hedging their bets right now. They're willing to engage with anyone who will come to the table. No one knows how this is going to play out. Right now, the best option for Qatar is to remain quiet," said the Doha source.

It amounts to a weighty foreign policy challenge for the new emir, whose father stepped down unexpectedly this month.

"The abdication was miraculously well-timed. They changed the regime one week before Egypt hit the wall," the Doha source said. "Now they have the opportunity to refashion the policy, and present the new emir as someone whose policies will be more aligned with the will of the Egyptian people."

It is not clear how far the Brotherhood's defeat in Egypt will energize Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies in the region, although the election of a Saudi ally to head Syria's opposition last week was seen as evidence of the shifting power balance.

On Wednesday, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash wrote an opinion piece in Washington-based Foreign Policy magazine condemning political Islam and pledging support for Middle Eastern countries he described as moderate.

Saudi King Abdullah's Ramadan message inveighed against joining political parties, an apparent warning to Saudi members of the Brotherhood angry at Riyadh's approval of Mursi's fall.

Saudi rulers may worry about radicalization of Islamists in Egypt, but homegrown ones in the Gulf pose little domestic threat, analysts and former diplomats in the region said.

Mustafa Alani of the Geneva-based Gulf Research Centre said: "Their bigger concerns are about the interference of a strong Muslim Brotherhood in the internal affairs of their own states."

An intimate look at the love life of an NFL star with Cameron Jordan

Cameron Jordan opens up with our Lindsay Brauner to give an unprecedented peek at balancing the NFL lifestyle and someone you love.

Cameron Jordan Talks About His Fake Girlfriend (via Lindsay Brauner)

Thanks goes to TheScientist019 for transcribing this interview!

Lindsay Brauner (LB): Cam, thanks for joining us!

Cameron Jordan (CJ): Thanks for having me. When you say "us," what is "us?"

LB: "Us" is, like, anyone who's watching. Like, anyone who watches this video is "us."

CJ: Thank you for having me.

LB: Should I say "thanks for joining me?" I mean, that seems a little selfish; you're joining everyone. I mean, I see people everywhere. Do you? You see all of them, right?

CJ: * nods *

LB: Yeah? Okay. Good. All of us here want to thank you. All of us on the couch. There are, like, six of us, right?

CJ: Yeah! That's the Manti Te'o syndrome right?

LB: Oh, wait! If you had to make up a fake girlfriend, who would it be and why?

CJ: Mm.

LB: Mm.

CJ: Mm.

LB: Mm. There's so many choices?

CJ: So many different choices. You know, my combination would be something like Corinne Bailey Rae meets Leona Lewis meets Jennifer Hudson. Somewhere in there.

LB: That's a lot of meeting!

CJ: Right? Maybe a little Candace Parker for the height.

LB: I'm a fan of Candace Parker.

CJ: That puts you at like, 5'9", 5'10" caramel delight with light brown, hazel eyes.

LB: But remember, you're going to have to say goodbye to her because she's going to tragically perish.

CJ: But that's my spin?she's never leaving. She just works overseas, so I don't have too much contact with her. And, of course, she's gonna married and it'll hurt my heart and everything, but it'll be great for the rebound.

LB: Okay, so she's just going to get married, no tragedy.

CJ: Right now she's in France, doing the whole Paris thing, so honestly, she's got her thing going on and I'm doing my thing and hopefully our things can get together one day, but if not, I just wish her best because that's just how much I love her. That's how much I care.

LB: Has she taught you any French words while she's been over there?

CJ: No, not yet. I'm really excited to one day maybe Skype her, if that's possible?

LB: I mean, you guys are on the phone, like, eight hours a night?

CJ: You know, that's just it, no phone calls. All text messages. I don't believe in Skype. Or Tangoing. Or FaceTime. And she doesn't either. She has horrible reception over there.

LB: Horrible. Yeah, it's bad in Paris.

CJ: Exactly. She only has a limited number of minutes; she doesn't have free-after-nine minutes. We have unlimited texts, though.

LB: Well, that helps. That helps a lot. Emojis? Lots of Emojis?

CJ: Man, smiley faces?she loves smiley faces.

LB: Awwww. What's her favorite Emoji?

CJ: Probably, like, a little purple devil, it's got a little smile. Like, a mischievous grin.

LB: Maybe that's not a good sign.

CJ: No, that's perfect. That means she's thinking of me as I'm thinking of her and she's hating the distance that's between us.

LB: That's what she's referring to with the devil, purple Emoji. Well, Cam, thanks so much for joining us and we'll see you soon. We'll see you on the field and everywhere else where you are: Twitter, Facebook.

CJ: And you may see me with her.

LB: Yeah! Paris! We'll see you in Paris. Is that her?

CJ: No, that will be her. I'm just getting ready to hold her. That's how much I miss her.

LB: Thanks, Cam.

CJ: Thank you.

Never mind the Lumia 1020 ? Nokia?s future rides on the Asha 501

Nokia Lumia 1020 Analysis

Nokia on Thursday announced the $300?Lumia 1020, yet another U.S. flagship phone that is likely doomed to top out at around 300,00 to 500,000 units sold over the coming 12 months ? at best. But at the same time, the true battle for survival is being fought across the world in Asia, Africa and the Middle East as the Asha 501, Nokia?s last hope of stabilizing its feature phone business, hits volume production.

[More from BGR: Live from Nokia?s Lumia 1020 event]

The Asha 501 is currently getting solid, though not ecstatic?reviews?across Asia. It is somewhat?promising that the?501 is No.8 on GSMArena?s list of most widely searched phone models, though. Nokia?s Asha 501 is now racking up 40,000 daily searches on the popular handset site, nearly equaling HTC One and Sony Xperia Z. It is rare for any feature phone to hit such an impressive search interest level?these days, and the phenomenon is?backed up?by Google Trends results?that peg the global Asha 501 search interest at roughly even with BlackBerry?s Q10.

[More from BGR: Microsoft?s major reorganization finally announced]

Google Trends also shows how Nokia?s cheapo Lumia 520 Windows Phone model?continues to steadily build its search volume, while the high-end Lumia 920 is losing altitude rapidly. Nokia?s fate is likely now riding on the roughly $170 Lumia 520 and the $90 Asha 501.

The Lumia 520?must keep the Windows Phone project alive and the Asha 501 simply has to?spark some new?vigor in Nokia?s ailing feature phone business. Nokia?s feature phone volume crashed below 56 million units in the March quarter?from nearly 80 millions in the previous quarter, and there is some?concern that unit sales drifted even lower in the June quarter. Nokia desperately needs a new feature phone hero to stop the rot in its basic handset unit and aid the sale of cheaper Asha models.

The Asha 501 is Nokia?s?big play in 2013. It lacks GPS and 3G support, but it does offer some smartphone-like features such as a proximity sensor, an accelerometer, preloaded games, Wi-Fi, multi-tab browsing and unified messaging. Priced at under $90 without any subsidies in some key markets like India, this has to be enough to persuade budget-minded consumers not to defect to similarly priced Android models?offering higher pixel density and superior camera tech (the 501 features a 3-megapixel rear camera).

This is the defining issue for Nokia right now ? the new high-end Lumia 1020 in the U.S. is likely to be little more than a diversion in the long run. If Nokia is to have a future, it will be in the $80-$200 unsubsidized price bracket.

IMF forecasts slower global growth in 2013-14

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday that it sees slower global growth in 2013 and 2014 than it did just three months ago, citing expectations of a slowdown in key developing countries such as China and Brazil and a more protracted recession in Europe.

The international lending agency released an update of its World Economic Outlook issued in April, projecting the world economy will grow at 3.1 percent this year, down from a 3.3 forecast three months ago. The 2014 projection was cut to 3.8 percent from 4.0 percent.

"The world economy remains in a three-speed mode," said Olivier Blanchard, IMF director of research. "Emerging markets are still growing rapidly. The U.S. recovery is steady, but much of Europe continues to struggle," he told a news conference in Washington, where the IMF is based.

Blanchard said growth almost everywhere is a bit weaker than forecast in April, but downward revisions are particularly noticeable in developing countries.

The IMF said the possibility of a more drawn-out slowdown in developing countries is a new risk that has emerged since April. Blanchard noted a clear downward trend in China, Russia, Brazil and India and attributed it to slowdowns in domestic demand and consumption but also to weaker exports because of sluggishness in advanced economies.

China's 2013 forecast was scaled back to 7.8 compared to 8.1 in April. For 2014, it fell to 7.7 from 8.3 percent.

"My impression is the country where there is the largest risk in terms of large decrease in growth is China," said Blanchard.

The IMF said the world's second largest economy has become unbalanced with too much investment and too little consumption. That investment, largely financed through China's shadow banking system, has grown rapidly during the global financial crisis of the past few years.

In addition to slowing growth, China is seeing a credit squeeze as it tries to tackle the hazards of looming debts that are not reported on bank balance sheets but lurk throughout the country's murky, still developing financial system. That off-balance-sheet lending, or shadow financing, could threaten financial stability if not reined in.

Some experts see the move to crack down on excess leverage as an overdue and necessary effort to address structural problems in China's state-dominated economy.

Still China's expected growth of nearly 8 percent annually is still very robust compared to advanced economies.

Another potential drag on global growth is the possibility that the U.S. will start tapering its extraordinary stimulus program of bond-buying. The Fed program ? known as quantitative easing ? has injected more $2 trillion into financial markets since late 2008 and kept borrowing costs down.

With markets already anticipating the tapering, the IMF said some developing countries are already feeling the effects in the form of falling share prices and depreciating currencies.

A recession in the 17 countries that use the euro currency is shaping up to be deeper than expected, another factor pulling down the forecast, the IMF said. The eurozone is now expected to contract by 0.6 percent this year, compared to the April forecast for a 0.4 percent decline.

"At least in France and to some extent in Germany, there is I think a general lack of confidence in the future, which if it doesn't turn around may end up being partly self-fulfilling, which is worrisome," said Blanchard.

The U.S. economy also looks weaker than previously expected, the IMF said, citing tight fiscal and financial conditions.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde has been frequently criticizing the U.S. for cutting government spending, saying it has been slashing too much, too fast. She has blasted the so-called sequester ? the automatic across-the-board spending cuts instituted in March because Congress could not agree at that time on a budget and debt deal.

The IMF lowered forecasts for U.S. growth to 1.7 percent in 2013, down from 1.9 in April, and to 2.7 percent for 2014 down from 2.9 percent. One reason cited was the sequester remaining in place until 2014, longer than previously projected.

Japan bucked the global trend. The IMF revised its 2013 growth forecast up to 2.0 percent from 1.5 percent in April.

SDK: Windows Phone 8.0

Devices(s): Nokia Lumia 920

Compatibility

Platform(s): Windows Phone 8.0

Article

[edit] Introduction

GeoNames API is a large collection of database containing all countries information. This database contains more than eight million places names whose information can be freely downloaded.

Using GeoNames API, we can though fetch hundreds of types of information but in this article we will only fetch one type of information; Places Information. To fetch this information, we will use the Wikipedia API.

To draw pushpins on the Maps control, we will use the Pushpin control provided by the Windows Phone Toolkit.

[edit] Prerequisites

  • Windows Phone development environment
  • Registration at the GeoNames site
  • Reference to Windows Phone Toolkit

[edit] References Required

Following references to the DLLs are required.

  • System.Collections.ObjectModel;
  • System.IO.IsolatedStorage;
  • Microsoft.Phone.Maps.Controls;
  • Microsoft.Phone.Maps.Toolkit;

These can be added by Project | References | Add Reference..

Note:?To add the Windows Phone Toolkit, we will install it wptoolkit from NuGet which is a inbuilt tool in VS2012.

[edit] Wikipedia API

To make use of Wikipedia API, we will have to make a HTTP server hit at below link http://api.geonames.org/findNearbyWikipediaJSON?
We will pass a few required parameters like our own location, user name etc. In response, we will get the list of near by places in JSON form.

Note:?One of the parameter i.e. username is compulsory to send with each server request. To know more about username please check this link

[edit] Creating UI

In our UI, we will make use of three text blocks and a Nokia maps control. First TextBlock will have the status message after fetching our device location. Second will have our own latitude value. Last TextBlock will have our longitude value. In our map control, we will show the resultant places with the help of pushpins.

The code in .xaml file is as shown below.

    <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here-->
<Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="0" Margin="12,0,12,0">
<Grid.RowDefinitions>
<RowDefinition Height=".05*"/>
<RowDefinition Height=".05*"/>
<RowDefinition Height=".05*"/>
<RowDefinition Height="*"/>
</Grid.RowDefinitions>
?
<TextBlock Grid.Row="0" HorizontalAlignment="Left" x:Name="statusTextBlock" Text="TextBlock" Visibility="Collapsed"/>
<TextBlock Grid.Row="1" HorizontalAlignment="Left" x:Name="latitudeTextBlock" Text="TextBlock" Visibility="Collapsed"/>
<TextBlock Grid.Row="2" HorizontalAlignment="Left" x:Name="longitudeTextBlock" Text="TextBlock" Visibility="Collapsed"/>
<maps:Map Grid.Row="3" Name="mapControl" Visibility="Collapsed" CartographicMode="Road">
<toolkit:MapExtensions.Children>
<toolkit:MapItemsControl>
<toolkit:MapItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<toolkit:Pushpin GeoCoordinate="{Binding Coordinate}" Content="{Binding Info}" />
</DataTemplate>
</toolkit:MapItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
</toolkit:MapItemsControl>
</toolkit:MapExtensions.Children>
</maps:Map>
</Grid>

Initially, the map control's visibility is set to Collapsed so that it can be shown when required. MapExtensions is an extension provided by the Windows Phone Toolkit to draw UI controls on a map. MapExtensions has a Children property which will hold the items to be shown on map. We are setting a MapItemsControl to the Children property which eventually will have lots of items to be displayed. While using the Pushpin control, we are making use of Binding method to bind the values of our geo-coordinates and information.

[edit] Code Behind

[edit] JSON Parsing

Following file has been used for JSON parsing.

namespace PlacesNearYou.Data
{
[DataContract]
public class Place
{
[DataMember(Name = "summary")]
public string Summary { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "distance")]
public string Distance { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "rank")]
public string Rank { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "title")]
public string Title { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "wikipediaUrl")]
public string WikipediaUrl { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "elevation")]
public string Elevation { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "lng")]
public string Longitude { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "feature")]
public string Feature { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "lang")]
public string Langauge { get; set; }
?
[DataMember(Name = "lat")]
public string Latitude { get; set; }
}
}

Another file used for JSON parsing has following declaration:

namespace PlacesNearYou.Data
{
[DataContract]
public class PlacesList
{
[DataMember(Name = "geonames")]
public List<Place> PlaceList { get; set; }
}
}

[edit] Creating structure for Binding

Following file has been used.

namespace PlaceToMap.Data
{
public class PlaceToMap
{
public GeoCoordinate Coordinate { get; set; }
public string Info { get; set; }
}
}

[edit] Making Server Request

We will start with finding the current location of the phone. For that, we'll make use of GeoCoordinateWatcher API as explained in this article. After successfully fetching the current location of the device (in terms of latitude and longitude), we will start a HTTP request for the GeoNames API. The code snippet is shown below.

    private void startGeoNamesAPICall()
{
try
{
HttpWebRequest httpReq = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create(new Uri(AppConstants.baseUri + "&lat=" + currentLatitude + "&lng=" + currentLongitude + "&username=" + AppConstants.strUserName + "&radius=" + AppConstants.strDefaultRadiusForWikiAPI + "&maxRows=" + AppConstants.strDefaultResultRowsForWikiAPI));
httpReq.BeginGetResponse(HTTPWebRequestCallBack, httpReq);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);
}
}

As shown above, we are passing a few parameters along with the base URL. These parameters are:

  • Our own latitude
  • Our longitude
  • The user name (on behalf of which request is made- its compulsory to provide a registered user name). The username can be registered here. For more info on username, you may check this link.
  • Radius - to determine in how much radius searching will be performed
  • Maximum Rows - how many rows are required as max in the result

[edit] Parsing the response

The code snippet to handle response is shown below.

 private void HTTPWebRequestCallBack(IAsyncResult result)
{
string strResponse = "";
?
try
{
Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() =>
{
try
{
HttpWebRequest httpRequest = (HttpWebRequest)result.AsyncState;
WebResponse response = httpRequest.EndGetResponse(result);
Stream stream = response.GetResponseStream();
StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(stream);
strResponse = reader.ReadToEnd();
?
parseResponseData(strResponse);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);
}
});
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);
}
}

After converting the WebResponse type data into String, we need to parse it now as it is still in the JSON format. the code snippet for parsing is:

 private void parseResponseData(String aResponse)
{
placesListObj = new PlacesList();
?
MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(aResponse));
DataContractJsonSerializer ser = new DataContractJsonSerializer(placesListObj.GetType());
placesListObj = ser.ReadObject(ms) as PlacesList;
ms.Close();
?
// updating UI
if (placesListObj != null)
{
updateMap(placesListObj);
}
}

[edit] Drawing pushpins on map

In case parsing is done successfully and we've got at least a single record in response, we will show its information on the map using Pushpin(s).

 private void updateMap(PlacesList aWiKIAPIResponse)
{
int totalRecords = aWiKIAPIResponse.PlaceList.Count();
mapControl.Visibility = System.Windows.Visibility.Visible;
?

We are mapping all the Place type objects into PlaceToMap type objects as we are using Binding method to bind the attribute values in the map control. After the conversion, we are getting a reference of the Children property of MapExtensions class. From the children object, we are finding the first or the default type, in our case it is MapItemsControl. Once we found its reference, we are setting it to point towards our placeToMapObjs object. Lastly, we are setting the map control's view as our current location and having a zoom level 14.
