Family, Parenting, Reviews, and Giveaways - The Attic Girl ...

I have never been a huge fan of salty soft pretzels, but the guys in my family love them. ?My hubby often will buy a warm pretzel as a treat when we're out and about at the mall or running errands. ? ?But it can get expensive to buy them individually at snack stands. ?When he was at a football game just recently, they were asking $.50 just for a small container of cheese sauce to go with a $3.50 pretzel. ?Youch!

soft pretzels, snacksLuckily, there's an easy more wallet-friendly way to get that warm pretzel goodness right at home with SUPERPRETZEL. ?J and J Snack foods has made a delicious addition to their pretzel line: ?SuperPretzel Sweet Cinnamon.
snacks, soft pretzels
These come in a box of 6 so it easily feeds the four of us. Definitely a plus for a mom on a budget!

As I said, I don't usually eat pretzels. ?I don't like the saltiness of them. ?But when I heard that these had cinnamon, I figured I'd give them a try along with the guys.

These are really simple to prepare. ?Take them out of the freezer and either bake them in your toaster oven or regular oven at 400 for 5-6 minutes. ?(You can microwave them too but I prefer them baked because I like the outside crisper) ?You can moisten them with a little water or use a spray butter/margarine. ?Then sprinkle on the cinnamon included in the box. ? If you're making just a few pretzels and not the whole box, you can store your cinnamon in a ziplock bag. ? ? (The bag is a pretty good size)

I was pleasantly surprised at how good these taste! ?There's no salty flavor to them; they are sweet and remind me of a cinnamon bread stick. ?My hubby and son both loved them and ate 2 each. ?Hubby said he used to like to heat up pretzels fast in the microwave, but he likes the taste of them baked even more. ??I love how easy and quick they are to make!

soft pretzels, snackssnacks, soft pretzelsNot just for a snack or dessert, cinnamon pretzels will make a nummy breakfast or lunch choice too. ?You can eat them plain, topped with cinnamon sugar, dunk them in icing or chocolate sauce, or add to the side of some delicious ice cream. ?There are so many choices! ? I can't wait to experiment with different items to dip them in.

You can go to?http://wwww.superpretzel.com/sweetcinnamon/recipe.html for more fun recipe ideas.

Should the Pope follow someone on Twitter other than himself?

"He won't follow anyone for now," says one adviser. "He will be followed."

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday announced that he had joined Twitter, part of a campaign by the leader of the Roman Catholic Church to better connect with his 1.2-billion-strong flock. Benedict chose the handle @pontifex ? Latin for "pontiff" ? and is already being followed by more than 240,000 people. But Benedict isn't exactly returning the love: He is following only seven other Twitter accounts, all of which are foreign-language versions of himself in which he?speaks?in different tongues.

Of course, everyone knows the Pope himself probably won't be signing on to Twitter and keeping up with the latest from the Biebs. (After the pope physically clicks "send" on his first tweet on Dec. 12, his staff members will be the ones sending out Pope-approved messages.) But if the whole point of the exercise is to recognize a social media connection with his religious followers, shouldn't he at least follow (and thus receive messages from) someone other than himself? "Too many celebrities and leaders on Twitter make the mistake of using it only as a transmission system without following any other users," says Joshua Keating at Foreign Policy. "Benedict could start with other religious leaders, or political figures like Barack Obama and David Cameron."

Indeed, @barackobama follows nearly 670,000 people, while @whitehouse follows 168 (mostly government departments, which means the different parts of the executive branch could technically communicate with each over Twitter). But clearly, the term "follow" seems potentially problematic for a religious leader. "He won't follow anyone for now," said Greg Burke, a communications adviser to the Pope. "He will be followed." In fact, the Dalai Lama, a frequent Tweeter, follows exactly zero people. And if Benedict were to follow members of his own church, he could bruise the feelings of those who were excluded. "If he follows a cardinal, than why not an archbishop?" said Burke. "You can see where it could get tricky."

And while the Pope is brand new to social media, he is not entirely unfamiliar with its pitfalls. "In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered 'a great opportunity,'" says Phillip Pullella at Reuters, "but warned of the risks of depersonalization, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones." On second thought, perhaps Benedict knows exactly what he's doing.

Nigeria scraps stamp duty, VAT on share trades

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's finance ministry has scrapped stamp duties and VAT on stock market transaction fees, which between them come to 12 percent in some cases, seeking to boost capital markets, the minister said on Monday.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also said the government had written off around 22.6 billion naira in margin loans owed by stock brokers, after a financial crisis in 2009 triggered a state-backed bailout.

"These constitute a major disincentive to invest in the Nigerian capital market," she said, announcing the removal of duties and tax.

A 2009 crisis nearly led to the collapse of nine banks and prompted the central bank to intervene with a $4 billion bailout package. The stock market plunged 60 percent in the one year. But this year, it has been one of the world's best performing.

A state-backed "bad bank", AMCON, relieved them of their non-performing loans and nationalised three of the banks. The rescue left it nominally owed hundreds of billions of naira by various firms, including 84 stock brokers.

"This forbearance (on debt) will be accompanied with sanctions to discourage excessive borrowing behaviour by capital market operators in the future," Okonjo-Iweala said.

These included full disclosure to the regulator of any deals worth more than 25 million naira, no debt financing of more than 100 percent of capital and forbidding traders under debt relief from taking positions on their own accounts for at least a year.

Great Self Improvement Advice Anyone Can Use - Empower Network

Many people can aid you on the road to self-discovery. Friends can help you, along with many good teachers and professionals who will explain your feelings and analyze your thoughts.

Always retain your sense of humility. Compared to the immense universe we are really very small. No single individual is omniscient, yet each individual possesses some grain of unique and valuable knowledge. Keep this in mind and open yourself to the ability to learn from others. If you?re open-minded, you?ll begin learning more from people.

You have to care for yourself before you can start taking care of others. No matter what point you are in on your journey, you should always take time to breathe.

When working on your self improvement, it is often helpful to see what others have done. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced. Reading about the lessons they have learned will have a positive impact on your own personal development.

Many people struggle with personal development because their goals are difficult to figure out or just too vague. Make sure that your goals are very specific. A specific goal will often achieve the desired results.

Leaders are humble, though powerful and strict too. You must be resolute but compassionate if you want to lead. Also, recall what it is like to serve someone. A good leader is virtuous and full of integrity, something you need in order to be successful.

You may have heard that listening is just as important as speaking. This truth applies even more to those who are making a concentrated effort to develop themselves on a personal level. Ensure you are taking time to listen to yourself. Make sure you always pay attention to what your inner voice is telling you, so you can properly understand and meet your needs, which is essential if you want to improve yourself as a person.

The people in your life should have similar interests. Like-minded people will help strengthen your resolve while reinforcing positive attitudes.

Getting and staying healthy is one of the most important parts of personal development. If you want to build healthy habits, you need to be motivated to eat better and exercise more. Put health at the pinnacle of your self improvement plan to feel your best and to be more successful with all of your other life goals.

You should know the values that bear importance to you prior to planning a personal development program. Focus on those areas first to make the positive changes that are most important to your happiness. Focus on what makes you a happier person and what needs to be improved. Doing this will help you make changes throughout your life that can benefit you.

Your physical well-being and mental health are connected. Partake in regular exercise and stick to a nutritious diet. Remember that a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind.

The first step in changing is making a decision to change. Unless you understand and accept the fact that it will require change, personal growth will be almost impossible for you to achieve.

You can try writing yourself a motivational speech. Get a postcard and fill it with positives about yourself, your personality and your accomplishments. Have it with you at all times, and look at it when you want some inspiration. You can even record yourself reading it aloud and listen to it often. Why?

When you are feeling angry, take time out and slowly count to 10 prior to saying anything. Breath deeply and imagine a calming scene. If you stay calm and composed, you are more likely to make the best out of a bad situation.

It is best if you know yourself more than others do. Treat yourself as you would treat a dear friend?generously, kindly and honestly.

CindyWaitt.com ? Blog Archive ? Do Long Distance Relationships ...

December 3rd, 2012

Get on the damn train, will you?

One of the best long distance romance scenes ever was 1944?s ?Since You Went Away? where Jennifer Jones runs alongside her boyfriend?s train saying over and over ?I love you, darling, ?I love you darling?. ?A close second was when Richard Dreyfus?proves to Marcia Mason he IS actually going to return to her in ?The Goodbye Girl?. ?And since I?ve now convinced you I don?t see much on screen from this millennium, a third would be the train scene from Reds when Warren Beatty, (any scene with Warren works for me, actually), finally reunites with Diane Keaton as all hell is breaking loose in post revolutionary Russia.

So, do they work? ?I have no idea. ?I?ve been in two. ?One didn?t work. ?There was kind of an OCEAN between us. ?One did. ?We?re married. ?Long distance for me, however, whatever the outcome, actually? sucked. ?But I was still curious to know how others navigated the road map, both literally and figuratively, so here?s what I found out.

1)There?s a lot of it going on, particularly among the young. ?From USA today? 2010?.?One recent study, in the journal?Communication Research, finds that as many as half of college students are in long-distance relationships, ?and up to 75% will be at some point.? ?That makes sense. ?They?re young, they don?t know where they want to live or land. ?Another study, by Dr. Greg Gulcher, asserts the following.Their number jumped 30%, to 3.6 million, from 2000 to 2005.

2). The Long Distance Relationship crowd is actually kind of a movement. In fact, some participants actually call themselves ?LDR?s?. ?Sounds like a religion. ?There are websites and stuff. ?That also makes sense. ?When you are in one, you need a website to consult, trust me.

3)It?s a bit of a cottage industry. There is a scientific place, I think it?s virtual, run by the aforementioned Dr. Gulcher, called, ?The Center for the Study of Long Distance Relationships?. ?How cool would that job be? ?Dr. Gulcher wrote a book in 2003 about it. ?So did a whole bunch of other people. ?Here?s a few?.?The Long Distance Relationship Guide? by Carolyn Tiger looks interesting. ?There?s a guy named Chris Bell who added a word to that title and calls his book ?The Long Distance Relationship Survival Guide?. ?My personal favorite is ?The Complete Idiot?s Guide to Long Distance Relationships? by Seetha Narayan.

4)You can?t get a definitive answer on success rates but a few are saying that the myth of the 99% failure rate is just that. ??Mary Carole Pistole, an associate professor at ?Purdue University found that long-distance relationships can actually be?more?stable and last longer than close ones.

5) ?One study says they aren?t that different from non LDR?s ( I just used that because it?s shorter). ?Our friend Dr. Gulcher found the following??while 37% of long distance couples split up in the first 3 months of the relationship compared to regular 21%, if the relationship can last, only 8% break up after the first year in comparison to 25% of traditional relationships. ? ?Learned something new there. ?Where was this guy when I needed him?

I?m confused. ?So in order to make this more simple, and having been there, I?ll give you my pro?s and con?s of the long distance love.

PRO-

1) THEY CAN BE REALLY, REALLY ROMANTIC. ?My friend and I across the pond had a tendency to meet in romantic places like London, Stonehenge and Glastonbury. ?The scene always heightens the experience. ?I am however, firmly convinced that three weeks in Merrill, Iowa would have done us in. (I?m not picking on Merrill, Iowa, I live in Iowa, it?s a nice little town but, you know you?d have to be more creative in a town of 755..)

2) THE TRAIN SCENE AND ALL THAT.?Sometimes the goodbyes are even better than the hellos in terms of romantic pathos. Yum.

3) THIS IS BIG. You have time to lose weight, get some botox, and just generally spiff up in between trysts. ?That?s if you are a bit shallow and all this means alot, and my pond friend was a bit shallow. ?He admitted it. Ok, sometimes I?m shallow too, maybe we would have made a good pair, but I think not.

4) THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE DOING HALF THE TIME. ?This is good, because if you?re not ready, and pond guy and I weren?t ready, you can still explore other territory close by.

5) I CAN?T THINK OF REASON FIVE. ?Shouldn?t lists like these always be five or ten? ?There just wasn?t anything else good I could say about the long distance route.

CON-

1) This is if ?they are the one, which my husband was?YOU DON?T LIVE IN THE SAME PLACE. ?

2) EVEN IF THE RELATIONSHIP WORKS OUT, THE COMPROMISE CAN BE TOUGH.? I got lucky. ?My husband was raised in Manhattan, and lived in Austin, Texas for a lot of years. ?He?d done really big and medium big cities and Iowa sounded good. ?When I found myself single in smaller city Iowa, at 52 (I want you to picture this scenario, ok?), I knew that the pool here was a bit limited, so I?d have to import someone. ?So I did.

3)IF YOU GO TOO LONG WITHOUT SEEING EACH OTHER, YOU CAN ACTUALLY START AGING TO THE POINT THAT THEY NOTICE.? My same time next year or two person may have noticed my gradual physical deterioration. ?In fact, I?m certain he did. ?He?s shallow.

4) SEE NUMBER FOUR ABOVE, ONLY REVERSE IT. ?? If they are ?the one?, you feel a bit better if you have some idea about where and with whom they spend their time. ?A lot better.

5)YOU DON?T LIVE IN THE SAME PLACE. ?This is not a long typo.

In any case, my long distance relationship turned out to be the best thing I ever started, but I like the fact that he?s now in the next room and is about to walk in and say, ?Whatcha writing, darlin??. ?And I?ll say to him, ?I?m writing about the fact that I?d still be madly in love with you even after three weeks in Merrill, Iowa.?

Buffalo Limo Transportation - Bring Back The Romance Of Road ...

Amongst all the forms of transport when you travel by road you can really enjoy being close to nature. If you are in a car, you can if you wish, stop and admire a particularly breathtaking view when you see one. Yet in recent times a lot of romance has gone out of road travel. One reason is that there is so much to do and see that we consider it important only to get to the destination and the journey there is just an impatient wait.

This happens even though modern life has made doing many things much easier than it was in the past we have not increased the amount of time we spend relaxing. Instead usually we try to have more interests and try to fit even more activity in our every day lives. And so when we are on the road getting from one place to another, instead of enjoying the beautiful countryside that we pass through we are focused on getting to the destination and the things that would follow.

But ask a wise person and you will know that the journey is an important as getting there. And a great way to enjoy a road journey is in a limo when you do not have to drive yourself. This is particularly true when you are traveling in one of the most beautiful regions of the world as is the case when you travel by a limo around the Buffalo area. People come there from all over the world to visit the area for its extraordinary beauty which extends much beyond the famous Niagara Falls.

A ride in a limo is in plush comfort and in privacy. You can talk with your friends and colleagues as some of the most beautiful natural scenery flies past your car's window. And if you are a wine lover you can include some wine tasting on the way. Once you set your heart to it you will find out that a Buffalo limo ride is as much a high point of your holiday in the area as are some of the big attractions there.

Fedex hiking ground shipping rates almost 5% in 2013

16 hrs.

FedEx Corp , the No. 2 U.S. package-delivery company, said on Friday it will raise its average rates for ground shipments and home deliveries by 4.9 percent beginning in January.

The increase reflects a 5.9 percent raise in published rates at FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery, offset by a lower fuel surcharge.

The move comes two weeks after larger rival United Parcel Service Inc disclosed a 4.9 percent hike for its 2013 shipping charges.

Results of both companies in recent months have been pinched by an uncertain global economy, which has ?eaten into the overall volume of goods being shipped and caused customers to choose less expensive shipping methods.

FedEx next month is scheduled to report results for its third fiscal quarter, with analysts braced for a 10 percent drop in per share earnings, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.?

Gulf of Mexico clean-up makes 2010 spill 52-times more toxic; Mixing oil with dispersant increased toxicity to ecosystems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? If the 4.9 million barrels of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the 2010 Deep Water Horizon spill was a ecological disaster, the two million gallons of dispersant used to clean it up apparently made it even worse -- 52-times more toxic. That's according to new research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes (UAA), Mexico.

The study found that mixing the dispersant with oil increased toxicity of the mixture up to 52-fold over the oil alone. In toxicity tests in the lab, the mixture's effects increased mortality of rotifers, a microscopic grazing animal at the base of the Gulf's food web. The findings are published online by the journal Environmental Pollution and will appear in the February 2013 print edition.

Using oil from the Deep Water Horizon spill and Corexit, the dispersant required by the Environmental Protection Agency for clean up, the researchers tested toxicity of oil, dispersant and mixtures on five strains of rotifers. Rotifers have long been used by ecotoxicologists to assess toxicity in marine waters because of their fast response time, ease of use in tests and sensitivity to toxicants. In addition to causing mortality in adult rotifers, as little as 2.6 percent of the oil-dispersant mixture inhibited rotifer egg hatching by 50 percent. Inhibition of rotifer egg hatching from the sediments is important because these eggs hatch into rotifers each spring, reproduce in the water column, and provide food for baby fish, shrimp and crabs in estuaries.

"Dispersants are preapproved to help clean up oil spills and are widely used during disasters," said UAA's Roberto-Rico Martinez, who led the study. "But we have a poor understanding of their toxicity. Our study indicates the increase in toxicity may have been greatly underestimated following the Macondo well explosion."

Martinez performed the research while he was a Fulbright Fellow at Georgia Tech in the lab of School of Biology Professor Terry Snell. They hope that the study will encourage more scientists to investigate how oil and dispersants impact marine food webs and lead to improved management of future oil spills.

"What remains to be determined is whether the benefits of dispersing the oil by using Corexit are outweighed by the substantial increase in toxicity of the mixture," said Snell, chair of the School of Biology. "Perhaps we should allow the oil to naturally disperse. It might take longer, but it would have less toxic impact on marine ecosystems."
