'Walking Dead's' best scenes go beyond gore

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Rotting zombies. Gushing blood. Spilled guts. Crushed brains.?AMC's hit drama "The Walking Dead" has these things in spades, but the show isn't just about the gory scenes featuring the undead and unlucky humans. Many of "Walking Dead's" best moments are emotional ones among the survivors, whether Rick is crying tears of joy, Carol is screaming in despair or Daryl is quietly singing to an infant.

As the series progresses, "The Walking Dead" has presented more and more of these moving scenes as it moves closer to Sunday's midseason finale, which will likely feature more emotional moments of its own. The promo for episode eight teases the showdown between Rick's gang of survivors and The Governor and his Woodbury thugs, which means brothers Merle and Daryl will find themselves on opposite teams, and Andrea will (unknowingly) take aim at her long-lost pals.

But before that action kicks off, take a few minutes to revisit some of the emotional moments the show has already offered:

Wikileaks suspect chokes up at hearing

PFC Bradley Manning choked back tears during a second day of testimony at a hearing before his military trial as he claimed he didn't tell his family about the conditions of his confinement at the Marine brig at Quantico, Va., because he did not want them to worry.

He also expressed concern that doing so could lead to an end to visiting privileges for his family.

This week's pre-trial hearing at Fort Meade, Md., outside of Washington, D.C., was focused only on Manning's nine-month confinement at the Marine brig at Quantico. Details about the hundreds of thousands of classified documents Manning is alleged to have leaked to Wikileaks will not be discussed until his trial, which is scheduled to get underway on Jan. 28.

On Friday, Army prosecutors asked Manning why he had not availed himself of multiple opportunities to complain about the Maximum Custody and Prevention of Injury status he experienced during his nine-month stay at Quantico in 2010-2011.

Army prosecutor Maj. Ashden Fein pointed to weekly detailed forms with his Army supervisors, where Manning routinely categorized the guards and facilities at the brig as "very professional." The forms did not detail any of the maximum security conditions Manning talked about on Thursday, the first time he has spoken publicly during his almost two-and-a-half years in pre-trial detention.

Fein also read through transcripts of audio recordings made during the visits to the brig by Manning's family and friends, when he did not complain about the circumstances of his detention to those closest to him.

In one exchange six weeks after his arrival at Quantico, Manning said of his treatment at the brig, "it's pretty good, it's not bad, it's not Oz" - a reference to the TV show centered around a maximum security prison.

Manning did not challenge any of Fein's quotes and concurred with his assessment that he "kept reassuring others you were OK."

Manning told Fein that he knew that his conversations were being recorded and, "I wasn't going to talk to anyone in recording circumstances."

Later, Manning choked back tears and his face grew red when he explained further to his attorney, David Coombs, that, "I didn't want my family to be worried about my conditions."

He added, "I didn't want to bring it up. I didn't want them to have to experience much more of that."

Manning's brief show of emotion was in contrast to the upbeat, self-assured composure he maintained through two days of testimony.

The former Army intelligence analyst explained that he was concerned brig officials might end his family's visits if he said something wrong.

"It was understood we weren't supposed to talk about what was going inside the facility? to visitors for both security ? and transport issues," he said. " I didn't want to get into the details because I figured that would be a good reason to end those for security reasons."

In testimony on Thursday, Manning admitted to suicidal thoughts when he was detained in Kuwait and acknowledged having fashioned a noose from a bed sheet. On Friday, prosecutors produced the peach-colored noose and Manning confirmed it was the one he had made.

Manning's state of mind when he was transferred from Kuwait to Quantico in July, 2010 had a major impact on the rest of his detention there. Required to fill out a questionnaire when he arrived at Quantico, Manning said he sarcastically wrote, "always planning, never acting," when asked if he ever had suicidal thoughts.

He said he'd forgotten about the entry when brig staff raised it with him at a meeting on Jan. 21, 2011, when he was seeking a downgrade from the Prevention of Injury status he had been in since arriving from Kuwait.

But Fein asked how that could be possible given that three days before he had openly spoken about the written comments with brig officials during an incident that led to his being placed on suicide risk watch.

Fein then described how Manning's awareness of the comments had been seen in videos played Thursday by Manning's attorney.

A sheepish Manning told Fein, "I'd forgotten about that."

"In that three-day period you'd forgotten about it?" asked Fein.

"Yes," said Manning.

DNP Japan unveils prototype of its first maglev train, promises 311 mph speeds

More than a year after the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) received construction approval to get going on its maglev railways, it has finally unveiled a Series L0 prototype that would put its current bullet train system to shame. Designed to travel at 311 mph, a single one of these high-speed marvels is designed to carry about 16 carriages, which translates to about 1,000 commuters. While Japanese travelers already enjoy a speedy 90-minute trip from Tokyo to Nagoya, this new maglev system promises to cut that journey to just 40 minutes. Announced nearly five years ago, the project has since been extended to include an Osaka-Tokyo leg and will cost around nine trillion yen (approximately $112 billion) when all is said and done. Don't pack your bags just yet though; the maglev's Nagoya rail isn't scheduled to go live until 2027, and the boarding call for Osaka isn't until 2045. Of course, if you need to ride electromagnetic rails now, there's always China's Shanghai Transrapid, which has been ferrying passengers at around 501km/h (311mph) since 2004 -- it's even planning a whopping 1,000 km/h vacuum-tube maglev train in just a year or so. Of course, those of us on the other end of the Pacific are still waiting for that long-delayed California-Nevada maglev project to work out. Sigh.

China Builds Cheaper GPS by broadcast the signals from the ...

Technology Review - There are many Global Positioning systems
The US has the global positioning satellite system, Russia has GLONASS, Europe hopes to have Galileo operational by 2020 and China has a similar timescale for its COMPASS system. Even Japan and India are getting in on the act with QZSS, the Quasi Zenith Satellite System of Japan, and the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System or IRNSS.

The GPS system alone is estimated to have cost $1.5 billion in 2012 alone. A cheaper idea is to transmit the highly accurate time signals from the ground and simply route them through geostationary satellites that are already in orbit. Receivers can then triangulate their position in the same way. That's much easier and cheaper since it uses existing communications infrastructure

China tested this idea in 2005 using communications satellites to provide positioning signals for several Chinese cities.

There is a problem, however. Geostationary satellites sit exactly in the equatorial plane so their signals can only give an east-west position. To get a north-south position requires satellites above and below the equatorial plane.

Arxiv - The Principle of Navigation Constellation Composed of SIGSO Communication Satellites
The Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS), a navigation system based on GEO communication satellites, was developed in 2002 by astronomers at Chinese Academy of Sciences. Extensive positioning experiments of CAPS have been performed since 2005. On the basis of CAPS, this paper studies the principle of navigation constellation composed of Slightly Inclined Geostationary Orbit (SIGSO) communication satellites. SIGSO satellites are derived from end-of-life Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellites under inclined orbit operation. Considering the abundant frequency resources of SIGSO satellites, multi-frequency observations could be conducted to enhance the precision of pseudorange measurements and ameliorate the positioning performence. The constellation composed of two GEO satellites and four SIGSO satellites with inclination of 5 degrees can provide the most territory of China with 24-hour maximum PDOP less than 42. With synthetic utilization of the truncated precise (TP) code and physical augmentation factor in four frequencies, navigation system with this constellation is expected to obtain comparable positioning performance with that of coarse acquisition code of GPS. When the new approach of code-carrier phase combinations is adopted, the system has potential to possess commensurate accuracy of precise code in GPS. Additionally, the copious frequency resources can also be used to develop new anti-interference techniques and integrate navigation and communication
.

11 page paper

Due to a variety of perturbations, end-of-life GEO communication satellites will drift to SIGSO satellites under inclined orbit operation. SIGSO satellites are favorable to be deployed in navigation constellation to achieve 3D positioning. When SIGSO satellites have relatively large inclination angles (e.g., 5? ) and four-frequency PAFP is enforced, the system composed of SIGSO communication satellites is capable to obtain approximately equal positioning performance of C/A code in GPS. If the new approach of code-carrier phase combinations with three frequencies is further employed, the positioning accuracy will be enhanced remarkably and would be as good as that of GPS P code.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Moderate GOP senator expresses concerns about Rice

UN Ambassador Susan Rice arrives for a meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, with Sen. Susan Collins, R- Maine and Sen. (AP) ? A moderate Republican senator crucial to any White House hopes of getting U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice confirmed as secretary of state said Wednesday that there are still lingering unanswered questions about the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya.

Emerging from a 95-minute, closed-door meeting with Rice, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said she would need more information before she could consider backing the ambassador if President Barack Obama tapped her to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

At issue is Rice's much-maligned explanation for the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. In a series of talk show appearances, Rice blamed the attack on a spontaneous demonstration to an anti-Muslim video rather than terrorism.

"I still have many questions that remain unanswered," Collins told reporters after the meeting. "I continue to be troubled by the fact that the U.N. ambassador decided to play what was essentially a political role at the height of the contentious presidential election campaign by agreeing to go on the Sunday shows to present the administration's position."

Collins stopped short of saying she would try to block a nomination as Sens. Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte have said they would do.

But in a clear message to the White House, Collins said that Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., would have a smooth path to confirmation if Obama chose him over Rice for the State Department job.

In back-to-back meetings, Rice met with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Corker declined to say whether he would support Rice or not, but was highly critical of the intelligence apparatus and the administration.

"The whole issue of Benghazi has been a tawdry affair," Corker told reporters after his 90-minute session with Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell.

Pressed on a possible nomination, Corker said he will decide when Obama announces his choice, but he made it clear that the president should carefully weigh the decision.

"I would just ask that the president step back away from all of the buzz around this particular situation, take a deep breath and decide who is the best secretary of state for our country," Corker said.

The meetings with Collins and Corker marked the second straight day of private sessions for Rice as she tries to quell the uproar over her initial assessment of the Benghazi raid. Rice answered questions Tuesday from Sens. John McCain, Graham and Ayotte about her explanations about the cause of the September attack.

At the hour-plus, closed-door session, Rice conceded that her initial account was wrong, but she insisted she had not been trying to mislead the American people when she made her comments five days later.

"The talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: There was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi," Rice said in a statement after the meeting. "While we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case the intelligence assessment has evolved."

She was joined in the meeting by Acting CIA Director Michael Morell.

Rice failed Tuesday to mollify the three senators ? her most outspoken critics ? and they indicated they would try to block her nomination.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate," McCain told reporters after a session with Rice that he described as candid.

Said Graham, "Bottom line, I'm more disturbed now than I was before that 16 Sept. explanation." He said in a later interview that Rice went "far beyond the flawed talking points" and should be held accountable.

"I'm more troubled today," said Ayotte, who argued that it was clear in the days after the attack that it was terrorism and not a spontaneous demonstration.

Rice's unusual visit to Capitol Hill ? typically only nominees meet privately with lawmakers ? reflects the Obama administration's campaign for Rice as Clinton's replacement against some strenuous GOP opposition.

The White House remained defiant in its support for Rice, arguing that she was relying on an assessment from the intelligence community and had no responsibility in compiling the information on the cause of the attack. It dismissed what it characterized as a fixation on her national television appearances five days after the raid.

"The focus on, some might say, obsession on comments made on Sunday shows seems to me, and to many, to be misplaced," Obama spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a White House briefing.

House Democrats, including female members of the Congressional Black Caucus, have suggested that the GOP opposition to Rice is sexist and racist. Senate Democrats, who will increase their advantage to 55-45 in the next Congress, said Rice could win confirmation if Republicans recognize the unfairness of penalizing her for the intelligence community's talking points.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters "it is so unfair to hold her responsible for something that she didn't produce and which the intelligence community has specifically stood by."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called the attacks against Rice by some Republican senators "outrageous and utterly unmoored from facts and reality."

The Associated Press Bans Homophobia

Margie J. Phelps protests outside Manhattan's City Clerk's Office. Margie J. Phelps protests outside Manhattan's City Clerk's Office as same-sex couples wait to marry in July 2011

The Associated Press announced this week that its new stylebook would bar the use of the word homophobia in political or social contexts (along with Islamophobia and ethnic cleansing). AP Deputy Standards Editor Dave Minthorn told Politico that the term is ?just off the mark? and ?seems inaccurate??oddly amorphous phrases for a standards editor. ?We want to be precise and accurate and neutral in our phrasing,? he said.

If that?s true, let?s hope the AP doesn?t define ?political and social contexts? as broadly as it explains its style updates. Applying homophobia more precisely is a good idea, but banning it outright is a mistake.

The AP, whose guidelines set news industry standards, defines phobia as an ?irrational, uncontrollable fear, often a form of mental illness.? But the ?mental illness? part is surely too literal?no one accuses arachnophobes of needing an asylum. The term homophobia was first used in the 1960s when psychologists began to notice how vehement their own colleagues? reactions were to gay people?far more irrational, it seemed, than feelings around other outsider groups. ?They had no argument, just repugnance,? says George Weinberg, a clinical psychologist who popularized the term in a 1972 book and opposes the AP?s move to drop the word. ?They felt this way even about their own children. I realized this thing is deeply emotional and is based on fear.? As Weinberg and others used it, the term meant a dread or fear of close contact with gay people and a strong discomfort with homosexuality.

In those days, there was little tolerance for research on why people?s rationality broke down when it came to homosexuality. But we now know a lot more than we did then about anti-gay bias and the extent to which it is, in fact, rooted in irrational fear. Some of this knowledge has come simply because we?ve learned how seldom humans consult their rational brains about anything, especially sex. But this is particularly true not only when it comes to pleasure but also fear.

Neuroscientists have shown that the pathway of the brain?s fear response sidesteps the higher brain functions on its way to the fear-processing center. This helps explain a famous story in which a man entered a convenience store and instantly walked out, feeling fear but having no idea why; moments later a policeman entered the store and was shot. The two men had interrupted an armed robbery, but the lucky one who left in time had processed a threat in his brain?s fear center and made the snap decision to leave before his rational brain could even catch up.

In this case, it was the right decision. That?s because our brains have evolved to give us a fight-or-flight mechanism that often saves us from harm before our rational minds?which can be more helpful for long-range planning?do the job. But this same system can lead us astray. Fear instincts that may be rational in one instant or context are not perfectly attuned to others, and one result of irrational fear is bias. Research now suggests that instinctive responses of fear and disgust help explain prejudice, especially negative feelings about homosexuality, which can trigger people?s disgust sensitivities?also designed by evolution to keep us safe, in this case from dangers to our health.

Here?s how this works: People come to associate a particular group of outsiders with the things that trigger their primary disgust sensitivities?symbols of our mortality and animalism such as waste and various bodily fluids. This mental link gives rise to a layer of ?secondary disgust??beliefs, reinforced through a cultural narrative, that the group carries with it the same threats of danger and disease as do sources of primary disgust, like tainted blood or feces. This is why many of the same people want to keep both gays and immigrants at bay?they have a heightened fear of people they believe spend their time in distant or walled-off places mixing their dangerous fluids together and threatening to spread them to others with deadly force. Such a fear doesn?t have to be conscious to be this specific. Nor is it always wrong. American Indians were right to fear white settlers, whether or not they knew the precise nature of the threat. As it turned out, Europeans decimated Native Americans through a deadly combination of just what their brains probably feared most: murder, poaching, and the spread of disease.

Tablets 2012: Even with competition, iPad hangs onto crown

4 hrs.

Non-iPads from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others are flooding the market, bringing more diverse experiences, often at better prices than the iPad and its little sibling, the iPad Mini.

Doesn?t matter. Odds are, you?ll still ask Santa for an Apple tablet. And new research suggests Apple iPads large and small will dominate this rapidly growing business, at least through 2013.

OK OK, you're thinking, "Thanks for the newsflash, fanboy." But seriously, in a universe where shoppers operate on cold logic and ever-tightening budgets, the iPad should fall under the wheels of Android any minute now, the same thing that happened with smartphones. So how does Apple maintain its grip?

It's not design or ease of use. Although they surely contribute to customer loyalty, they're not enormous differentiators any more. (Don?t believe me? Ask Apple?s patent lawyers.)

So what?s the answer? Tablets aren?t smartphones and they?re not PCs. While the Android camp waited for a bounce?from the successful phone business, and Microsoft and the computer vendors groped for a bridge between PCs and tablets, Apple made this middle ground the iPad's kingdom.

Heated competition
In the fall of 2011, when Amazon and Barnes & Noble axed their tablet prices down to under $200, Apple held its $499 starting point.

Logic suggested that the iPad would lose its lead, or at least, its majority. The non-Apple upstarts did see spikes in shipments over the 2011 holiday quarter, according to NPD DisplaySearch, a top global research firm. But by mid-2012, Apple was once again shipping over two thirds of the world?s tablets.

This fall, the non-iPads redoubled their attack. Asus and Samsung teamed up with Google to create Nexus-branded 7-inch and 10-inch tablets (respectively). Amazon multiplied its Kindle Fire by three, and dropped the entry-level 7-inch tablet's price down to $159. Barnes & Noble launched a video service and put out a 9-inch tablet at the unheard-of price of $269.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, the sleeping giant, finally addressed the bite iPad is taking out of PC sales by launching its own tablet. Or is it a PC? Whatever it is ? and believe me, the debate still rages ? the $499 Surface RT with its clever keyboard add-on and its full version of Microsoft Office was built to challenge the notion that an iPad can satisfy most computerly needs.

Apple's response to the increased competition made sense ... sort of. It jacked up the specs on its flagship 9.7-inch tablet, and addressed the growing interest in 7-inch tablets by popping out the iPad Mini, a 7.9-inch model. But Apple priced the Mini at $329 ? well above devices from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. And the screen on the Mini doesn't measure up, resolution-wise, to those same cheaper competitors.

Again, doesn?t matter.

Apple ? or at least, the 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch displays unique to Apple ? will account for two thirds of tablets shipped through 2013, according to a forecast from NPD DisplaySearch, which uses research from over 140 display component manufacturers around the globe.

A recent study from Nielsen tells a similar story, at least for kids writing letters to Santa. Nearly half of surveyed U.S. kids between the ages of 6 and 12 want an iPad, and 36 percent want an iPad Mini. Even respondents age 13 and up said the iPad was No. 1. (While a ?Tablet computer other than iPad? also rated relatively highly, the only specific non-iPad to reach double-digit demand in either survey was the Kindle Fire.)

What tablets aren?t
Unlike smartphones, there is no inherent reason to buy a tablet. (Don?t kid yourself.) People must rationalize their $499 iPad purchase, and here's how they do it: "We just need something to use in the family room and kitchen," or "We just need something to take on trips," or "We just need an extra computer for the kids."

Most if not all tablet households already have a PC, so people don't need to use an iPad to set up their routers, archive their photos or whatever else a full-blown PC might be especially good for. What an iPad does is fulfill the needs of a secondary computer, without the hassle.

While tablets can replace PCs, they aren't PCs, and thank God for that.

Even in the business world, this PC replacement is gaining momentum. This past week, Barclays Bank made news by buying 8,500 iPads for use in branches, what is being called the biggest purchase of the tablets by a financial services firm.

"On the business side ??and on the consumer side ? it's about the apps,? says Paul Semenza, senior vice president of?analyst services for NPD?DisplaySearch, whose firm has identified that tablets are eating into PC sales. Enterprise-focused apps by the likes of Salesforce, Cisco and Oracle mean that an iPad can provide a convenient way to do highly specialized work quickly on a touchscreen, "rather than having to crack open the notebook."

In confirming the iPad as ?winner and still champ,? Consumer Reports? Jeffrey Fox also cites apps: "With dozens of Android-based models nipping at its heels, the iPad managed to not only hold its own, but up the ante for performance. When you add to that the breadth and quality of its apps, the iPad is still the tablet to beat."

Apple?s commanding lead in tablet-friendly apps ? over 275,000 built specifically for the iPad?s larger screens, versus the underwhelming handful?of tablet-specific apps?available in the?Google Play store ? helps keep it on top. A key reason for the App Store?s initial success is that Apple has its customers trained to spend money, something Google has never really been able to do. When developers release iPad apps, they expect to get paid by the download; to spend time and money bringing the same app to another platform, they must first calculate the risks and rewards.

This can be a vicious circle: If nobody's paying for Android tablet?apps, new ones won't be quick to show up, and then nobody will buy the tablets ... because of a lack of apps. Google has revamped its Google Play store, combining apps with movies and music, in?the hope that at least some customers would?start paying for some content.

Engage!
But there's more to it than just numbers: There?s increasing evidence that iOS users are far more engaged than Android users. NetMarketShare data reported in Fortune last June say that the share of mobile Internet usage for iOS had reached 62 percent, while the far greater population of Android devices hadn?t quite reached 20 percent.

A fresh study by IBM takes it further: Nearly 10 percent of all online shopping over Black Friday was done on iPads, beating "any other tablet or smartphone," says the tech firm. iPhones made up 8.7 percent, while Android was down at 5.5 percent. The so-called ?iPad Factor? is even more pronounced when compared to other tablets: It represented 88.3 percent of tablet online shopping, followed by the Barnes & Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent, says IBM's press release.

And that's why makers of Android tablets should be afraid, because when it comes to tablets, the desire for engagement must precede the tablet purchase.

Amazon and Barnes & Noble have had more luck than other non-Apple tablets in grabbing market share, at least in short bursts, because their tablets come with a built-in sales argument: Buy this to enjoy books and videos to your heart's content.

Amazon has the added advantage of customers who spend so frequently that they keep their credit cards on file, and enough revenues that it can sell tablets at cost, hoping to see profits through media sales.

But while the $70-per-year Amazon Prime video service is nice, its library is not as nice as the omnipresent Netflix's, and the service itself has a large base of customers who signed up for shipping perks, not streaming TV shows.

Most importantly, Amazon makes most of its digital products available on competing iPads, too. The customer's dilemma becomes: "Do I go cheap and get an Amazon-focused experience? Or do I spend more for a broader platform that includes Amazon's services and a lot more?" Apple may push its own services pretty hard, but the flowering of the App Store means that the iPad has become a crossroads of Internet experiences.

All of these factors mean that the iPad,?this expensive-ish not-quite-a-PC that was laughed at when it launched in 2010,?will hold onto its crown for the foreseeable future, as alternatives continue to scramble for relevance. In the smartphone world, someone shopping for an iPhone may well settle for a cheaper Android phone. Yet when it comes to tablets, someone who decides not to buy an iPad may simply choose nothing at all.

Mountain View, CA, November 26, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Working on its strategy to help enterprises embrace the consumerization of IT and Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) trend, Vaultize, an enterprise backup, sharing and mobility solution has launched its Android app. With this new version, an enterprise or business user will get anywhere and anytime access to the files backed up from her laptop/desktop or shared with her by other users (using Group Sync). At the same time, the enterprise IT team can also rest assured as they would be able to monitor and control which users get to use the app, just like they do with any other Vaultize feature.

?Consumer offerings like iCloud and Dropbox are posing significant data loss threats to businesses and enterprises. Today, important and sensitive corporate information is sitting in these clouds where the businesses and enterprises have no control. Since businesses look at Vaultize as a more secure and safer replacement for such soultions, it is our constant endeavour to provide solutions through our mobility apps that satisfy both business and end-user needs,? said Ankur Panchbudhe ? CTO and Co-founder of Vaultize.

Vaultize is the first backup solution in the world to do both encryption and de-duplication together at source. While all cloud-based backup solutions perform encryption at the server, Vaultize encrypts data at source before it leaves the device ? making it the most secure backup and sharing solution in the world. In addition to backup and sync between user devices, Vaultize?s Group Sync feature provides Dropbox-like file sharing and synchronization across users with enterprise-grade security, control and centralized administration.

Vaultize offers flexible deployment options. Customers can choose from Vaultize?s public cloud (hosted in Rackspace), virtual private cloud (hosted with any cloud provider of customer?s choice) or ?Cloud-in-a-box? appliance. Cloud-in-a-box is industry?s first purpose-built backup and sharing appliance with a combination of enterprise-grade hardware and Vaultize cloud software. The newly launched Android App works with all deployment options and is available free for download from Google Play store. Vaultize already provides similar app for iOS.

Recently Vaultize also announced support for Google Apps backup and became the first storage vendor in the world to provide a single platform to securely backup and share business critical data on endpoints as well as Google Apps.

2014 World Cup armadillo mascot named Fuleco

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:29 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) - Brazilians have voted to name the 2014 World Cup mascot Fuleco.

FIFA says more than 1.7 million people in Brazil took part in the vote to select the name for the armadillo. The other options were Zuzeco and Amijubi.

Fuleco comes from the Portuguese words "futebol" (football) and "ecologia" (ecology). FIFA says it "seamlessly represents the way in which the FIFA World Cup can combine the two to encourage people to behave in an environmentally friendly way."

Soccer's governing body said Sunday that Fuleco received 48 percent of the vote, while 31 percent went for Zuzeco and 21 percent for Amijubi.

New form of brain plasticity: How social isolation disrupts myelin production

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2012) ? Animals that are socially isolated for prolonged periods make less myelin in the region of the brain responsible for complex emotional and cognitive behavior, researchers at the University at Buffalo and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine report in Nature Neuroscience online.

The research sheds new light on brain plasticity, the brain's ability to adapt to environmental changes. It reveals that neurons aren't the only brain structures that undergo changes in response to an individual's environment and experience, according to one of the paper's lead authors, Karen Dietz, PhD, research scientist in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Dietz did the work while a postdoctoral researcher at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine; Jia Liu, PhD, a Mt. Sinai postdoctoral researcher, is the other lead author.

The paper notes that changes in the brain's white matter, or myelin, have been seen before in psychiatric disorders, and demyelinating disorders have also had an association with depression. Recently, myelin changes were also seen in very young animals or adolescents responding to environmental changes.

"This research reveals for the first time a role for myelin in adult psychiatric disorders," Dietz says. "It demonstrates that plasticity in the brain is not restricted to neurons, but actively occurs in glial cells, such as the oligodendrocytes, which produce myelin."

Myelin is the crucial fatty material that wraps the axons of neurons and allows them to signal effectively. Normal nerve function is lost in demyelinating disorders, such as MS and the rare, fatal, childhood disease, Krabbe's disease.

This paper reveals that the stress of social isolation disrupts the sequence in which the myelin-making cells, the oligodendrocytes, are formed.

In the experiment, adult mice, normally social animals, were isolated for eight weeks to induce a depressive-like state. They were then introduced to a "novel" mouse, one they hadn't seen before; while mice are normally highly motivated to be social, those who had been socially isolated did not show any interest in interacting with the new mouse, a model of social avoidance and withdrawal.

Brain tissue analysis of the socially isolated animals revealed significantly lower than normal levels of gene transcription for oligodendrocyte cells in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region responsible for emotional and cognitive behavior.

"This research provides the first explanation of the mechanism behind how this brain plasticity occurs," says Dietz, "showing how this change in the level of social interaction of the adult animal resulted in changes in oligodendrocytes."

The key change was that cellular nuclei in the prefrontal cortex contained less heterochromatin, a tightly packed form of DNA material, which is unavailable for gene expression.

"This process of DNA compaction is what signifies that the oligodendrocytes have matured, allowing them to produce normal amounts of myelin," says Dietz. "We have observed in socially isolated animals that there isn't as much compaction, and the oligodendrocytes look more immature. As adults age, normally, you would see more compaction, but when social isolation interferes, there's less compaction and therefore, less myelin being made."

She adds, however, that the research also showed that myelin production went back to normal after a period of social integration, suggesting that environmental intervention was sufficient to reverse the negative consequences of adult social isolation.

The new paper, together with a report published earlier this year by another group showing myelin changes triggered by social isolation early in life will broaden investigations into brain plasticity, says David Dietz, PhD, one of the paper's co-authors, an assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology at UB.

In addition, adds Karen Dietz, the work has implications for future questions regarding MS and other myelin disorders. "This research suggests that maybe recovery from an MS episode might be enhanced by social interaction," she says. "This opens another avenue of investigation of how mood and myelin disorders may interact with one another." Major funding for the research came from the National Institutes of Health.

(AP) ? Mark Wahlberg, roll out.

"Transformers" director Michael Bay says the 41-year-old actor will star in the franchise's fourth film.

Bay called Wahlberg the "perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers' legacy" in a post on his blog Thursday. He previously squashed rumors that Wahlberg was joining the film franchise about warring robots.

Bay worked with Wahlberg on his upcoming film, "Pain and Gain."

"Transformers 4" is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on June 27, 2014.

Bay has said the next film will take a new direction in the series. The first three movies starred Shia LaBeouf and featured Peter Cullen as the voice of Autobot general Optimus Prime.

The third "Transformers" film, "Dark of the Moon," was the second highest-grossing film of 2011.
