Time bomb: Military ordnance in Gulf of Mexico poses threat to shipping, says expert

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Millions of pounds of unexploded bombs and other military ordnance that were dumped decades ago in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the coasts of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, could now pose serious threats to shipping lanes and the 4,000 oil and gas rigs in the Gulf, warns two Texas A&M University oceanographers.

William Bryant and Neil Slowey, professors of oceanography who have more than 90 years of combined research experience in all of Earth's oceans, along with fellow researcher Mike Kemp of Washington, D.C., say millions of pounds of bombs are scattered over the Gulf of Mexico and also off the coasts of at least 16 states, from New Jersey to Hawaii.

Bryant says the discarded bombs are hardly a secret. "This has been well known for decades by many people in marine science and oceanography," he explains.

He will give a presentation in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 1 about the bombs to a group of oceanographers and marine scientists in a conference titled "International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions."

"This subject has been very well documented through the years," Bryant explains. "My first thought when I saw the news reports of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf two years ago were, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder if some of the bombs down there are to blame.'"

Military dumping of unused bombs into the Gulf and other sites started in 1946 and continued until 1970, when it was finally banned.

Millions of pounds -- no one, including the military, knows how many -- were sent to the ocean floor as numerous bases tried to lessen the amount of ordnance at their respective locations.

"The best guess is that at least 31 million pounds of bombs were dumped, but that could be a very conservative estimate," Bryant notes.

"And these were all kinds of bombs, from land mines to the standard military bombs, also several types of chemical weapons. Our military also dumped bombs offshore that they got from Nazi Germany right after World War II. No one seems to know where all of them are and what condition they are in today."

Photos show that some of the chemical weapons canisters, such as those that carried mustard gas, appear to be leaking materials and are damaged.

"Is there an environmental risk? We don't know, and that in itself is reason to worry," explains Bryant. "We just don't know much at all about these bombs, and it's been 40 to 60 years that they've been down there."

With the ship traffic needed to support the 4,000 energy rigs, not to mention commercial fishing, cruise lines and other activities, the Gulf can be a sort of marine interstate highway system of its own. There are an estimated 30,000 workers on the oil and gas rigs at any given moment.

The bombs are no stranger to Bryant and Slowey, who have come across them numerous times while conducting various research projects in the Gulf, and they have photographed many of them sitting on the Gulf floor like so many bowling pins, some in areas cleared for oil and gas platform installation.

"We surveyed some of them on trips to the Gulf within the past few years," he notes. "Ten are about 60 miles out and others are about 100 miles out. The next closest dump site to Texas is in Louisiana, not far from where the Mississippi River delta area is in the Gulf. Some shrimpers have recovered bombs and drums of mustard gas in their fishing nets."

Bombs used in the military in the 1940s through the 1970s ranged from 250- to 500- and even 1,000-pound explosives, some of them the size of file cabinets. The military has a term for such unused bombs: UXO, or unexploded ordnance.

"Record keeping of these dump sites seems to be sketchy and incomplete at best. Even the military people don't know where all of them are, and if they don't know, that means no one really knows," Bryant adds. He believes that some munitions were "short dumped," meaning they were discarded outside designated dumping areas.

The subject of the disposal of munitions at sea has been discussed at several offshore technology conferences in recent years, and it was a topic at an international conference several years ago in Poland, Bryant says.

"The bottom line is that these bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," Bryant says. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that's a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that's another big problem.

"There is a real need to research the locations of these bombs and to determine if any are leaking materials that could be harmful to marine life and humans," Bryant says.

Google can't enforce German Microsoft injunction: ruling

US-MICROSOFT-GOOGLE-RULING:Google can't enforce German Microsoft injunction: ruling

By Dan Levine

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday ruled that Google Inc's Motorola Mobility unit cannot enforce a patent injunction that it obtained against Microsoft Corp in Germany, diminishing Google's leverage in the ongoing smartphone patent wars.

The injunction would have barred Microsoft from "offering, marketing, using or importing or possessing" in Germany some products including the Xbox 360 and certain Windows software.

The ruling against the German injunction came from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Microsoft deputy general counsel David Howard said the company was pleased with the ruling. A representative for Google's Motorola unit declined to comment.

Brian Love, a professor at Santa Clara Law school in Silicon Valley, said the decision helps Microsoft counteract a favorable dynamic for Google in Germany.

"To some extent Germany has a reputation as place you can go and get an injunction relatively easy," Love said.

The current Xbox 360 is the market-leading console in the United States. Microsoft is expected to unveil its next generation Xbox video game console in 2013.

Microsoft has said that Motorola's patents are standard, essential parts of its software and that Motorola is asking far too much in royalties for their use. Google closed on its $12.5 billion Motorola Mobility acquisition this year.

Microsoft sued Motorola in the United States in 2010, and Motorola then filed a lawsuit in Germany. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced plans to move its European distribution center to the Netherlands from Germany ahead of a possible injunction.

After a court in Mannheim issued the sales ban, U.S. District Judge James Robart in Seattle granted Microsoft's request to put the German order on hold earlier this year. According to Robart, the ruling would remain in effect until he could determine whether Motorola could appropriately seek a sales ban based on its standard essential patents.

In its ruling on Friday, a three-judge 9th Circuit unanimously upheld Robart's order. Since Microsoft had already brought a lawsuit against Motorola for breach of contract in the United States, U.S. courts have the power to put the German injunction on hold, the 9th Circuit said.

"At bottom, this case is a private dispute under Washington state contract law between two U.S. corporations," the court ruled.

European regulators are investigating claims that Motorola over-charged Microsoft and Apple Inc for use of its patents in their products and thereby breached antitrust rules.

The case in the 9th Circuit is Microsoft Corporation vs. Motorola Inc, Motorola Mobility Inc and General Instrument Corporation, 12-35352.

Notre Dame Football: Power Ranking Toughest Opponents Remaining on Schedule

Notre Dame had a much-needed day off after two physical games against Michigan and Michigan State. Now, the Irish must look towards the remainder of the season.

After a pedestrian 8-5 season in 2011 and starting the year unranked in the preseason poll, few expected this type of start from the Golden Domers. However, the squad is now 4-0 and on the way to a BCS bowl and possibly more.

Still, it is important not to get ahead of ourselves. The Irish still have eight games remaining on one of the most difficult schedules in the country.

While every game will be a challenge, the last few contests will take some extra preparation as the team attempts to continue its great play.

?

8. Home vs. Wake Forest, Nov. 17

Wake Forest was expected to give Florida State a bit of a challenge early in the year. However, the game ended in a 52-0 defeat. The Demon Deacons could not even finish off Duke at home in their most recent game.

This team simply does not have the talent to stay with the Irish for four quarters.

?

7. Home vs. Pittsburgh, Nov. 3

Paul Chryst leads a very balanced team and the Panthers have the ability to play with some of the best schools in the country. They proved that with a win over Virginia Tech a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately, this is the same squad that lost at home to Youngstown State 31-17 to open the year. Until Pitt gets its consistency down, it will not be a challenge to Notre Dame.

?

6. Home vs. Miami, Oct. 6

The Hurricanes have gotten out to a good start to the season. They are 4-1 and have scored at least 38 points in all four wins.

Unfortunately, the team was exposed in the loss to Kansas State, Miami's only real challenge of the season.?

Notre Dame has one of the best defenses in the country and should be able to slow down Stephen Morris and company.

?

5. At Boston College, Nov. 10?

The fact that this is a road game makes this game a little tougher for the Irish. This battle is one of only four true road games for the team all year.

Boston College always plays Notre Dame tough, winning six straight games in the rivalry between 2001 and 2008. The team also has a strong passing attack that will be tough to defend.

The players better not sleepwalk through the "Holy War," or it will go down as a loss in the record book.

?

4. Home vs. Stanford, Oct. 13

Stanford showed how good it can be at home when it upset USC 21-14. However, it also showed how bad it can be on the road when it lost 17-13 to Washington in the very next game.

How Many Losses Will Notre Dame Have This Season?

How Many Losses Will Notre Dame Have This Season?

  • 0

  • 1

  • 2

  • 3

  • 4 or More

This is a very young team with an inexperienced quarterback in Josh Nunes, but it still has a lot of talent. The defense can slow down even the best teams in the country. The Irish should win with the home-field advantage, but it will not be easy.

?

3. Home vs. BYU, Oct. 20

BYU is no longer ranked after consecutive losses to Utah and Boise State, but the Cougars have one of the best defenses in the country.

Through five weeks, BYU has only allowed 10 points per game, good for fourth best in the nation.

This game should remind people of the Alabama-LSU matchups from last season and the winning side might not even reach double-digits. One mistake in this contest could cost either team the game.?

?

2. At Oklahoma, Oct. 27

Although the Sooners continued their recent trend of losing home games they should win, this is still one of the top teams in the country.

Few quarterbacks are better than Landry Jones, but the Irish need to jump on any mistake that he makes.

Notre Dame has already proved with the win over Michigan State that it is capable of winning tough games on the road, but it will need to repeat this feat in a tough environment in Norman.

?

1. At USC, Nov. 24

It is amazing how often this game has national implications. USC has already blown its perfect season with a loss at Stanford, but the Trojans can still play for a BCS title if it runs the table.

If Notre Dame remains undefeated to this point, it could be one of the best matchups of the year.

The Trojans have won nine of the last 10 matchups in this rivalry, but the Irish were the victors the last time the two played in Los Angeles.

This will be a great battle between offense and defense, and it should be a delight to watch regardless of which team comes out ahead.

Map locates Kismayo, Somalia

(AP) ? Al-Shabab rebels pulled out of a key port city in southern Somalia, the group said Saturday, a day after Kenyan troops invaded and marched toward the city center and seaside port that long served as the militants' key source of funding, officials said.

Residents in Kismayo said they woke to find police and government headquarters abandoned by the militants, sparking a looting spree of the government and police headquarters.

"They withdrew from here last night. The town is not under anyone's control now," Mohamed Hassan, a resident, said. "People feel some relief now. We hope no more fighting will take place."

The withdrawal came about 24 hours after Kenyan forces made a beach landing and as inland troops from Somalia and Kenya moved toward the port city from the west.

"Looting and chaos is going on here. Thugs are taking advantage of the vacuum," Maryan Hussein, another resident, said. "The abandoned houses are being ransacked and the streets are occupied by people carrying belongings."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, a spokesman for the Kenyan military, said five al-Shabab fighters were killed in a battle overnight. Two commanders were killed in the fighting, the military said.

He said the Kenyan forces are still verifying the reports that al-Shabab had pulled out of Kismayo. "For now we are treating it as a theory," he said.

The Kenyan troops landed by boats in the northern part of Kismayo on Friday and moved toward the port, he said. He said that al-Shabab lost "many, many militants, including some key commanders" during battles on Friday that involved helicopter gunships.

Al-Shabab used Twitter to announce the news it was leaving Kismayo.

"Last night, after more than 5 years the Islamic administration in Kismayo closed its office," the tweet said. "Kismayo shall be transformed from a peaceful city governed by Islamic Shari'ah into a battle-zone between Muslims" and invaders.

Al-Shabab found little popular support in Kismayo because of the conservative brand of Islam it tried to impose on residents. Al-Shabab carried out public executions, whippings and amputations as punishments, and enforced a conservative dress code.

Al-Shabab was forced out of Mogadishu in August 2011 and lost one of its major sources of funding when it could no longer tax businesses in the city's main market. Since then the taxes al-Shabab charged on goods coming into Kismayo's port were seen as its last major funding source.

As it no longer holds any major cities in Somalia, al-Shabab is expected to operate more as an insurgent force that carries out suicide and roadside bomb attacks.

Police: Minn. office shooter kills 4, then self

A man who apparently lost his job at a Minnesota sign-making business returned to the company and allegedly killed four people before fatally shooting himself.

The shooting took place at Accent Signage Systems in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood in Minneapolis at about 4:35 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement released this morning by the Minneapolis Police Department.

The suspected shooter has been identified as 36-year-old Andrew Engeldinger, a former employee who recently lost his job at Accent Signage Systems, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Police wearing body armor began searching Engeldinger's home early this morning.

The bodies of the four victims were found shortly after police arrived at the scene while evacuating other employees, according to the police statement. Police have not officially named the gunman or the victims. Minneapolis Police Deputy Chief Kristine Arneson would only confirm that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The company's owner, Reuven Rahamim, was killed in the shooting, according to the newspaper.

Four others who were hurt in the shooting were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Three of the victims are listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds. The fourth victim had minor injuries, according to police.

"We received three patients who came to the hospital and they are in critical condition and they continue to be in critical condition this evening. They are three adult males," Christine Hill, the hospital's Media Relations Specialist, told ABC News Thursday evening.

Director of Operations John Souter and production manager Eric Rivers were among the four that were taken to the hospital, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The other two victims in the hospital have not been identified.

Police originally reported that at least two people were killed Thursday afternoon, but later would only say that "several" bodies had been found inside the business.

Barbara Haynes was driving home from her teaching job when she got stuck in traffic near the scene.

"I've never seen that many police vehicles on the scene and SWAT teams, uniforms, the guns ... pretty heavy artillery," Haynes told ABC News.

Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building down the street having his high school senior pictures taken when he and his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.

"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off running to our vehicles."

Accent Signage Systems' website says the company makes interior signage and listed its founder as Rahamim.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said employees who were working when the shootings occurred were together and being cared for Thursday evening.

"We are deeply sorry about what has happened here," he said, calling the shootings "a horrible tragedy."

ABC News Radio and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Controversial painting, 'Isleworth Mona Lisa,' opens in Geneva

Geneva
-
Art experts report that a second Mona Lisa painting, found prior to World War I, is of the same woman with the enigmatic smile as the Louvre painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Its presentation will be in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sept. 27, 2012, Thursday.
After 30 years of highly-detailed research, the Zurich-based Mona Lisa Foundation is stating that the younger Mona Lisa painting is the original version of the well-known Louvre "Mona Lisa" painted by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance. It is considered the world's most famous painting.

"We have investigated this painting from every relevant angle and the accumulated information all points to it being an earlier version of the Giaconda in the Louvre," foundation member and art historian Stanley Feldman, told Reuters.

TodayEntertainment states that, "The Irish-born Feldman and his brother David, long involved in the art world, said historical evidence, critical comparison and scientific examination using the most modern techniques supported their view on what it really is."

Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" is known in Italy and France as "La Giaconda" or "La Joconde." It was named after the wife of early 16th century Italian nobleman Francesdo del Giacondo, Lisa Gheradini. However, the commission was never delivered to Giaconda. The Louvre "Mona Lisa" was in Leonardo's possession when he died in France, found later in the collection of King Francois I, who was known as a major Patron of the Arts.

It was during Francis' reign that the magnificent art collection of the French kings had begun, which can still be seen at the Louvre. King Francois I was known as a great patronizer of the great artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, who was persuaded to live his final years in France. Known for painting very little during those latter years, he did bring his most famous works with him which remained in France after his death except for the Isleworth Mona Lisa.

"The Isleworth Mona Lisa has been attributed to Leonardo, and is thought to be the unfinished portrait from which Raphael made his famous sketch (which is in the Louvre museum), and is in no sense a copy of the Louvre Mona Lisa," according to the Reuter article.

Hugh Blaker was known for finding the younger version of Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," also called the "Isleworth Mona Lisa."

image:126485:0::0

After a short excursion to Japan, the Isleworth Mona Lisa was placed in a Swiss vault for many years. It was discovered by collector Hugh Blaker in 1913, in an English manor owned by a Somerset nobleman, where it had mysteriously hung for over a century. His discovery led the world to recognize that Leonardo da Vinci had possibly done two Mona Lisa paintings. One was in the Louvre, and the other one went with Blaker to his studio in Isleworth, London, where it was named "the Isleworth Mona Lisa." When Hugh Blaker died in 1936, American collector Hunry Pulitzer, owner of the Pultitzer galleries in London and Bern, Switzerland, purchased the painting after selling his Kensington estate and all its contents. He would place the painting in a Swiss bank, then writing a book about it, titled "Where is the Mona Lisa?" which was published in 1966. The book was based on his case that the "Isleworth Mona Lisa" was the unfinished portrait of Lisa del Giocondo by Leonardo da Vinci, a fact that art experts refused to take seriously as Pulitzer was the owner of the painting. It passed to his Swiss business partner on his death in 1979; when she died in 2010, the painting was purchased by an international consortium --- who are its current owners. The Isleworth Mona Lisa

At the Geneva opening, a luxurious 300-page volume issued by the Mona Lisa Foundation. Vezzosi, director of the Leonardo museum in the artist's home town of Vinci in central Italy, calls on the critics to keep an open mind. TodayEntertainment writes,
"The book, 'Mona Lisa-Leonardo's Earlier Version,' will permit an unbiased judgement of the claim of this painting to be the earlier portrait, incomplete, of a young Mona Lisa, much younger than that of the Louvre," Vezzosi writes.
United States-based expert Carlo Pedretti and Alessandro Vezzosi, leading Italian Leonardo specialist and another foundation member, are both cautiously supporting the fact there are two versions of the "Mona Lisa." If so, the two "Mona Lisa" paintings would become a major sensation in the art world.

Venturi announces 300HP, ?300K America all-terrain EV, coming in 2014

Image

If you feel the need to rapidly hit the great outdoors without despoiling it, Venturi just may have your ride -- provided you have about $400,000 to spare. The company just launched the America EV at the Paris Auto Show, packing a 300HP powerplant, 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and projected 200 mile range to go along with the breathtaking price tag. Venturi's touting the car as more than just a smooth pavement flyer though, saying that it has a go-anywhere attitude with its high stance, generous clearance and tough carbon-fiber chassis. Still, if you want to go fast, the car can hit a top speed of 120 mph, and once you've burned off all the volts, can be fast charged in four hours, or ten from a 230V socket. Despite its off-road gumption, the rear-driver has considerable competition for sports EV dollars -- and a smooth road to its 2014 availability target is no given.

No Star Left Behind: Fruitless Search for Supernova Survivor Hints at Unexpected Origins

What fuels a white dwarf's luminous nuclear detonation?

A type Ia supernova is perhaps the ultimate combination of insult and injury?a star steals material from a companion star, reaches critical mass, becomes unstable, and then unleashes a nuclear blast powerful enough to decimate or destroy its already diminished victim.

The culprit in these cases is clear: type Ia supernovae arise from the cataclysmic explosions of small, dense stars known as white dwarfs. But the victim's identity is clouded, limiting the precision of cosmological distance estimates that rely on these luminous beacons as markers. Traditionally, scientists believed that with the victims were sunlike main-sequence stars or swollen giant stars. But recent studies have pointed to a major role for a lesser known mechanism?pairings of two white dwarfs in which one cannibalizes its orbital companion before exploding as a supernova.

Now a study in the September 27 issue of Nature bolsters the latter argument, concluding that only a small minority of type Ia supernovae stem from main-sequence or giant stars. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Supernovae driven by double white dwarfs, then, could be the rule rather than the exception.

Across the universe, type Ia supernovae are abundant, but few have occurred in the Milky Way in recorded human history. Supernova 1006, so named for the year A.D. in which it was first seen on Earth, was one such rare occurrence. But its origins remain unclear. So Jonay Gonz?lez Hern?ndez, of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and the University of La Laguna in Spain, and his colleagues looked for remains of the companion star from which the ill-fated white dwarf siphoned material before exploding.

Supernova 1006 exploded 7,100 light-years from Earth, so any surviving relic of the blast should lie at about that distance. But the researchers found only a small handful of stars near the supernova site, and all of them were swollen red-giant stars. "Giant stars are not predicted to be companion stars of progenitors of type Ia supernovae, since the impact of the violent explosion would remove all the envelope of the giant star," leaving only a smaller white dwarf?esque star behind, Gonz?lez Hern?ndez explains.

The lack of a surviving companion seems to rule out any large star as a partner, because the core of such a star should have weathered the blast and should remain visible today. So the companion could well have been another white dwarf, which would have left no trace. In conjunction with other, mostly fruitless searches for supernova survivors, the researchers estimate that fewer than 20 percent of type Ia supernovae originate from the classically assumed scenario of a white dwarf sucking matter away from a normal (non?white dwarf) companion star.

Not all researchers agree. Astronomer Andrew Howell of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network in Santa Barbara, Calif., notes that he and his colleagues recently found evidence for just such a "normal" companion for a type Ia supernova discovered in 2011 in a galaxy some 675 million light-years away. He calls the 20 percent claim in the new Nature paper "a vast overstatement," noting that a normal star somewhat smaller than the sun also would not leave any traces of itself and would fit the bill for the companion to supernova 1006. In Howell's view, though, the 20 percent figure might apply to red-giant progenitors specifically.

So the actual percentage of type Ia supernovae produced by various stellar combinations may remain in dispute. But if anything seems clear from the recent studies on the origins of type Ia supernovae, it is that these blasts are hardly homogeneous in terms of their progenitor stars. Howell says that such variety won't compromise the idea of dark energy, the mysterious entity driving the accelerating expansion of the universe, which was first identified in studies that used the glow of distant type Ia supernovae to trace cosmic distance. The evidence for dark energy, he says, depends on the relative brightnesses of supernovae "and being able to calibrate them using the colors of the supernovae and the shapes of their lightcurves." Unraveling the progenitors of these cosmic beacons?and, in turn, their intrinsic brightness?would, however, help researchers improve the precision of their cosmological measurements.

Alligator Baby Shower

This weekend, my friends and I hosted a baby shower for our friend Allison and her sweet baby boy on the way. We had it at our house and it was fun to have everyone here. And to have an excuse to get my house as clean as possible!

When Allison told us that she was using navy, green, madras, and alligators in the baby?s nursery, we decided to use that as inspiration for her baby shower.

We decided on a ?See You Later, My Little Alligator? theme.

We called on the talented girls at Sweet Birdie?s Nest to help us make the theme come to life. They created party circles, cupcake toppers, a banner, a welcome sign, and a great set of prints for us to frame for Allison. I love these colors and think they?re just so fun and happy!

This fun little set of prints (excuse the horrible glare) was framed on the welcome table. We also had fun little note cards with a number on them for months 1-12. The guests were asked to write advice and encouragement to Allison for each of those months.

Also on the welcome table, we had these delicious and oh-so-cute cookie favors from Holly at Doughmestic Housewife. Holly?s cookies are so soft and yummy and I?ll say it again?. they are little works of art! (Holly ships and takes custom orders!)

?

My friend Caroline brought delicious chicken salad sandwiches on croissants.

My friend Tina made pimento cheese sandwiches. Goodness, this is making me hungry!

Allison said she has been craving fruit, so I made my friend Emily?s pineapple pretzel salad recipe that I?ve posted before. Yummy!

My friend Allyson put together a pretty vegetable platter.

And of course no shower is complete without fluffy cupcakes from Publix and sweet cupcake toppers.

?

?

My friend Julie brought these delicious chocolate cookies.

I made these baked brie bites. I found the recipe on Pizzazzerie, and I will definitely be making these again.

My friend Caroline brought this wonderful spinach dip, and I think it looks so pretty!

?

?

The banner said ?See You Later My Lil Alligator.?

And all the hostesses with Allison. She allowed us to touch her belly? we did ask permission! Ha!

Me, Allyson, Julie, Allison, Tina, and Caroline

I love these girls!

Agriculture is the direct driver for worldwide deforestation

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A new synthesis on drivers of deforestation and forest degradation was published during the Bangkok climate change negotiations in September by researchers from Canada and from Wageningen University, Netherlands. The report stresses the importance of knowing what drives deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design and monitor effective REDD+ policies to halt it.

Agriculture is estimated to be the direct driver for around 80% of deforestation worldwide. In Latin America, commercial agriculture is the main direct driver, responsible for 2/3 of all cut forests, while in Africa and tropical Asia commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture both account for one third of deforestation. Mining, infrastructure and urban expansion are important but less prominent drivers worldwide. It is concluded that economic growth based on the export of primary commodities and an increasing demand for timber and agricultural products in a globalizing economy are critical indirect drivers.

Degradation of forest means a decrease in quality of forest, and is in over 70% of cases caused by (commercial) timber extraction and logging activities in Latin America and tropical and sub-tropical Asia. In Africa, fuel wood collection, charcoal production, and, to a lesser extent, livestock grazing in forests are the most important drivers of degradation.

The synthesis report 'Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation' sums up currently available knowledge from the literature on drivers, worldwide and by country, and gives recommendations to policymakers involved in the on-going international climate negotiations, as well as country-level plans and interventions. The viability of REDD+ depends on altering business-as-usual activity in sectors currently driving greenhouse gas emissions from forests, it is concluded. The report distinguishes between direct drivers, that directly cause deforestation and forest degradation, and indirect drivers, forces at the background such as changing market prices, population growth or policies and governance.

The report concludes it is important for forested tropical countries to regularly assess and monitor drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design effective REDD+ policies. The types of drivers have great influence on the forest carbon impacts and the choice of data sources and methods used to measure them. Also, understanding forest change patterns and underlying causes are important for developing forest reference (emission) levels, necessary for REDD+ implementation.

Countries largely define REDD+ strategies and interventions to deal with national and local scale drivers, but face problems addressing international drivers and acknowledge that international pressure will increase. The report offers solutions for how countries can decouple economic growth from deforestation, investigating the range of options countries have to address drivers at various scales.

The report, was supported by the UK and Norwegian governments, is available at http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/11/tackling-climate-change/international-climate-change/6316-drivers-deforestation-report.pdf

Fab Labs at the Library - Government Technology

There?s something unusual sitting in the parking lot of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Ind. Pay a visit to the 50-foot trailer and you might be surprised with what you find. Inside are various tools for cutting and shaping wooden objects, an electronics work bench, an injection molding machine and one of the most advanced gadgets for inventors, a 3-D printer.

Allen County is one of just a handful of public libraries that have set up multipurpose workshops for patrons who want to share and collaborate in order to create and build things. The terms used to describe these spaces include ?makerspaces,? ?fab labs? or ?hackerspaces.?

So why does the Allen County Public Library have a high-tech lab for would-be designers, engineers and inventors? ?The library is in the learning business, not just the book business,? said Director Jeff Krull. ?Anytime libraries come across an opportunity for people to learn and grow, they should do it.?

There are nearly 10,000 public libraries in the U.S., and patrons increasingly rely on them for access to technology. More than 90 percent of public libraries offer formal or informal technology training, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Library Association. Much of that training relates to instruction for computer skills, general software applications and Internet use.

Makerspaces and fab labs cater to a particular type of library patron: inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, crafters and youth groups. The technology used in these workshops can revolutionize the manufacturing process, allowing designs and creations that can be modified to suit individuals in ways not possible with mass production.

Terminology

Makerspace: A makerspace is a location where people with common interests ? often in computers, technology, science, digital or electronic art (but also in many other realms) ? can meet, socialize and collaborate. Makerspaces incorporate elements of machine shops, workshops or studios where hackers can come together to share resources and knowledge to build and make things.

Maker Meetups: A maker meetup is where groups of people with similar interests meet to work together, collaborate, create and share resources.

Contact Summit: The Contact Summit bills itself as a ?working festival of innovation where the Net?s leading minds and entrepreneurs can connect with the people who are building the social technologies of tomorrow.? Held in different cities, the event focuses on peer-to-peer solutions in technology, business, arts, education and government.

Fab lab: The term ?fab lab? traditionally refers to fabrication labs, which began as an outreach project from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology?s Center for Bits and Atoms. These fab labs share core capabilities, so that people and projects can be shared across them. In New York, the Fayetteville Free Library?s fab lab doesn?t emulate these fab labs exactly, preferring to call its lab a fabulous lab and leaving specific capabilities up to the needs of the community it serves.

Take the 3-D printer: It uses spools of coiled plastics ? the same materials used to make Lego blocks ? that are strong, nontoxic and available in many colors. The printer creates an object based on a digital design by melting the plastic and extruding it to form the shape of the object it is printing. The object may even have movable parts. Once expensive, these high-tech printers are now available for $2,000.

Allen County collaborated with TekVenture, an educational nonprofit specializing in makerspace technology, to create the lab. Working off a simple one-page agreement, TekVenture agreed to provide the trailer, along with the equipment and some free programming, and Allen County offered free parking.

The Fayetteville Free Library near Syracuse, N.Y., also has set up a special lab using similar technology services for its patrons; it is referred to as a ?fab lab.? Instead of housing it in a trailer, it?s the first public library to build and house the lab inside the library and is run by staff, along with volunteers. The equipment includes a 3-D printer, which was donated by a local computer business.

The Fayetteville lab and its open approach to learning grew out of a relationship the library has with the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, according to the library?s executive director, Sue Considine. She compared the pool of students at the School of Information Studies to a big incubator. ?The students help us to develop ideas and are forward thinking,? Considine said. ?This gives us a successful model ? a team that knows public libraries must evolve and develop new services.?

Unlike Allen County?s approach where there were no upfront costs, Fayetteville sought grant money to fund its lab. Starting with a $10,000 innovation grant it received in 2011 at the Contact Summit, a social technology event in New York City, the library also raised additional money through Indiegogo, a crowd funding website. ?Donors are coming from all over the world and not necessarily library folk,? said Considine. ?Individual pledges have been as high as $5,000.? The library also received a $20,000 New York state construction grant, which will be used to create a permanent space for the fab lab.

The two approaches involve different levels of staff support. Allen County?s setup required little to no library staff involvement. Volunteers from TekVenture conduct training programs and maintain the makerspace equipment. The open hours during which people can wander in have been very popular. Other offerings include Maker Meetups, which are geared toward the technologically savvy. Like-minded people who share in this collective approach, including communities of makers, inventors and do-it-yourselfers, all come together to support this unique makerspace.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of makerspaces, because they share their expertise and skills with novices. While Fayetteville utilizes some staff, it also has many volunteers, including a professor from Syracuse University who gave his time to put the MakerBot 3-D printer together. The library has engaged many volunteers to develop and run lab programs. ?There is no pressure on staff to become experts in this technology; we have a core group of experts to help out,? Considine said, adding that the library relies on peer-to-peer training to assist lab patrons.

Staff members, who are comfortable with the technology, participate in the Borrow-a-Bot program, where a librarian works with a patron for one hour to create an object. Fayetteville has open houses that attract up to 75 people. Community members can learn and do hands-on maker activities; the library provides lots of staff and outside help for these programs.

?Money is not an essential ingredient for a successful makerspace. People are far more important in this venture,? Considine said. ?People who identify with a space or project ? not money ? will help to sustain these spaces and projects.? She recommends working closely with staff members, explaining that they do not have to become experts in order to sustain the lab. ?Staff attitude matters more than staff expertise,? she said.

Library in Fayetteville, N.Y., use the fab lab?s 3-D printer.

Krull believes that the lab at the Allen County library has worked out well, but for libraries looking to bring members of the community into their physical space, the county?s approach may not be the best option. ?While the trailer is located right across the street from the library building, it is not drawing patrons inside,? Krull said. He thinks it would be advantageous to move the space into one of the library buildings. Currently, with the relatively small size of the trailer, makerspace programs must be limited to 12 users at a time.

Looking ahead, Considine would like to offer the Fayetteville fab lab to youth camps with a nominal fee for materials. On previous trips to the library, elementary-schoolchildren have shown interest in the possibility of making missing game and Lego pieces. She also plans to showcase the wide variety of patron creations.

Krull?s plans include extensive programming over the summer ? some free, some with a modest charge. He is also looking at bringing the space into a larger, permanent location.

Allen County and Fayetteville have created quite a buzz among librarians interested in offering nontraditional services that use cutting-edge technology.

Both Krull and Considine feel that creating access to emerging technologies is completely in line with the needs a public library serves.

Many libraries view these projects as test beds for other communities to embrace the future, according to Marcia Warner, past president of the Public Library Association, a division of the American Library Association. ?Libraries have always been about books, information and an educated citizenry,? she said. ?It seems like a natural progression to move into an area of facilitating information and material creation.?

The librarians offering access to the first makerspace and fab labs agree about their impact. ?By providing access and opportunity to experiences, libraries provide a pathway for transformation,? Considine said. ?Technology is not the death of the public library today. It will, however, change libraries as they rethink their space and role.?

Libraries, historically, retool continually, and the pace of evolution of the library promises only to move more quickly.

Pat Newcombe is the associate dean for library and information services at the Western New England University School of Law Library. Nicole Belbin is head of access services at Western New England University School of Law Library.

Iranian president's last hurrah in New York

DUBAI (Reuters) - He is loathed in the West and weakened at home, but Iran's outspoken president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seems intent on raising hackles one more time during his last official visit to the United Nations this week.

With tensions between Tehran and Western powers high due to the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, his latest blasts against Israel show that the hardline Ahmadinejad has no thoughts of presenting a kinder, gentler face to the world at a delicate moment.

But the 56-year-old - who is struggling through his last year in office after nearly losing his job - has long relished any opportunity to promote his controversial views and to bat back criticism of them.

"Now he's been sidelined at home he will really want to ham it up abroad," said Ali Ansari of Scotland's St Andrew's University, referring to Ahmadinejad's address to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday.

Unfazed by walkouts and demonstrations on previous visits to New York, Ahmadinejad has alleged the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 attacks, lambasted Western leaders for being played by "deceitful Zionists", and denied homosexuality exists in Iran.

In contrast to the rhetoric, he has happily engaged with U.S. media, appearing on television and in newspaper interviews.

"There's a lot of ego that drives the blacksmith's son from Iran to take on the might of American television," said Iranian-American author Hooman Majd, who has met him several times.

Since his election victory in 2005, the diminutive president has gone from obscurity to the most visible actor on the Iranian stage. He even survived a disputed re-election in 2009 that rocked the country to its core.

Mocked by progressive Iranians and blamed for severe mismanagement, Ahmadinejad has still created a cult following among some people through his charm, simple lifestyle and populist beliefs.

His fans glorify him as a humble servant who shuns the trappings of power. Ahmadinejad, so the story goes, took office refusing a salary and going to work with a packed lunch.

But such modesty does not extend to his fiery character which lies at the heart of his quest for global recognition.

"He's the first president in Iran that almost everyone in the world knows. That gives him huge satisfaction," Majd said.

Ansari said he was driven by vanity and the need for attention.

"He also believes he speaks the truth and that everyone in the West simply needs to be enlightened," he said.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's most powerful man, initially groomed Ahmadinejad to take on the reformist movement through his devout religious views, his common touch, his accessibility to young Iranians and connections to the military.

One of the attractions for his supporters was his non-clerical status and a down-to-earth image that contrasted with the elite members of the clergy.

Seven years on the political terrain has changed.

Reformists have been sidelined, opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi are under house arrest, and parliament is compliant, leaving Khamenei in control of all levers of power.

"Ahmadinejad's role was to dismantle the institutions of republicanism in the country, and having gone some way to achieving this, his utility is now over," Ansari said.

Despite his debt to Khamenei, Ahmadinejad's quest for power led him into confrontation with the supreme leader. The feud went public last year after Khamenei reinstated intelligence minister Heydar Moslehi, who Ahmadinejad had sacked.

Khamenei loyalists launched a campaign to undermine the president who has since been frozen out of major decision-making and threatened with impeachment.

"He wants to leaves a legacy where he was the guy breaking the stranglehold of the mullahs," Majd said. "He believes an elected president should be allowed to govern. That's quite a popular sentiment among Iranians."

IT'S THE ECONOMY

Economic problems have also piled up.

Ahmadinejad faces an economy ravaged by sanctions, a plummeting rial and inflation that officially stands at 25 percent but which some estimate is closer to 50 percent.

Many criticize him for launching a program in 2010 to withdraw generous subsidies in favor of cash handouts. Food and fuel prices have soared and households have struggled to cope.

Such was the concern over his performance that in March he was summoned by the parliament for a roasting.

Abroad the Ahmadinejad years have been equally disastrous, putting the country under huge pressure, analysts say.

Confrontation with Israel has intensified and Tehran is one of the few international backers of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad in the conflict there.

"Unfortunately during the Ahmadinejad era the foreign policy of Iran has been damaged, with the West but also with regional countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Gulf countries," said Hossein Mousavian, a former nuclear negotiator under President Mohammad Khatami and now a visiting scholar at Princeton University.

The next president needs the Supreme Leader's trust because legally Khamenei is the ultimate decision-maker on major foreign policy and security issues, Mousavian explained.

"It's been an incendiary, combative approach," Majd said. "There's a lot of dissatisfaction as to where the country is going."

Iran restarted uranium enrichment weeks after Ahmadinejad took office in 2005, activities that had been suspended under Khatami. Washington has hinted at military action over what it believes are attempts to develop a weapons capability.

As rhetoric flies back and forth between Israel and Iran, Ahmadinejad misses no opportunity to bash Israel as a "cancerous tumor" and the United States as the world's leading war-monger.

Yet his time in office is notable for his attempts to establish direct contact with two U.S. presidents.

"The most important legacy left during the Ahmadinejad presidency was that the taboo of negotiating with the United States was broken. Since he had a freer hand, he wrote letters to both President Bush and President Obama," Mousavian said.

"Even though his letters went unanswered, it was unprecedented for any Iranian president since the (1979) revolution to make such overtures to the United States."

The direct approaches include meetings between Ahmadinejad advisors and U.S. officials during his first term.

His determination to break the deadlock also led Ahmadinejad to advocate a 2009 nuclear deal that came close to resolving the issue. Ultimately it was shelved after criticism from both conservatives and reformists.

Having served two terms and unable to run again, he says he intends to return to his university post next year. But many believe he cannot resist the temptation to carve a future role in Iranian politics.

"He has a huge ego. He believes he's right and he is unafraid," said Majd, who believes Ahmadinejad may be mulling setting up a political party.

"He's like a boxer who's been knocked down. When you think it's over, he always seems to get up again."

Pop Art

1970's Advertisement for Coca-Cola in a can. Coca-Cola ad from the 1970s

Courtesy Coca-Cola.

As a child of the 1970s, I have a distinct and curious memory about the landscapes I inhabited: They glittered with glinting metal, not the gold of El Dorado but the effluvia of the consumer society. I am talking about aluminum can tabs.

If, as the saying goes, we are never more than three (or five, or 10) feet from a spider, so too did those little trinkets?a sturdy ring pull attached to a curled, wedge-shaped ?tear strip,? the disposable remnant of the mechanism then used to open cans of beer or soda?rarely seem out of range: Studding the dirt dugouts of Little League, clustered near the concrete parking stops at convenience stores, sunk between seat cushions in cars, draped as a necklace around your friend?s stoner older sister. When Matthew Broderick needed to hack the payphone in War Games, his tool was right at his feet. The sand at Normandy is said to be 4 percent war shrapnel. The beaches in Florida were easily that in soda shrapnel, a fact recorded by the frustrated reactions of stooped snowbirds sweeping metal detectors. ?I blew out my flip flop,? noted Jimmy Buffett, in the song that begat a lifestyle, ?and stepped on a pop top.? He was not alone: In 1976, the New York Times, commenting on beach injuries at Rockaway, noted that ?a large percentage were due to cuts inflicted by discarded pop tabs.?

There was an inherent problem in multipart portable consumer packaging: What to do with the sealing mechanism, once so vital and now so worthless (and dangerous), after you had opened the can? Often, it seemed, the answer was to simply chuck it. Another solution was to deposit the pulled tab in the can. While this may have been less environmentally injurious, it was not without its dangers. As an article in The Journal of the American Medical Association noted, at least seven children over a period of a little over three years had ?been treated for complications of ingestion or aspiration of pull tabs from aluminum beverage cans.? One particularly pernicious problem is that aluminum often does not show up on X-rays; hence the appearance, in journals like Pediatric Emergency Care, of such startling articles as: ?Swallowed Coke Can Tab: Is it Still Stuck in the Esophagus??

Indeed, it was at a radiology conference in 1974 that a physician named Lee Rogers?who had inadvertently swallowed a can tab during a basketball game?broached the idea of the can tab hazard to the medical community. And it was this single panel at a medical conference that helped launch a revolution in the design of our aluminum cans. As described in the American Journal of Roentgenology, Rogers? presentation triggered a media crusade, with more than 400 newspapers picking up the story. (Rogers, the AJR notes, also received negative feedback from the beverage industry, which was not keen on coming up for a costly replacement for an otherwise functional technology.) ?Aluminum pull-tabs are now common elements of our environment and inevitable offenders as foreign bodies in the esophagus,? the Journal of Pediatrics sternly noted in 1978, sounding like a Red Scare-era FBI dossier.

Can tabs were an ecological disgrace and a threat to children: Is there a more potent nexus for citizen outrage? The hunt for a new and better design was on. But the irony is that the pull-tab, unveiled just more than a decade before, had been hailed as a remarkable solution to an age-old problem. As its inventor, an Ohio toolmaker named Ermal Fraze, put it, ?I personally did not invent the easy-open can end. People have been working on that since 1800. What I did was develop a method of attaching a tab on the can top.?

Prior to Fraze?s invention, cans, both steel and aluminum, required a separate opener, the so-called ?church key.? As Henry Petroski notes in The Evolution of Useful Things, Fraze was at a family picnic in 1956, where he found ?plenty of beer but no church key,? and resorted to opening a brew via a car bumper. After an insomniac night and a spell at his workbench, Fraze had his concept. As Petroski describes, the actual engineering?getting a top that was easy enough to pull off but could withstand the force of the can?s pressure?was tricky: ?Some early pull tabs were being blown off prematurely ? so Fraze and other inventors came up with schemes to direct benignly the first whoosh of escaping gas away from the tab itself.?
